    1) When determining the turn order, volunteer to go "last," so you can place both you starting settlements in a row. (they may not allow this, but definitely remember to ask. It's a huge advantage.) 2) Place your settlements in high-value locations. It's well-known that numbers closer to 7 are better because they're more common, but what isn't known is how valuable grain and ore are right at the start of the game. Try to place your settlements in locations that guarantee you'll be able to upgrade them to cities before long. (you ignore wood and clay because everybody else will be scrambling for them and ignoring the wheat and ore. In the event that everybody is scrambling for wheat and ore and ignoring the wood and clay, go for that instead.) 3) Never let players know what you have unnecessarily. Granted, they can just keep track if they like, since every card gain is public knowledge, but there's no reason to inform them if they haven't been. When asked if you have a resource, do not say "Yes, but I will not trade it," or "No, I don't have any." Instead, say something like "What are you willing to trade for it?" When you hear their offer, say "No deal," unless of course you're willing and able to accept it. 4) Do not make enemies. Certain players will be petty, and they may refuse to trade with you out of spite if they don't like your behavior. 5) Keep a low profile and make yourself seem weak. If you have few victory points or few cards, let people know. If you have many, don't draw attention to this fact. 6) If nobody is paying any mind to the Longest Road or Largest Army, you can pull a surprise victory by grabbing those with your last points. Longest Road is easier to grab with a sneak attack then Largest Army, if you can manage to connect two roads together over the course of the game. Largest Army requires you to already have one or more knights, making it harder to hide your intentions. 7) Keep your hand size low. Losing resources to the Bandit can prove disastrous, and the wheat/ore strategy makes you more vulnerable to its attacks. Don't be afraid to trade 4:1 if you lack a port, even if doing so does not gain you the resources necessary to build anything. It's better then throwing them away. That's all there is for strategy. The rest is vigilance and experience. Practice the game, learn what to watch for, pay attention to your opponents and try to figure out if they're planning to build someplace you want to be. And remember, at the end of the day, it's a game that involves dice. Unless you roll loaded ones, you'll lose every so often. Unless you define "winning" by having fun. Then, you can win every time with the right attitude. : )

The term Dutch disease was coined by The Economist magazine in 1977 when the publication analyzed a crisis that occurred in The Netherlands after the discovery of vast natural gas deposits in the North Sea in 1959. The newfound wealth and massive exports of oil caused the value of the Dutch guilder to rise sharply, making Dutch exports of all non-oil products less competitive on the world market. Unemployment rose from 1.1% to 5.1%, and capital investment in the country dropped. Dutch disease became widely used in economic circles as a shorthand way of describing the paradoxical situation in which seemingly good news, such as the discovery of large oil reserves, negatively impacts a country's broader economy.
