    NO! I can only justify one or two bags as a treat. Used them and abused them and they only treat yourself to one or two the next time around, but to collect these grocery bags made of leather and slap on a monogram and pay thousands is insanely crazy.

    Spending thousands of euros on a bag that's mass produced and so well known that counterfeits are practically as good as the original seems to me as the height of stupidity. Local brands, local artists, good quality, fair price and no logos. That's what I buy.

    It’s very important to have core values to guide your decision making. For me, I don’t like being wasteful and being reasonably frugal is important to me. Also modesty and not showing off is a good trait to have. Anything with a big logo is a no for me. I’ll spend more if I see the value and it is built to last but I won’t buy junk I don’t need and I won’t pay for a fashion brand name like gucci or Louis Vuitton.

Until, in the course of an informal chat, she let it slip that she "needed" the extra money to pay for a luxury Hermès hand bag. Overworking herself out, spending less time home with her family, to pay for a handbag??!! That's so ridiculous and void, I never looked at her the same way afterwards.

    Having never had the means to spend thousands on bags, I have instead become a collector of vintage bags where the price point I set at under 300 pounds or about 400 dollars each and have an enormous amount of fun hunting up new-to-me items. This way, I think, you get closer to the real value of the item rather than hyper-inflated prices based on name and/or fashionability. Beauty and fine craftsmanship come at many price-points and truly well-made items are a joy to own and use.

    Marketing is a powerful tool that has convinced consumers that what we buy is indicative of our self worth. The more luxury you own, the more inheriently valuable you are. I find there are some who have a genuine love for luxury brand designs, but most are buying into a lifestyle and image that has been upheld as superior to any other. You're buying to be apart of a brand and what it represents in our society.

    Tanner Leatherstein's perspectives garner my utmost respect. However, when he appraises a bag at $20, it appears he overlooks several crucial aspects. These include the expenses associated with store upkeep, advertising, and logistics, which involves the transportation of goods from one location to another. Most significantly, he disregards the inherent cost of design. While I concur that designer handbags can often be exorbitantly priced, it's important to acknowledge that the value of design necessitates a certain premium.

Yes, if you are just looking for utility then any leather bag will do, but if you want something that is beautiful and unique from each designer, then there is no comparison. Also you should not buy these bag if you cannot afford them, I didn't really have designer bag until my student loans were paid off, I bought my first home, saved decently for retirement, then had discrepancy income to buy nicer thing. I love that you are making alternative perspective videos like this to open people's perspective.

    The most expensive bag I own is a second hand LV speedy 25. The only reason I bought it was because it was a “dream” bag from when I was a kid and thought these sort of purchases would be some sort of marker that I’d left behind an impoverished childhood. It wasn’t. Funny thing is that I rarely use it because it makes me feel a bit pretentious and the opening is really small. I do like natural leather goods for the durability and do shop brands for reliability of quality, but I tend to buy more affordable brands like Dooney and Bourke or Coach and even then I shop used and also downsized to just four bags total (large tote, small messenger, one satchel and one shoulder). I’d never pay thousands of dollars on a handbag or anything for that matter except a car.

  • @stefmercs9810
    @stefmercs98108 ай бұрын

    There is no link between the manufacturing cost (materials + labour) and the price, which also includes a huge amount of other costs such as concept design, marketing, store overheads, headquarter costs, advertising, transport/logistic, sponsorships/endorsement, and - more importantly - profit, which is based on how desirable the bag is, and that’s clearly where the brand takes advantage of the desirability they have developed in the hearts and mind of the consumer. Albeit quit a far-fetched comparison, trying to link the price of a designer bag to the cost of its components is like trying to link a painting/statue or other art piece to the cost of the materials used to produce that piece of art. Would you ever say a Picasso is only worth the cost of the canvas and paint? Of course I’m not suggesting a Prada bag is a piece of art, but there’s a lot more to it than a a piece of leather and a few bits of hardware.

    $20 is merely the cost of the raw materials. The TOTAL cost of making the bag is then marked up for retail so they can turn a profit. Luxury fashion is great example of the difference between knowledge and information. Companies operate on the knowledge that people want to FEEL better than others and use information such as average income to set their “aspirational” pricing. Consumers see celebrities (who didn’t pay for anything) associated with brands, commercials that reinforce emotional attachment to the idea of success and luxury and even after knowing they’ve been duped, still proceed to part with their hard earned cash. Ipso facto, luxury is the biggest form of widespread emotional manipulation outside of religion. Oh and I lived in China. I saw it all.

I have no clue what sustainable leather would be since it comes from cows, sheep, pigs, etc. and most places buy that from slaughter houses or from hunters. Since you can always 'grow' those animals , I suppose it would be considered 'sustainable'. Cotton for fabric would be also, except that a lot of these bag don't use cotton fabric, they use polyester, a blend or some other awful synthetic fabric. There are several costs a business has to cover to make a profit. labor, material, equipment, selling/marketing, logistics, shipping, people compensation. I'm not saying that these brands are not making an insane amount of profit, but it's not as easy as "the material of $x, the labor is $ y, and therefore you are overpaying by sales price - x - y". The formula is far more complicated. If you went with a mom and pop bag maker, those costs are most probably minimal so they can afford to charge a small mark-up; making them much cheaper.

It doesn't compare in quality and in leather to the Nike Jordan's where the leather feels synthetic. I realize $1070 is a lot of money and I know the Prada sneakers I bought is not worth its $1070 price tag, but trust me, I can't find anything as nice for $200-$600. It seems the clean design, craftsmanship and quality of leather is in contrast to other brands with a lower price point.

    Sorry, but NO. "luxury goods" only point out how stupid it is to spend money on something so ridiculous. If I put more than $20 into a LEATHER bag, I know I've wasted money that could go to something much more useful and permanent. I paid $50,000 to have my roof and porch rebuilt and new custom gutters installed. THAT was a worthwhile purchase. Spending exorbitant amounts of money on a leather sack to carry my stuff in is nonsense. "Smart and beautiful people" do not deserve anything more than the general population - and a bag can't buy a "level of love". It only shows how insecure and shallow the owner is - that they truly believe carrying a certain type of sack makes them special.

    Guess I'm an outlier. I couldn't care less about luxury, I'm just here to try to figure out why others do. Luxury's boring AF, honestly.

    No it isn’t… and the more people talk about it maybe one day more people realise that … especially considering negative impact on people when they get head to head with customers service and the fact that these brands do not value us the same… one time purchase and if you have issues they will even try to make it like you bought a fake or even gaslight you in to believing that occasionally using it will damage it that mich …

    Does the price really matter? I’m an avid Chanel collector and I would never let numbers deter me from procuring what I love I’ve bought 11 Chanel bags since the price increase and honestly I don’t feel contrite about it

    You can hold your stuff in a pillowcase. Buying expensive bags is plain stupid.
