why do we suffer? and is there a way out? Buddhism and Katha Upanishad

why do we need philosophy?
To answer the question in one line, because we suffer.Buddhism is based on four noble truths:
1. Suffering is an innate characteristic of existence in the realm of samsara or in the world of time, space and causality.
2. The origin of this suffering is our desires.
3. There is freedom from suffering. It can be attained by the renouncement or letting go of our desires.
We will not look at the fourth noble truth. Instead we will look at a verse from the katha upanishad.
With the help of these noble truths and the verse, we will try to understand why we suffer and ask the question if there is a way out?

I don't think you should never touch the "pleasant". I guess it depends how you view certain objects. For instance, mdma, is that "good" or "pleasant"? I live my life trying to build up my "good" column, and occasionally dipping in to the "pleasant" because, well, life would be quite dull otherwise. For me it's about finding that balance. If, once or twice a year, I can enjoy a quiet evening inside with my closest friends on a small amount of mdma, is that bad? The bonding and love we share is surely beneficial for us, and therefore for society and so on and so on. Forgive my Class A drug example.

hey, i think things in themselves are neither good or pleasant. for example a blade can kill as well as save people (surgery), or just be used as a tool to cut vegetables. certainly, life can get dull without pleasure, there is no denying that. good does not mean unpleasant. good can be pleasant. the 'pleasant' in this video defines something that we use, over and over, as a tool to escape some hard facts of our lives. as for your specific example, a good way to introspect on this, is to think on, what sort of relationship you have with your friends, when you subtract mdma from the equation. then proceed to find out if the occasional mdma is good or just a mindless pleasure in your life, as well as in your relationship with your friends. i can't comment on the medical aspect of mdma though. again take this as a general guideline. only you have the ability to answer the question my friend. i don't mind the example at all.

@@justlookatit4593 Oh I'd only use it as a way to ocassionally dip in and enhance the friendship. There's no denying the boundaries you can cross with drugs that sometimes just isn't capable sober. Going to a different headspace together is special. But definitely done sparingly. It's not a necessity, more a luxury.
Great vid
