That Dexter solo on Lady Bird is my favorite of all time. I've learned to embrace the process required to get better more than anything. Playing a satisfying solo is just a by-product. And I use the term "satisfying" loosely because I'm never satisfied. But the continual tweaking of the practice process and structure is my priority. And maybe we play jazz in 2023 so we WON'T be the last ones to do so. Thanks for the great discussion!

re: Brecker. I remember seeing him play in 1997. I was talking to him after the show and he mentioned not being happy with a part on "Delta City Blues" and one other song where he didn't play what he wanted. I was astounded. All I heard as a listener was an amazing show from one of greatest sax players ever. I had a similar experience working on a project with Peter Erskine where he didn't like the way he played a groove (it was a great groove BTW)...it's all about that goal of being able to do what you want, when and how you want and achieving the level of art you feel. I think very few of the greats ever achieve it and they live with this feeling of not quite being there.

Of course I had to listen to the Gordon solo before finishing this. There’s no way a person can remember all the little notes and with the right energy, movement and inflection, unless they are playing straight from their soul.

Another answers is the late stages of coltrane- Recording like inter- stellar space, Welcome . Spirituality = the human experience for betterment of choosing ( right from wrong)

Why ? To fulfill our soul with happiness, completeness .. That is our value. Even though we still play for $50 a jazz gig...but i wont do it gor any other music

Agreed on all spiritual points. I have a question as to how you feel this relates to the audience. As players we’re inspired by the greats, without them some of us probably wouldn’t continue this journey and by hearing them it gives us direction and shows what is possible. As far as your own personal playing, is it important for you to have an audience? Is it important for you that others hear your music?

Yes, but it’s a source of pain and frustration for me. I can’t really control the outcome of having audience beyond actively putting out music and hoping someone receives it. I can control my personal use of energy for self-expansion and betterment.
