Why do We Elect Narcissistic Leaders?

PBS DS Annual Survey: www.pbsresearch.org/c/r/AFS_Y...
A study finds that politicians score higher than other professionals on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, with a spike in characteristics like superiority, arrogance, and entitlement.

Toussaint Morrison talks with Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic about why we elect leaders that display over confidence and how this doesn't always correlate to competence. Does this issue come from the types of personalities of those that choose to run for office, or do we reward these characteristics with the way we vote? What would happen if we selected our leaders randomly, like we select our jurors for jury duty?

We elect narcissistic leaders because they are the only ones that run... I wonder if this applies to actors, sports stars, race car drivers, televangelists, etc... anyone who thinks they are the best and should be followed/famous.

You are exactly right. Normal people don't have a desire to be "powerful" or "famous" or any mindly creation; Only narcissists have this drive to do these things specifically for these reasons. Alot of musicians, actors, politicians, will say they're doing what they do because they love music, or they love acting, or politics but it's never true they only do these things explicitly for being "famous" or "powerful".

Our society values overconfidence and if risk-taking is a characteristic of narcissism then yes narcissists are actually the natural leaders that we deserve. Normal people are not capable of taking any risks or having confidence enough to be perceived as confident. Narcissists do whatever they can to appear confident so they get all the votes.

This video gets at the heart of the discussion that I think our country should be having right now: that government reform is needed and how we should go about it. I think its clear to most people that at the very least some things aren't working and could work better. I'm quite willing that we give everything a shot. Throw reforms at the wall and see what sticks. Let's enlarge the House. Let's try a new voting system, like ranked choice. Let's... randomly select our leaders from a qualified pool of candidates. I don't know if it can work, but could we try it? What would be the opportune lab environment to test out these ideas?

Not those who make headlines of a candidates high school prom picture... past errors... and leaves the family alone. I think something similar to jury duty in the sense it’s a pool of people who’re selected, then vetted and interviewed and maybe even shown to the public in mock elections or leader situations to see how they work? It would require a lot of people to work on it to make sure it’s an efficient and effective process but I think it could be done

America From Scratch System is the problem 🏡 Our Life should be around these Great Qualities..... 1, Show all living creatures; all the love and kindness as much as you can. 2, Only try to be honest with yourself. If you try to be honest with others, you will get into big trouble soon or later. 3, Aim only one target at a time; otherwise you are chasing two rabbits and you will miss both. So, the reason behind it. Have one powerful reason and never ever give up the one you want the most. 4, Don't try to be good person only but be the powerful person. We will grow to be the one or we will die. There is no other choice. 5, Always learn and look for to improve something your life. 6, You are not alone. Love and faith the high power reduces unnecessary stress in life. But never completely rely on it. 7, Success and happiness are the byproducts of our usefulness. So, always increase the possibility of success. 8, Life is not going to be easy. Because of our unnecessary things. Eliminate all the unnecessary things as much as you can by organising yourself well with the environments. 9, Never believe anything without the proper evidences. 10, Always try to give more than you take. Because it is dignity/ character of the divinity within you. 🌎 As long as people continue to see themselves as separate from everything else, they lend themselves to being completely enslaved. Success depends on how well we relate to everything around us. Joy comes from that bliss of connectedness. I believe that unarmed truth and love will have the final word in reality. To love; you should have good heart. I am a good person until I see a person better than my standard of goodness. Being good is the progress towards a worthy cause. Love is God. Whoever lives in love, lives forever. How selfish it is to try to keep something forever? Love is all about nourishing, nurturing, sharing and expanding the love within you for all. The principle to which we adhere to is that we have kindness of love at heart for the whole of mankind. As long as there is the unnecessary differences within us; we can not live peacefully so we have to eliminate all the unnecessary differences among us so we can love all. People abilities may vary but not there true love. If we love a person/ God for a reason then we love the reason but not the person. No reason is the reason to love the person because true love never fails. So do not compare or measure the true love as first or the last but love all truly. If you love people truly then you can understand people. If you don't love then you don't understand people at all. People are controlled by system why? The Cyclical Consumption is the current economy all over the World. It is making the scarcity problems of the earth finite resources to deteriorate day by day. Current Monetary System is legalised theft. Real money is Gold and Silver. Scarcity gives the money more value. Real money won't lose it's value. When Governments stay away from Gold & Silver then very easy to transfer the wealth / resources to upper class the Rich (Corporatocracy) Elite. When the Governments are printing out more new fiat currency with reserve banks, our old currency is losing its purchasing power everyday. They are printing millions of currency everyday. All governments and laws are existing right now to transfer wealth to upper class the rich elite. The USA Government & other Governments are in many countries, bailed the investment banks & financial institutions in 2008 against the majority of the people. There is no democracy in any countries. Because of the Money System based on profits motive only above all else even humans lives and well-being. So, we do not have freedom to protect our values with the money so on. The violence, bankruptcy & all the negativities are build into the Monetary System of our society. All are owned (including ourselves) by Reserve Bank. Which is private cartel the corporation. So, in legal system, we are legally considered as chattel the properties. They make money in the capital markets with our birth certificates. They do not consider us as Humans. That's the truth. We are at the invisible war with the Elites (Corporatocracies). We have to fight for our Freedom. Resource Based Economy is the Solution. We have to declare the earth resources as the heritage of all the people of this world. So everyone has access to it. Please have your research about zeitgeist movement then you know the truth more. Truth About Health/Drugs Industry Because Of It Your Life At High Risk The drug industry is a 1/2 trillion dollars a year worldwide conglomerate. Almost 300 billions dollars just in North America. That is really big business. What would happen if everyone were well? There is no money in health. You see, good health makes a lot of sense but it doesn't make a lot of dollars. Because everything they do is toxic. Every drug they use, prescription drugs, all drugs are liver toxic, bar none. If you've had amalgam fillings put in your mouth by dentists. It is highly toxic. There's cancer because most of the chemos are themselves carcinogens. To view the tumor as the cancer and we know the tumor is not the cancer. The cancer industry is 200 billions dollars a year. The more work they get, the more profit there is. You have to dismantle; If the truth ever came out about what we would need to do. 30% of people of females in America are at risk of getting, will get cancer of the breast. The ones that are already dead have been grossly mistreated by the medical profession and by the government that supposedly is supposed to encourage free research and development of all possibilities. Why would medical doctors who studied medicine and practice medicine and are heavily funded by pharmaceutical companies why would they go and look into vitamins? That they never had the answer orthomolecular. And as more and more of our population start taking their health into their own hands, there's going to be even more and more of changes. It can't go on the way it is. The system is failing apart. We must make nutrition the primary prevention strategy for the population. You are what you eat. You are everything that you have ever done to yourself. The choices you make directly affect the outcome of your life. - (Food Matters Documentary in Netflix) 😊 Well, I truly love God. I am not religious but very spiritual person. So, I believe 1) Religion is the beliefs in someone experiences But spirituality is having my own experiences. The mainstream religions people promote religious ideology by giving guidelines and guide but In my spiritual life; I do not want anyone or anything between God and me to restrict my freedom to worship God. 2) We do not need any authorities to do good work. The god work is the good work always. In contrast; organised mainstream religions are claiming that they have the authorities to do God works as leaders so on. 3) God is not capable of doing wrong thing, change the past for us and create anything out of nothing for us. Nothing means not anything. So, even God is limited. The mainstream religious people believe that God is unlimited. 4) God wants us to take responsibilities for our righteousness life but not for all the consequences of our actions because they are continued to exist among us. So, How can god punish us for all our consequences? The mainstream religious people believe we are full of sins because of all our actions. 5) Freewill is an illusion. People always choose the perceived path of greatest pleasure. So, we do not have choices all the time. In contrast teachings of the mainstream religions are promoting people to do god's will always because we all have choices of freewill always. 6) We can not separate everything into groups. So, everything for good and evil and there's no success and failure for everything. If everything is real then real things can not be threatened. Once you come to understand that God/The Holy Spirit is in each of us, You will no longer need a Book to tell you how to live. Then why we need religious scriptures? The Virtue is the expression of the basic goodness in our actions. The Basic goodness is the fundamental worthiness of every individuals. We are worthy to God always in everything. 7) Beliefs in a cruel God makes a cruel man. No matter what; every living creatures has the right to live and What makes their life cheap? Everything depends on everything. Nothing too big or too small in value. We can not love and hate at the same time; Being a vegetarian means love without cruelty happily. The mainstream religious people are killing people and sacrificing animals in the name of God. They promote God's cruel punishments. The Punishment is endless for Sinners/Devil according to religious scriptures. But God is love always. Overcome hate with love. If all religions for peace, unity? No way. Because they are not for peace. 8) Well, The God gave us everything to go from moment to moment in our lives as we do our part and pray only to thank god then the Love is in progress. The Love is always for everyone. We are always worthy of the God's love. Our greatest fear is; not to be loved by anyone but we are all loved by someone. When we eliminate all our unnecessary differences among us then true peaceful life is possible with the true love. If we can't find the peace within ourselves then we will never find it anywhere else. 9) This is the Fight for independence and freedom of humanity to worship God freely without religious guide and guidelines to restrict us. Unnecessarily, We do not want third party controls over us in anything ; especially in spirituality. 10) Revive Survive Thrive. Sincerely, The Real Peacemaker against religious oppression. kzread.info/dash/bejne/epaqpdqGlsaxppc.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYCux8Oke6aclqg.html

For other jobs a person has to go through a progression of jobs to get to that point. If a person wants to be the captain of a Navy ship, he/she has to first be commissioned as a Navy officer. Then he/she has to go through a progression of jobs like weapons officer, operations officer, etc., culminating with being a ship's XO. Maybe there should be a progression of jobs to require a person have before becoming president. This could include executive management, such as being a state governor, and international diplomacy, such as being an ambassador.

So many possibilities for electoral reform, none of them perfect, but many stand a good chance at being better than what we have now. Liquid, proportional, or direct democracy would all be fascinating to see played out at a large scale but people are so entrapped in the current system and its crises that reform at this scale is almost impossible. When I talk to people about democratic reform they look at me like I've just suggested that, during the Super Bowl, we play basketball instead. Quebec is currently dealing with an MMP referendum and I hope that it passes, to incite the rest of Canada to see the benefits of better representation and maybe eventually the US. I think American exceptionalism stems from its geographic isolation and arrests its civil growth; often Canada is cited as an achievable model for US health care, maybe in a decade it could become the same thing for government.

I have a thoery that being honest is highly detrimental to one who stands on a political stage. Imagine two candidates are running for office, let's say both hold a view on climate change that it's a lie and there's no evidence to support it. Then let's say one day a ground breaking new piece of evidence is shown to them by scientists who advise them, showing that climate change is in fact a real concern. Imagine one of the two candidates is a real and true to himself and examines the evidence then changes his stance on climate change in light of new data, like any intellectually honest would... his opponent is also smart enough to realize that the new data proves that Climate change is real....but tactically he maintains his position that it's false and then publically ridicules his political opponent for "changing his mind every 2 minutes"and "being unsure of himself" - confidence in the honest man has dropped as a weak leader has been exposed - or so it seems. This IMO is a micro analogy that shows honest and down to earth people are filtered out of the political process early on... which helps explain why throughout history so many wars have taken place, so many psychopathic dictators have been in power etc.

Awesome idea in theory but there is no way to democratically pre-vet candidates before they run for office. The reason people used to be “pushed by their peers” is because the US was much closer to an aristocracy than it is now. I think narcissistic leaders is a small price to pay for democracy, and i think without a majorly different culture of civic engagement narcissistic leaders are an inherent part of any democratic system. The central problem is that the definition of a qualified leader in a democratic system is that they have the mandate of the people, and any merit they may have over anything else is purely accidental. But I don’t think a random selection would provide remotely capable leaders.

I think government by random lot, sortition, would result in much better politicians than we have today. It is true that many of those chosen would not be particularly informed about politics but once they are chosen politics would be their job and I think they'd rise to the occasion, especially if given a handsome congressional salary. What's more, I think it would increase civic and political engagement. Sortition guarantees that their country's politics closely resembles the public's general political will. Actually representing us will make us more interested in participating.

If you look at the way many continental European countries pick their president it is interesting... now admittedly many directly elected them and they run and also the system I’m about to describe is used only for presidencies with a limited constitutional role such as mediating in coalition talks and refusing to sign unconstitutional bills but basically parliament elects them and they don’t run. For example in Italy Parliamentarians get to write the name of the president they want to see on the ballot directly and no one runs... often parties push forward candidates but even those candidates are chosen by party leaders and not by the candidate themself. The current president is mattarella whose brother was killed by the mafia and matarella himself is a respected former constitutional court judge, this tends to produce more humble leaders, especially as the Italian president traditionally only serves a single 7 year term although, against his will, the parliament picked matarella for a second term in 2022 because they held 8 rounds and for many of them people submitted blank votes being unsure who to vote for, which is a downfall of this system of just letting voters organically chose.

Yes!! This ! Now I see why I was so shocked that Trump actually became president. I was looking for president elects with character traits such as humility , intelligence , compassion, and an ability to see all sides, etc. I often see too much arrogance as a possible (although not always ) red flag . I don’t see it as a sign of ability . The only thing I wondered about in this video is why they didn’t mention Donald Trump for narcissism? He seems like one of the best examples of it and I’m wondering g what made the producers of this video choose to use some of the presidents they used. Even though Obama and both of the bushes may have some narcissism , I feel like it’s milder than those like Trump and Clinton . I’m also thinking.....” is it even fair for any of us to be making assumptions without definite proof “ such as in the case of Linden Johnson . I mean he even abused his family . I don’t doubt what goes on behind closed doors with other presidents that we don’t see though. I do see that we choose bad leaders overall or so it seems .

@@AmericaFromScratch I don't know if it would do anything _directly_ to affect overconfidence, but I do think the slowing and extending effect ranked-choice voting would have on the elections process could at least _discourage_ the use of overconfidence on the part of the candidates as a tactic to gain votes - particularly in a post-Trump political landscape where a lot of people will see overconfidence as a red flag, if not something to actively vote against.

@@LexYeen Think about it this way: for any person to choose to run for President they have to believe they are the single best qualified person for the job. That right there is a big red flag of being a narcissist. No matter what voting method is used, the self selection of narcissists happens way before voting does. It's the old Simpsons joke about voting for Kang or Kodos.

Instead of an Athenian route with random appointments, I think we should go the Spartan route. In Sparta, according to their constitution, the Ephors (the primary legislators) faced a rigorous examination by their successors at the end of their 1 year term. All Ephors were randomly appointed, but the examinations were what really curtailed abuses of power. Similarly, I think the president should be put on trial every 6 months and have to go before a semi-random jury. I say semi-random because the jury should contain a wide variety of experts to properly assess the President’s action and random citizens to be convinced by said experts until a majority vote is reached. The punishments of a guilty verdict should fit the crime, of course and range from jail time to capital punishment. The concept that you and I are equal to a government official like the President is pure fiction. If the President wants someone dead, he can make it happen and suffer little recourse because Congress doesn’t have the guts to put any meaningful checks. No one else is in a remotely similar situation. Presidential immunity is a stupid concept anyway and just destroys the balance of power. Do you get immunity if you’re on jury duty? No? Then we are not the same. If we really wanted equality, we’d put a price on power. All of the rights of a citizen should be guaranteed for the average person but slowly shrink as a person attains positions of greater power. For example, if someone’s elected to the House, they 4 amendment rights against unlawful searches should disappear. People entrusted with legislative power are fully in the public sphere. Anything they do or have done is of utmost relevance to the public good. That should be the minimum price of power.
