I was originally taught by a classical saxophonist who told me to play very close to the tip to develop control. However, at this point, I think I take significantly more mouthpiece at different times.

Are you changing the resonant length of the reed with your lower jaw? Or, is that just "guitar faces" for sax players? I have one, but, I haven't started messing with it, yet.
