The woman saying Ukranians aren't patriotic and run away instead of defending their homeland couldn't appear more wrong to a western audience but then she goes on to voice possibly the most critical things that I have heard on the channel. She blames the government - "the fish rots from the head down" - and advocates real revolution as the only option to change it.

I think most people have their heart in the right place, but it's a matter of perspective how you see this conflict. Im not saying there is no right or wrong, im saying its very difficult to see and think around the corner. Ans putin has built many corners in the heads of the Russian population. I'm starting to doubt a lot of these quotes actually being from Mark Twain. Why do we need to quote someone when you can say something sound and logical? For patriotism, you don't need to support your government. But you do need to support your countrymen. Whether it is as a soldier, as a partisan, as a politician as an activist, or as a saboteur. You're not doing any of this for any government. You're not doing any of this for the soil you grew up on. But you're doing it for the people who you share it with.

I hate the war and I strongly oppose the current russian government, I am afraid of the police and I realise that the political, social and economical situation in Russia will be worsening in the nearest future. German DAF (German as a foreign language) teacher here. I've seen two full introductory courses worth of Ukrainians here (Volkshochschule Stuttgart), but only 5 males. One was around 18, probably below, and came with his mother, two were old and two were maybe in their thirties, though at least one of them has since gone back to Ukraine. I suspect he simply accompanied his wife to see she'd be okay and checked out the course, because he could. No, Ukrainian men aren't fleeing. Not their country, at least. Not in sizable numbers.

Ukrainian men do not run, because men of military age are not allowed out of the country, although there are many who want to leave, many leave for bribes to border guards and customs.

They cannot leave. After the third day of war, every man with Ukranian nationality capable of fighting and with less than 3 children is banned from leaving. The only way is bribing the border guards or illegal crossing.

@@piked261 David, it's a half-truth. There are indeed new regulation to prevent people, who are considered to be able to fight to leave the country. I'm in Poland right now and there is a very interesting development here. Till February 24th there were 1.5 Million Ukrainian residents here, mostly male, young and working as a result of work-related immigration in the 6 last years. Now Poland gave shelter to approx. 2.5 Millions of refugees, almost completely women, children and old people. The economy suffers heavily because the male Ukrainians returned to their homeland in order to defend it. No one forced them to. There was a mass exodus of males in the first weeks of the war. Explaining that Ukrainians fight because they can't leave seems to be a part of Russian originated defamation campaign trying to present Ukrainians as cowards or victims of the Nazi-clique which sends them to the front lines. They are not cowards, they are brave beyond understanding.

I live in the US and never met a Russian person till like the mid nineties, than suddenly I was working with, and living near many Russian people. The one surprising thing was every one of them was able to speak English. I never met one, who went back to Russia or met one who regretted coming to USA. One of my Russian neighbors, told me how she has constant phone calls with her family members who are still in Russia but they never discuss the Ukraine Russia conflict, because the family members back in Russia are too frightened, that the phone conversations are being monitored.

As a russian who left Russia years ago, I was so tired to have arguments with these people who say that everything is alright in Russia and that I would suffer abroad and other nonsense like that. I have freedom to buy any assets, move money in/out, zero capital gains tax. I use these freedoms which aren't available to residents of Russia to reach the wealth which is out of reach for vast majority of Russians. Besides, I have free internet, warm weather, sea, mountains and social life. "Thanks" to very restrictive Russian government (btw, supported by majority!), I have no plans to return to Russia in next 30 years. Neither I have any regrets. I see myself as sovereign individual, not as a serf of the state.

@Peter Pan That would be a big problem if that were true. Russia's military has a budget 1/12th that of the U.S., so paying more than double for personnel will be problematic. Realistically though, from what I saw, entry level in Russia is more like $1,200. Now, because of personnel shortfalls in Ukraine, Russia is offering contracts as high as $5k to try and entice people to join. It's still not $7k though.

Salaries are balanced by prices. You should consider not only salary , but what could you afford on it. Gasoline, electricity, gas , taxes are much lower here in Russia. Stop compare incomparable , it’s so stupid. 3000$ In New York Equals 70000 rubles in Moscow - it’s nothing There are no GOOD or BAD countries, all countries have positive and negative things that only citizens living there know. This is a very important moment in modern Russian history. Its no secret that Putin and his oligarchs have been robbing the people blind for decades but at some point (maybe soon) it will be too much for the people to ignore

I work in the US and have been engineering colleagues of former citizens of the USSR and several Soviet block countries, since the Iron Curtain fell. They were well trained in mathematics and sciences, and now are flourishing in the US. One family is Jewish, the rest are not. I can say this: if you have skills that are in demand (or can create our own business with the demand), then you will be successful here. But if you want to come and just relax, then I can say the level of capitalism and lack of social support (medical care, etc) is very harsh, and you will be quickly homeless and unhappy. And 1420 is correct: I never knew anyone from this side that wanted to go live in Russia. Yes, to go as a tourist and look around, but not even that anymore since putin's little adventure.

If you want to live and relax you can. You just have to work. College degree jobs are what you should aim for. And when your old have money left over or pension. Social security is only enough if you plan to live in an rv park. I hope America can keep its capitalism but add more safety nets and hopefully eventually universal Healthcare. Electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, auto mechanics, etc. can all attain very prosperous lives. They have been more affected because the soldiers are predominantly recruited from the minority republics, but they are also the staunchest supporters of the regime. The latter is a simple case of capital vs provincial attitudes, and in Russia (right now) it is stronger than any ethnic divide.

I usually don't like patriotism... pledging allegiance to a flag is something that is usually abused by the powers that be... similarly to the abuse of religion by clerics... however in this case the old woman might be right. If all those that want liberties go somewhere else instead of fighting for them in their own country who is going to be the driver of change? So maybe in that way patriotism can be something good.

Traveling is good; permanently relocating is not. You have an obligation to work to change your country for the better, instead of running away and leaving the task to others. Taking advantage of what others have built in their country because you don't want to fix yours is being a parasite.

Not some, but most! Most russians have permanent living conditions, affordable food, heat and water, there is always a way to make a good living. There is nor chance of being thrown on the street, 'cause you lost a job and temporarily can't pay bills, unless you are a lazy bum or an alcoholic.

Because Russian people don't need anything. Only food, electricity, and water. That is it. It is a true explanation of Russia. You know, how Russian people are celebrating? They go to "Macdonalds" ( the cafe doesn't exist anymore), or some really cheap place and just eat. Pizza, sushi-it is rich life for russian people. We eat such food only two times a year!!!! Russian people are happy, when they survive. When they have SOMETHING, they are really happy... Sad story.

1420, I have to say I admire your conviction and your determination to keep up with making these videos. They often don't show a good light on your country but sometimes there are glimmers that we can see. A couple decades from now when this is all history, I think you'll be able to look back and be proud of them.

My great-grandfather left Smolensk in 1920 since he saw no future in Russia. And I think there's the same attitude now. He used to lament that Belarus and Russia would always be countries you needed to leave to have a better future for you and your family.

It's nothing like that today. Russia has half the poverty of the US and their economy is based on resources and industry whereas the US is built on service . Russia is proper country , the US is a house of cards and it's about to collapse.

It's normal for people to immigrate in chance for better life especially when your country is waging a war for no reason and the whole civilized world is breaking any trade or connections with them. For Russia there are only two cities - Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The rest is practically none-existing. The opportunity to make business in russia still very good, and same qol of life will cost much lower. So we dont need 10k/month to buy everything that we need. Like im actually spending like 120$ taxes and 300-400$ for food in month, and earn much more than this.

Life is hard everywhere, and the difficulty is only relative to each individual's personal situation. You make the best out of the life that you've been dealt.

I really enjoy the subtleties in the editing like the sneeze and the 1420 shaking to it. I can appreciate things like this.

Man I travelled the world too so I can tell how delusional and/or manipulated some of those interviewed are. As a matter of fact I had to burst out laughing a few times at some rediculous claims.:)

It depends, I guess. If you take into account just the gross salary, then yes, the number would be way too different. However, if you take into account the total cost of living like rent, healthcare, taxes, insurance, groceries, ordering food, education, other services, etc. then I would not be surprised if the difference is not actually as huge as we are used to thinking. But this obviously applies to Moscow mostly, not Russia as a whole, and, probably, only in some cases. My guess is that lady is talking about one particular instance in her own family experience and just uses this confusing generalization.

As German i can tell u about Patriotism. I was blessed to talk with my grandfather and his elder Brother about Patriotism. Too much of them is the same Poison like Religion. The highest Price always pay the ordinary people. The Brother of my Grandfather was born 1898 he was fighting 2 years in WW1 in France. My grandfather was defending Omaha Beach against the Allies. My Dad was 15 as they taked him to fight against the British in Danmark. Many more stories i could tell. Patriotism is ok for Worldcups .

Don't remind people there is proof NATO coming closer to Russia' s borders was never a threat. The proof being a piece of Russia sitting in the middle of NATO for decades and no Russian leader ever fearing it could be attacked. It is called Kaliningrad.

It's funny to see that in Russia the US is still seen as one of the best countries ( or even the best) in the world. Like they would have the highest earning jobs, the most freedom etc... While in Western Europe the US is often laughed at because of how awful some things are compared to Western Europe (like healthcare, abortion, school systems, gun laws...). Most people here in Belgium wouldn't even consider moving to US.

@Tharran - Same as the UK. It's OK to visit the US (with PLENTY of travel/medical insurance cover) for a holiday, but I wouldn't want to move there... The majority of countries in Western Europe have excellent living standards, good health care, rarely a mass shooting, good law & order, with democracy. Also, as far as I'm aware (?) none have a 'beady-eyed', ex-KGB 'mini-dictator' causing the death of hundreds of thousands and devastating a neighbouring country - Just saying !

But to be fair, Americans on average have very little experience with other countries, most of them rarely leave America (can't blame them, most have no reason whatsoever to ever leave), but in Europe we see and hear a lot about America. So (again, on average) a Belgian might be better at comparing USA to Belgium than the other way around. And then there's the language barrier stuff as well, but that's not really the point.

@@stewedfishproductions7959 Though there are problems here, super amplified by the media, it is better here. I lived for years in several European countries including Germany, and visited most. On my return to the US I knelt down kissed the earth. There is just something lacking over there, I'm not sure what but when I got home I could breathe again. It's not the people as most everywhere the citizens and neighbors were very nice, might be the lack of space since everything seems so close in.

Russia Tourism Board just adopted a new motto: "Russia.... we have electricity and water. Period."

It's just that Russian military sucks because of general corruption in the country and lack of maintenance. Most Russian soldiers don't want to fight in Ukraine and others are lacking morale, they don't know what are they fighting for. So it's really not a big deal to hold against such army. Also the whole Russian army structure needs critical reforms, because right now it cannot be called a 21st century army. The whole might of Russian army was only on TV.

I would not say that Russia is much larger than Ukraine. Russia loses the advantage by entering the territory of Ukraine because of the possibility of quick mobilization of the civilian population. And so the armies of Russia and Ukraine are approximately equal in number. The only difference is that Russia can mobilize more from civilian

To the lady speaking about patriotism. We have a lot of patriotism here in the states as well but there's a thin line between patriotism and nationalism and we have plenty of that also but the difference being one is cheering on your country in the Olympics and the other is invading a sovereign nation and thinking that no matter how many innocent people die its justified because your country can do no wrong. It's a slippery slope. It's OK to be patriotic but you need to keep nationalistic thoughts in check.

My wife is Russian. She left Russia 18 years ago, as she had a daughter and there was no hope of a decent life in Russia. She now earns $150,000 a year, has a good job, owns her own car, and owns a house worth $750,000, and she is FREE. In Russia, her friends still wallow in poverty, as Putin keeps the population under his jack boot. She will tell you that her decision to leave Russia was the best decision she has ever made.

$150K in the US is not an insane amount of money especially if you live in states like California or New York. In NYC average yearly rent is $30,000 and we’re not talking about any kind of luxury, just basic housing. Add other basic living expenses plus kid’s school tuition and $150 K isn’t really all that much but only affords you a decent life for you and your family

@@aramisbelgium In the most metropolitan cities in the USA and/ or if you have a great job in a great industry, possibly in management, 150k$ is not that rare in the USA. There is also the Purchase Power Parity to take into account... In any case, overall, most people have a WAY better life and/ or economic conditions than in Russia.

Fully agree. The country today that most resembles Fascist Nazi Germany is Vladolf's Russia. Russia is led by a dictator, there is no free press, no freedom of expression, no freedom of assembly, no unfiltered access to the internet, & the population is brainwashed by state propaganda. They have invaded their sovereign neighbors & annexed territory on the pretext of "protecting ethnic Russians" -- echoes of Hitler's annexation of the Sudetenland. They have levelled cities, indiscriminately bombed & shelled civilian targets, committed war crimes & then flatly denied them with impunity.

@@bjornh4664 Yeah I get all that, but by doing this you keep feeding this Russia vs US stigma/rivalry. By doing this he also frames the question in a particular way as we all know Russia and the US have a certain history, whereas it would be more neutral to talk why people flee in general.

I really enjoy your interviews. Seems to be a mix bag of opinions. In rural areas people seem to be more content and satisfied with their lives. In Urban areas it appears lots of young people are hoping for a better future. But older ones are more content. Probably similar in a lot of countries.

“Freedom is being strangled here”, It couldn’t be said any better.

I had a Russian girlfriend who insisted on sleeping without air conditioning on 80 degree F summer nights because she never had it in Russia and it’s “not natural.” So she had to sleep nice and “natural” on the couch because there’s no way I was turning that shit off in the bedroom. 🤗

I knew a Russian nurse who run with her family from Russia to Prague just after Gorbachev time. They were working in Russia, in the hospital, but no salary . For long months. They fell in Prague like living in heaven.They supported their mother in Russia. She did not get her pension for 2 years. She had to burn all her furniture in the winter - not to freeze. And other old lady, in a little rural house… She said she is very lucky. Each winter she has enough cabbage and old dry bread from the summer, so she is not starving. She was really very happy about it. Putin came and helped them out of this mess. The state slowly started working again . I know old people LOVE HIM!!! It looks that young people do to.

To the lady's point of Jews being first allowed to leave, that is exactly true. My boyfriend was in the group in 1989. He didn't leave because he couldn't adapt as that lady says. He and his whole family left because why would any smart person continue to live in Russia? Especially as a Jewish where you were constantly 'shit' on? And Russias not racist.....that's just 1 example. Believe me, they hate blacks, jews, Asians. Don't let Putin fool ya with all his Ukraine is racist and we are not and must help those people pppfftt. Russia is HUGELY racist!1 And yes, I know America is racist too. We have idiots here, but we KNOW we have racist problems and admit to them. But on a whole, US is a far more tolerant country

trust me, its the same people i met in russia whos happy and grateful to the government for the fact that they have to survive on their extremely small salary, work 24/7, never being able to afford vacations abroad and so on. old veterans or just hundreds of thousands elderly people here live in a worse conditions than homeless in some canada.. and u can see them everyday going to supermarket, counting their last penny to buy a loaf of bread. those are the exact moments when u realize u dont want such government in ur life.. the one that will never care bout its own nation. was really glad to hear rational explanation from the open-minded part of older generation

What 's the lie , I haven 't seen one who couldn 't buy bread here . If you are working or retired , you have no problems , so it is everywhere . For example, I receive a pension of $ 165 per month and do not experience any problems in anything , because we need to look not at the salary level , but at purchasing power parity.

Bread is incredibly cheap in Russian, judging from the prices I've seen on Niki Proshin's channel, Inside Russia, Russia Plus. They do seem to be having a problem now with potato quality (not quantity or price).
