Why do we love? A philosophical inquiry - Skye C. Cleary

Does romantic love have a purpose? Explore five intriguing philosophical perspectives on why we love.
--
Ah, romantic love; beautiful and intoxicating, heart-breaking and soul-crushing... often all at the same time! If romantic love has a purpose, neither science nor psychology has discovered it yet - but over the course of history, some of our most respected philosophers have put forward some intriguing theories. Skye C. Cleary outlines five of these philosophical perspectives on why we love.

@@nitishsharma7545 Nah, I don't think so. The mother loves her kid because it is "her kid" .(human babies are very dependent on mothers, so it could be a trick of the nature, for the survival of the baby) If you weren't your mother's kid she won't be loving you, so of course there's a reason why mother loves her child and vice versa. In that way I think there really isn't any selfless acts, we always do something hoping for something greater. We love hoping to get love back or simply because loving a particular person or thing makes us happy, so you see, all of it really is selfish. We help people because helping people make us happy, we do things for ourselves, we try to make ourselves happy.

That's very chemistry biology outlook. Nothing spiritual enlightenment about that kinda love. If u have all luxurious stuff unlimited good food clothes shelter cars video games gold Diamonds rubies etc to last next 10 generations without moving an inch from ur recliner. Will u go out to discover gravity or moon or mars? Unless u r bored with the money. Got obesity& diabetes, from eating non-stop or something Do you really have time to ask what's the purpose of the life? Unless u got too much free time on ur hands. Pain & Suffering are cut & clarity to diamond in rough that we are. Does one need love to be "happy"? Or Simply self-realisation & acceptance There are Asexual people out there. Do they not need love & friendship or are they buddha on way to nirvana? It's a deep question can be debated over thousands of books & philosophies across time. This comment section is too small to debate here

Well love isn't only about just kissing, hugging and emotional attachment! There are so many love languages, you just don't love a person, you can love a place, memory, the way your dog licked you lovingly, the smile after you get you see your family, a flashback when you see your long lost friend, the sense of peace when you're out in nature, a warmth feeling when someone really makes sense to you, a sunny feeling, hiding in the shadow of your mother when you're afraid, reading a phenomenal book, seeing a beautiful sky with someone or even just staring at the moon! Everything is Love, love is everything.

As a buddhist, I was never taught THAT but THIS. True love is never supposed to bring suffering. It's against the very nature but ATTACHMENT, oh boy! It definitely does. These are ,from the surface, looks the same but in reality, they are absolutely opposite. One is the cause of suffering and other is the eternal happiness.

There is a small part what the Buddha said. Then it gives wrong meaning. According to my knowledge of Buddhism love also a bond in mind (not a physical).bonds gives us a suffering. Therefore you have to omit in mind all things not to suffering (not physically). As an example you imagine lose your wear which you more like and wear which you don’t want. Then you more suffer about wear which you more like than other wear, Because Bond between you and wear which you more like wear is bigger than other one. All things are changing every year every minute even every second. (But most things we cannot sense in second, but we can sense it in year most probably). That’s the reality. Then surely we have to suffer, if we have a bond in mind.as an example 50 years later our face is being old. We suffer about it, if we have a bond in mind for it (If you have not omitted bonds at that moment, otherwise not). Nirwana awabodha (video say it enlignment. awabodha is like a understanding) is the maximum happiness in every moment. Simply if we destroy our bonds in mind (not physically), we never suffer for anything. They understood reality. But he said though you don’t love, you do maître. It’s also like a love, but haven’t any bond in mind. However person who got nirwana awabodha, do not hate anyone any things. (They have no bonds, they have no to get anything, they understood (not knew) all things are changing, they understood reality) (Reality is another subject. I will simply explain it. We sense the world by mainly six organs-eyes, nose…when we look a guy, we cannot see his skeleton. But x ray machine can do it. We only sense the world by six main organs. We cannot sense infrared also. Then if we don’t get nirwana awabodha, we cannot understand reality).mostly I may not be able to give right idea that what I need to give, specially right words I want to give my idea may not be put and I cannot tell more, Though I want tell. Cause I do not know English very well. I also know very very small things about Buddhism. (Actually it’s not a religion. religion also a bond).sometimes It might be wrong, because I do not get nirwana awabodha. Then study and practice it. And I wish u all to get nirwana awabodha and spend the life without suffering. Thank you.

@@LiLiotL uh.. I have a general approach which anyone can adopt which is to meditate, journaling and stuff like that. See meditation calms you down and has mannnyyy... benefits. Meditation teaches us not to get carried away with our thoughts. You might be reminiscing about the pleasant moments you've had with the person. I even used to do so coz it is so entertaining. But that's what the cause of your pain. The more you think of that person, more you'll fall into the trap. Meditation will give you a new direction. It will teach you to let go of your thoughts nd live the present moment. And you can practice journaling. In this, you have to write down your thoughts on a piece of paper. Journaling has the power to stop away your thoughts. Just dump your emotions into a paper and that'll lessen your reaction to the thought significantly and you'll feel better. For meditation I'll recommend you the medito app.

Love is your brain's addiction to the positive chemicals another person causes your brain to make. Relationships get closer and closer the more you trust someone, and someone you love is someone you trust the most, someone who knows your weaknesses but chooses not to hurt you with them. That develops a deep form of trust which in turn gives your brain positive chemicals that it becomes addicted to, making you want to be around that person all the time, and increase the chance of survival of both parties, and their offspring. Love is evolutionarily advantageous.

It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. In my opinion you should always take that leap to fall in love (although try and do it with a good person who will treat you right etc) because even if it ends in pain that means you lived life more vividly and you had that unique human experience. There is value in feeling pain too. Also, there’s a good chance you will feel amazing too. Idk, it’s hard for me to completely explain what I’m trying to say but my point is that I would much rather feel everything in life than nothing (which on a separate note is an affliction I actually really do have as I have BPD- borderline, not bipolar- and as a result feel every emotion 5000x more intensely than normal people-and still I would rather feel it all than nothing). Our lives are so short, why not take risks. Like yes, take calculated risks, but I think it’s crazy to never fall in love (although the way you and I are defining love might be different because my definition of love is caring deeply about someone and being in love = romantic love)

I've thought about love often. There are many different types of love we feel, so there is not one definition of it. However, I like to think that you love someone when you desire someone's happiness even more than your own. I read somewhere that true love is an act of submission, to let go of your self which would be an otherworldly experience with someone who feels the same, but is an incredibly risky endeavour with chances of losing touch with yourself and suffering in pain. In a way, Love is an adventure, and there's no adventure without uncertainty. Having experienced both its emotional high and lows, I'm slightly intimidated, but always in awe at its power. I think we shouldn't leave out love for our selves. Like everyone we love, we ourselves need to be loved, respected and cared for. Please look after yourself, take care of your body and mind and treat it with the love it deserves.

Love has an only meaning, is when you feel fine with your life, don't want anything, your feelings are more intense, like sadness for someone, wars, injustices, suffer, but at the same time you are more stronger to keep going. You act with kindess but not for wanting some reward, you do good things without thinking you're doing them, it's something that emerges naturally. You accept everyonen as they are, animals, plants and humans. You feel the world and you as one.

Love is really confusing. Some people fall in love easily but then there are also people that don’t fall in love at all or only very rarely. Maybe it depends on our personal life. If someone feels lonely or sees no point in life they fall in love more quickly. If someone’s already happy and has a lot of people that care about them, they might not see a reason for having another person that cares about them. Or maybe it depends on our feelings and their sensitivity. If someone’s very emotional they might fall in love more quickly than a person that is less emotional. Maybe Plato is right and we feel whole when we‘re in love. Maybe Schopenhauer is right and love tricks us into having baby’s. The other theories could be the truth of love as well. Love has so many meanings and reasons, it doesn’t make sense. Love is something good but also something awful. Yet we fall in love. Maybe it’s nature.

This is not "love" not even "true love", this is "unhealthy attachment". If you need someone to feel complete, for fear of feeling and being alone, to not feel depressed and to make you happy, then you would never find it this way. You need to look within yourself and seek healing from your past, your hurt, your pain and your loss and for the first time, discover the love of self. It's okay, you are already complete, you are already loved, you are already enough and true happiness is found within. Only then you are ready to experience "true love" where someone ADDS to these things which you already have and not provide the things you think you lack (attachment). In the end, should your lover choose to leave, you won't feel incomplete, you won't feel unloved and you won't fall apart because before you met them you were already complete, you were already loved and happy from the very start. True love conquers all.

Thank you.

love is an evolved responce to promote grouping of people for survival. humans are social creatures and desire acceptance and affection. Social creatures have this evolutionary advantage of numbers. We are naturally drawn to others and desire acceptance and affection because they are biological and social signs of safty. If you are accepted into a group the likelihood of that group being attacked and the likelihood that you are the one eaten are both dropped. Having the affection between group members makes the group more likely to fight together rather than leaving the group member to die. There are clear evolutionary advantages to love. love as we know it today being between romantic lovers developed much later, but as social creatures it makes sence that we continue to search for intimacy with others (especially the opposite gender for reproductive advantages). in the harsh structure of todays society many people do not have their social needs met and suffer from chronic loneliness that leads to pathological problems. many seek to remedy that by searching for romantic partners to fill up on our recommended amout of love. finding a partner would theoretically provide a more permanent source of affection and acceptance that we desire and need to feel safe and happy. love is a evolutionarily developed chemical reaction to promote the safty of the human experiencing it, nothing more.

Agree with last idea. Love lets us explore certain parts of ourselves that we would not know without. Loving a hobby or a favorite food is not the same as loving your romantic partner. Love makes us feel connected. I don’t think love is just to procreate or supposed to make us whole or is going to lead to suffering. A lot of couples love without having kids. You’re supposed to feel whole and happy before you’re in a relationship. Healthy love isn’t going to make you suffer unless you lose that person, but think about if you both live to old age together, then that’s not the issue. Love makes us do things we don’t usually do.

This is my girlfriend's observation - "They each hold the theory that there is only one reason for love. Each person thinks they're right with their understandings. They should look at it from a different perspective. Because there isn't just one type of love. Or rather not one type of romantic love. Therefore there is no specific reason for love, as each one holds a different meaning and reasoning for that romantic love. 1. There is infatuation. An unrealistic love. Where one imagines their life with another being, and they value that ones life too highly. It's a short lived love. 2. There's love for affection. Whether it be physical affection or emotional affection. It's the most common form of love in society. Where one craves something from another being to satisfy their true desire for life which they currently lack in life. Such as sex, romance, friendship, a family, trust, etc. Loves like those are very common. Which usually end in false hope or separation. As what they were seeking had been fulfilled, yet there was nothing else holding them together besides the things they wanted from each other. They should have looked at the person for who they were, instead of what they desired from them. 3. Then there's true love. A love for another beings self. Where one has grown attached to a person that interest them in a way no one has before. It's doesn't necessarily have to be a relationship love. Which would be a love to be with someone, (love for affection). Rather you just love the person for being who they are, and what they bring to the world. You want them to be happy in life. You seek no gain from them, but rather want them to excel in life and their dreams. You look at the way they treat people, their life goals, and how they see the world through their eyes. Of course true love can lead to a relationship. Nothing is needed from the relationship or sought out. It's love for knowing this person exists in your life and that you're sharing it with them, together. To sum it up; True love is when you love somebody for who they are and what they bring to the world, not for how they make you feel. These are the three most likely types of loves. There are others in between these types. Of course with each of these it doesn't have to be for both partners or non-partners. For example one could feel infatuation, while one feels love for affection. They weren't all talking about the same type of love in the video. Rather different loves, and the reasonings for those types of loves. Though they made it seem like they were all arguing on one specific love. Which is why in my belief they were all right and wrong with their findings." - isn't she smart and wise?

Love is not only a feeling or passion we have towards a other human or a hobby. Love is what holds us together, as an individual, a community and humanity. It connects us unconsciously with every stranger, friend, animal, all living being we meet, even if we only walk on by not consciously noticing each other. Some people feel this love stronger than others, which comes from the ego, the ego which covers the love what is living inside of us, which misleads a person of demonstrating false wishes or sense of life and self. The ego is build out of lies, protecting a person of hurtful memories and his past, burying the self somewhere we can only discover again by allowing to look in ourselves why we are so unhappy and in what way our ego leads us to things (patterns of relationships, distructive behavior...) that we actually don't really want to do to us. We have to trust our core, the love we all(!!!) have deep inside of us, that it never intends us to hurt us but to help us going through the painful things, so we can learn from them, making our ego smaller and the trust to ourselves stronger. Love shows us who we really are. Love goes beyond death. We are all part of this love, this energy. We love because it destroys the illusions we live in and gives us the chance to let us live our true selfs and making other people alert of their ego, so they become also more of their true selfs. Thats the purpose of a relationship, because the more you and your partner are getting more yourself, the better you get to know love itself and are able to love even more.

"love reach us beyond ourselves" I will agree with this.. I mean that's why most relationship fail because the other person doesn't make you much less of a better version of you.. some ended up on wrong people that can be toxic to them without noticing.. cause if love fails and desires are gone what is left is friendship.. without being friends and when love and desire was gone the tendency is there will be conflict between two parties. that's why most relationship ended in shambles .

  • @iMsBear
    @iMsBear8 жыл бұрын

Some of these reasons are very valid but I disagree with a number. Call me naive but I believe love exists not to fulfill our own needs or wants but to empower each other. I think that love is a very selfless act, when you truly love someone you love them for who they are, not for what they do for you. For example, I feel that if you love someone because they love you, because they're kind to you, that's more of you trying to preserve yourself isn't it? Or trying to escape loneliness? Of course there's nothing wrong with it, it's perfectly fine to love oneself. But if two individuals truly love each other, and try to empower each other, I think that it would be amazing. Not just romantically, but in terms of friendship and family, or love for an object, or interest is fine too. Love is when you devote yourself to others, I don't think it should be about self. And I don't think it's very logical as well (heck I don't think love is meant to be logical), how or why we love etc but that's what makes it interesting ;) Humans are made flawed and different. On our own we are weak but when we have others we love, and we love each other, we are stronger. We can compensate for what each other lacks, and when we devote ourselves to something other than us is when we see more of the world's beauty and the things that are larger in life, instead of always focusing on ourselves or our problems. Yes I am terribly naive. I know this kind of pure love probably doesn't exist but I feel that it's an ideal we should work towards. We might not achieve it but we will still become better people if we adopt such thinking. Of course there's a lot of risk involved, heartbreak is always painful (maybe you're always giving but never taking) so it's better to do it with caution:D Maybe because I'm relatively young so I view it this way, but it would be really great to find someone with the same thoughts as me!

Love has taken a different shape these days in our society, but as you said - it's not about focusing on ourselves, it is about giving from ourselves, not preserving the self (although a person doesn't love if he doesn't have that love to give from within himself in the first place), accepting one another, wanting for one another to flourish and to be the best possible version of themselves. Erich Fromm put it nicely: Immature love says - I love you because I need you. Mature love says - I need you because I love you. In my humble honest opinion, you are far from being naive. An explorer of human nature is what you are :D Your comment is the most lucid, realistic and truthful description of love I have read in these comments. Love is definitely illogical sometimes, sometimes painful, sometimes wonderful. But it is a part of human existence.. it's a lesson, enriching experience if we look at things outside of the box of our ego. Love thyself, for you are a droplet in the sea of sameness. Love the other as thyself for the world is the extension of your heart.

True. But love is not suppose to be like that. People want to have someone nowadays that's all. They feel lonely and they think that they will get rid of this loneliness by having someone which is false. They want someone to fit into that empty hole and they tried and tried countless of time to fit someone in it and eventually fail. The thing is that they want don't love to love but to get rid of their loneliness. So yeah of course they will feel lonely. The reason why people feel lonely is that they don't think of themselves as interesting or lovable so when they engaged in a new relationship they will find themselves interesting in someone's else eyes but then as time goes by this interest will decrease..not because this person don't find them interesting anymore but they, themselves start to think like this again. That's why people said in order to love you should love yourself first.Befriend yourself first.Your greatest enemy and friend will always be yourself.

Love has 2 basic forms, connection and relation, including a great amount of values in each one. Connection ...is the feeling of completion that comes from everything different than oneself, it is adventure, exploration and fear with excitement for the unknown. It is the yin-yang. It allows us to accept change and open ourselves to risk with courage, out of our comfort zone, in order to learn something new or find a good match of friend or lover. It is the exploration of the unknown that actually forms the image of who we are, differentiating it from the environment, shaping the unique idea we have about ourselves. Relation ...opposingly, is the feeling of being similar, verifying and validating yourself through common traits, beliefs or even states which could relate to objects, such as stillness of a sea, growth of a plant, grounding of a tree etc. which can actually relate to your own mental or physical state.

+ifer lyaf When he says "rather than be 'solved' to a quantifiable philosophical conclusion" he never said that philosophy is a science. Philosophy can be well informed by empirical research in evolutionary biology and other sciences before talking about love. And, for example, the philosopher Schopenhauer made a characterization of love that was to some degree "quantifiable" since he reduced the main goal of love to reproduction, something compatible with evolutionary biology.

+Combinemon I think it is because there is a greater chance of survival in bigger numbers. Some animals became social in that way. Friendship was probably a result of a give and take relationship that increased the survival rate of certain species. Notably, dolphins, chimps, elephants and humans. Since there was a greater chance of survival in groups, these species evolved negative emotions that we experience when we feel 'left out/lonely' to discourage us from leaving the group thus lowering our chances of survival. That's my personal theory. I just used 10th grade biology to come up with this, so some parts could be inaccurate.

I think it's kinda the ultimate powerful feeling we have, which has the power to distort our perception, and make us do seemingly impossible things. The world is rude, rough, tough. Being in love softens the reality we see, to be happy even when we're ruined. It gives us the courage and reason to do seemingly impossible things. Also, most importantly, it makes us care about things and people other than ourselves, increasing our social bond. True, it gives us pain. I probably got the most pain from the persons I loved, but if I get a chance to change the past, I won't change a single thing.

My opinion on the love subject is different, I believe it's all what your mind focus on for example a scientist fall in love with science because most of the time he or she ponder on science, a writer or novelist falls in love with writing, and a phylosopher falls in love with phylosophy so it's all your focus decide which thing you wanna fall in love with. if you think about a particular girl the whole time it's certain you are gonna fall for her so it's just a focus of your mind which plays role in developing love.

"We love to quench our physical and psychological desires." Even though all the explanations of the question "why we love" contained truth to some extent, my understanding of why we love is closer to Bertrand Russel's explanation. People tend to feel lonely at some point in their lives because of the enormous sizes of our never-ending universe and world. Loving someone protects us and cures loneliness because finding someone who shares similar thoughts, feelings, and attitudes makes you feel that you are not lonely; you are noticed, loved, accepted, and admired. You know that you can share the path of your life not alone but with someone you trust. However, I agree that love is not only about positive emotions, it can hurt, but I think people become whole with living both positive and negative emotions. And I think, love does not need a definition and it cannot be defined precisely. Everyone has their own perception of it and there is no right or wrong.
