You realise that Portuguese, spanish, french, Italian, Romania and probably a few others were all BASED ON the original latin of the Roman empire? Their letters are going to be fairly similar although the WORDS of the French drifted the furtherest away from the other latin languages. But it all READS the same. English isn't a great deal further off either. So as an English speaker I can see how Vietnamese is meant to sound. I also speak Spanish and another 3rd language as well so the Spanish helps.

Your English accent is surprisingly good compared to most Vietnamese I have worked with (almost all southerners). I was always surprised by the Vietnamese writing and when I see it, it's VERY easy for me to know what it's meant to sound like. English is my first language, another heavily modified English with bits missing and with native tribal words called Bislama is my second language, and spanish (latin based) is my third language and hopefully Vietnamese will be my fourth.

But doesn't having a phonetic writing system lead to ambiguity and confusion if there are different words that sound exactly the same? Or does each word have a unique sound? Yes it’s extremely confusing because one single word has so many definitions and depending on the context, we will have different meanings Nước: Đất nước: country Chai nước: water bottle Nước cờ: a chess move Etc. So Vietnamese learners must use a group of words or a whole sentence in order to have a definition for that word

Plenty of languages (including English) written in the Latin alphabet have words that are spelled the same. It's a small price to pay for not having 6000+ characters. The Egyptians replaced their pictogram hieroglyphs with a phonetic alphabet for good reason. The question is why the Chinese didn't. It has been theorised keeping an unwieldy writing system was a deliberate choice to keep the general public illiterate and oppressed.

In Vietnamese culture, having a beautiful hand writing is very important. When we were little, our teachers always stressed the importance of this. We even have a saying “Nét chữ, nết người” meaning having a beautiful handwriting shows that you have a beautiful personality as well.

Juan Dalisay Jr. In the North of Vietnam, people pronounce d & r like z but it is not like that in the South. Southerners pronounce d & r differently from z. You can check out my alphabet pronunciation video. Y sound is definitely not the same with g at all.

Realise also that some latin letters LOOK like English but actually are different. I speak Spanish and in English terms, their h is silent, their j is said as h, l is just l, but ll is said as y, and v is often said as b but sometimes as a letter that sounds in between v and b. So while English is close, it doesn't always sound like latin based languages.

To say Vietnamese has roots like in English is wrong since Vietnamese, like Chinese, is a monosyllabic language while roots occur exclusively in multisyllabic languages. however, that doesn't mean you can't deprive the meaning of a Vietnamese word based on its pronunciation. Vietnamese vocabulary contains words referred to as từ hán việt (汉越词) which are words that originated from ancient Chinese and account for up to 40% of Vietnamese vocabulary, even more so in formal/academic use. By understanding the meaning of each individual han viet syllables, the meaning of Vietnamese words composed of those syllables can be made clear very easily

@@jiaweigu2765 not sure of the "roots" like those of English, French and other European languages. But as a Chinese language learner, I'd say a good number of Vietnamese words has their roots in Chinese, it's just that these words are either formal-sounding or old-fashioned (though a small percentage would still be in common use), it's just like the word "content" in French simply means "happy" in English, but if this same word is used in English to mean "happy" (I am content), then it sounds a little formal, right? Likewise, the word "khả ái", which comes from the Chinese word "可爱, keai", is the formal version of "dễ thương" (cute)

It may be worth considering that literacy rate and latinization aren’t always connected. For example, the French heavily endorsed latinization in education where before there really was not much incentive for people to learn chu nom or enough teachers to teach it while they did other stuff. After all, why tf would an esteemed court official take the time out of his day to teach an impoverished peasant how to write for little monetary gain, when his uncle’s favorite nephew needed his tutelage on the calligraphy exam section? Missionaries and French instructors on the other hand have nothing to do except teach, not to mention counter examples of illiteracy like Mandarin, Cantonese, and whatever monosyllabic language in Asia. In the end, if we wanted pure practicality as a society, then we’d all be speaking Toki Pona in hangul script, taking at most a couple years before literally everyone in the world spoke the same language.

Thanks for the nice video, also in view of the questions asked, an important addition. The Chu Quoc Ngu is nothing more than a representation, using the Latin alphabet, of how the words of the logographic script were pronounced. The basics, the grammar, how words and sentences are constructed in Vietnamese is still the same as the past thousand years. To know how the Vietnamese words have developed, you need to master the original nom script. Perhaps the biggest difference between, for example, English and Vietnamese is the use of tones. Vietnamese has only 6 tones (in the south even only 5) and those tones have an exclusively vocabulary meaning. English has many more tones, just think of the different ways to say 'yes'. But in English we can also use sound and tones in grammar, for example to make a sentence questioning. And even more essential: to add emotional meaning. You can't do that in Vietnamese. Whoever wants to learn to speak Vietnamese has to learn to speak in a very boring way with a few limited tone options. In short, the pronunciation difficulties do not arise because of the use of tones but because of the fact that Vietnamese has many more sounds than there are vowels. including the diacritics. There is no marking at all for many Vietnamese sounds. No problem for the Vietnamese, who learn to speak their language before they learn to read. The logographic grammar, word and sentence structure is completely different from the alphabetic one. Eh, not really. Anyone who learns the other romance languages knows that they're just accents demonstrating the different sounds a letter can make. This is unlike English where you got words like Minute (as in time) and Minute (as in small) which have a different pronunciation of the letter 'u' that you gotta parse through based on context. Accents wind up making it easier to differentiate without needing context and habit, though

I personally like that Vietnam use the Latin based alphabet vs other Asian countries. I learned how to read and write within a week. These accent symbols are basically like music notes. Once you got the alphabet down, you're good to go.

@@ems7623 the chinese colonised Vietnam for hundreds of years and replaced their original writing system with chinese characters. Thats why most viets live in a false reality of believing they are more associated with east asian culture, but in reality their original culture was erased and they have southeast asian genetics similar to tai and laotian.

It takes so many years for a person to know how to read and write in Chinese character, while it takes only a few months to learn the Latin writing system. If you can't tell the difference between how hard and easy to learn the two systems, then you must be a loser.

Chinese people don’t have problems with learning their characters. In my opinion, I like current Vietnamese alphabet, however I think it’s sad the old script isn’t more widely taught since a lot of meaning to the words and culture is lost.

Roman alphabet is efficient but nowhere near comparable to the magnificient beauty of Chinese characteres in which I consider to be art.

While there are benefits I think it is also sad that some parts of Vietnamese culture is lost, and the words start to have less meaning.

Is it a problem? Not at all. The voice or the pattern of sound no matter what the period it is ( Chữ Nôm or Chữ Quốc Ngữ). It is the same sound. And we can write any sound that it already have existed in Chữ Nôm by Chữ Quốc Ngữ. All Of Vietnamese know that thing

And with alphabets languages change faster, modern English is hard to understand English from just a few hundred years ago. And part of Vietnamese culture is lost which I personally find sad

You realise that BEFORE THIS Vietnamese words were just 80% CHINESE right? Add to that about 1000 years of the Chinese trying to make the Vietnamese become Chinese.... should be glad you AREN'T just a branch of china. Or by your username maybe you ARE ALREADY. I know MOST older Vietnamese are happy they aren't a branch of china. Most Vietnamese I know hate china.

I think they're quite different. It's closer to the portugize phonology though.
