Why Do We Procrastinate?
You know that thing you've been putting off for awhile, that could probably be done now but instead not doing 'cause it doesn't sound like fun' right now? Well here's an explanation as to why you probably feel that way.
So stop procrastinating and get back to work!

As a chronic procrastinater, and a sufferer of depression, I can tell you that you can procrastinate due to fear to the point that you completely break down, and require professional help before you go back to school/work. And I still suffer from both, even though I'm now retired. The professional advice that I got from cognitive behavioral therapy was to do something - anything! - and you will feel better. and when you feel even a little bit better, you can go on to another task, the completion of which will make you feel a bit better, and so on. Every completed task makes getting to the next one just a bit easier.

"Know what you're gonna do with your life before you're 18!" got real.
For most of my life I struggled with extreme suicidal ideation, along with depression, anxiety, panic disorder, and ADHD. Because of this, I assumed I wouldn’t live past 18. And with that idea in mind, I couldn’t care less because “Oh who cares I’ll be dead soon anyway.” I’m still am struggling with these procrastination and other mental health problems but they’re getting better.

My story is nearly identical to yours. This society is not designed to help people like you and I. It's incredibly unforgiving. Sometimes I think it was profoundly selfish for my parents to have me. Why would anyone with psyxh problems want to pass them on to offspring? I certainly won't be doing that. I don't see a way out of my situation yet. This world likes to trap us into long term career and life trajectiries that can become very punishing as you are.

Connor Bosley Write down shiny to do later. Now you can do the urgent and important things now and shiny will not be forgotten but saved till later as a reward for doing what really needs to be done now. That said, the distraction caused by seeing shiny is often caused by an overabundance of a certain neurotransmitter on the brain. It prevents you from focusing on the now by switching your attention constantly. It is not a psychological problem but a medical one called HAD. Hyperactivity Attention Disorder and can be treated with drugs. Please see a doctor.

Chronic procrastination is often correlated with depression. This is a long rant about how much procrastination sucks, it's not really light hearted with jokes about procrastination. But I wanted people who are here who have an issue beyond the joke to know you are not alone and to maybe explain how serious it can actually be. Also, procrastination just fucking sucks. There is no use for it, everyone thinks you are undisciplined, lazy, useless etc. I've often met people who are procrastinators who have been abused, who often have a incentive to avoid negative feelings. It's less about realizing that it will go away, procrastinators know it will not go away. They are scared of failing or succeeding. 1.) You write a difficult paper. It was the best you've done, you worked so hard and yet only got a C-. For once you didn't procrastinate. The day it was assigned, you studied, researched and did you absolute best. That C- means you don't pass, likely due to procrastinating in the past. You feel everything was for naught and wish you hadn't wasted time trying and stressing. --- Fear of failure 2.) Same as above, but this time, you got a B, allowing you to pass and actually do pretty well, as well as boosting your self confidence. But you remember how incredibly difficult it was to do that paper at all, and now you must keep up that level or go higher to stay where you are or to even improve and if you can't, you will drop down to where you were, despite the work you put in. If you fail, you're either back to square one, or took two steps back, because then people saw that you can do it, and this time you didn't --- Fear of success. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't if you fear both scenarios. I wish there was some serious in-depth study on this to FIX it. Because this shit ruins peoples lives. Some are on the street because of depression mixed with chronic procrastination. A fear to try because you may fail, and/or a fear to try because you'll succeed and may fail in the future. There are countless instances when people have ruined their lives because of procrastination. lost relationships, jobs, even things they want to do. This isn't some pass off of people not having will power (which clearly if the functions in the brain are not doing what they should, the person has no control anyway. If it's genetic or having to do with brain function, neither are in your control.) The ONLY thing I've found to help if you procrastinate at all, or have chronic procrastination is not the usual BS of make a plan (that rarely works for people with procrastination that damages their life quality) is to do ANY little thing you can. Need to get some food? Do it now. Need to grab a blanket? Do it now. Really small things people think is easy, but for many with this basically brain malfunction, it's hard to retrain the mind to function semi-normally. After you get used to a habit of just doing things when needed (only small insignificant stuff) it can help. Also, encouragement from others does too. And fuck anyone who tells you something is not progress. Celebrate the little stuff, no matter who you are or what your issues maybe. Progress is still progress, even if after you take a step or two back, you still went forward, you CAN do it again. Oh and easier said than done. My biggest bane in life is keeping up with any habitual pattern. All I can really say, is good luck and find people who are happy for you moving forward, no matter how small a step it maybe and remember to push yourself in turn to get better.

+MaggoTDiluteD That's so incredibly rude of them. It's not their call to judge what progress and success are because they are not you and neither of those are linear nor universal. Anything you do, that pushes you forward to a better you or just making things better is a success in my book. And not to get too sappy, but everyone would be better off if we just acknowledged that people trying at all, even when they fail, is amazing. And failure is actually not terrible. We all fail. Learn from it, not put others or yourself down, ya know? And even if you don't get the lesson the first time, that's also part of the process. We spend so much time putting others and ourselves down and it doesn't help. In fact, it makes things worse. Good for you for cutting them out of your life. Even if they meant well like most do, it still was not okay to say that. Anyway, I'll stop ranting. I'm just glad to hear people can relate to all this.

Procrastination is also a sign of deep sadness that has not healed yet. In other words, sadness or grief can hold back someone from doing things she/he needs.

Exactly the same here.. I don't want to think about it because of the stress, what brings even more stress in the end.. It's a circle, that only stops after failing that exam, what brings a lot of relief, even though I feel bad about it for a time, that I didn't learn enough to do it.

+h3h3Productions I was mainly referring to the fact that Michael Aranda referenced three different sub-fields instead of accepting one as the best. SciShow is recognizing that it's a complex study, and they're being very honest in their communication of that fact by describing what we know in this way. Submission to authority (of a particular field) would be an easy mistake here.
my problem is that i procrastinate when the deadline is coming. I dislike deadlines. When i have a deadline, i feel pressured to do that job, and that pressure gives rise to stress, and stress gives rise to procrastination. This happens till the stress builds up so much that i am forced to do the work (which is at a time 1 hour before deadline usually). When i don't have deadline, i don't show procrastination or show it much less frequently.
@pushkarbhargiri498

The opposite happens to me. When I have a deadline I think "Shoot I need to finish these papers." If there is no deadline I will procrastinate until I give up.

Nobody likes deadlines, but you have to do it, and if you start earlier. The better the outcome is. Building things for example, you always find unexpected problems along the way.

06:36 That Stanford study is really interesting. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the video, just watching this helps me already. I feel less alone with my procrastination problems, knowing that there are other people who deal with the same problems. In my time at uni it often got pretty serious, I often put exam preprarations off until the very last days, sometimes even only 1-2 days before the exam, so I had to study the whole semester within that time, which is actually crazy now that I think about it again xD So unite my fellow procrastinators, let's defeat our inner demons and get to work! Best of luck to all of us! :)

+Kalen Wilson That's not a cave-woman, but an avatar of a goddess manifesting herself as a combination of Sophia Myles and Amanda Seyfried to teach men about the power of boobs and femininity. Look how the men to her right are exalted in her presence, while the child to her left is unmoved, blasé like "Yeah she's pretty I guess? I just don't see what the fuss is all about." And the other men telling him "wait till you hit puberty".

Lucas G. It's a buddhist saying. I think it also implies that, by the time you step into the river the second time, you're not the same person anymore either. Everything is always changing.
The first part makes sense to me. I'm somewhat impulsive, procrastinate a ton, and am terrible at planning very far ahead in the future.

+Micah Philson I, on the other hand, am a terrible procrastinator, but am pretty good at stopping myself from doing things I shouldn't. (even for really reptile-brain desires like "I want to eat that, and a lot of it")
I found this very helpful, thank you. I push projects off way too much.
Thank you for making this. This is actually quite handy. Helps me understand myself, just that little bit better. I never thought the way I perceived my future self and procrastination would be connected. I do see them as a stranger. I always thought it was just a poetic way of thinking of it, though now it seems my thought patterns have unforeseen consequences... That's interesting. Very interesting. I'll try to associate myself more with my own future. Perhaps that will help...
