Why do throttle actuators go bad? (How to replace) + Coilpack replacement E92 M3

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My car went into "limp" mode and we ended up having to replace the coil packs and the throttle actuators. We show how they work, what they do and how/why each part goes bad. I hope this brings you some value and helps educate the community! Please thumbs up if you enjoyed this video.

Hi Spencer, really thanks for your videos you made with Mike. I´m just 1 day to late to watch it but now it´s a confirmation for me that I´m busy to do the right things on my M3. By nearly every engine start, the car goes immediately in "Limp Mode" and if not, it´s after few kilometres. I found on internet what could be the problem and started disassembling ignition coils, spark plugs, throttle actuators but till I saw your videos now, I wasn´t really sure about it. So thanks to You and Mike that I can continue without doubts. I would like to send you few photos about it but I don´t know where I can upload. For your information, I´m a Belgian, working in Slovakia and living in Budapest Hungary and got a big help from You and Mike :-)

This is a great channel!very useful information! Im a small dealer, I just bought 09 M3 e90 with 129k miles. falling in love with it already. So far everything seems in great working order. I dont have any repair records on it, so its a mystery, if any of common things such as rod bearings or throttle actuators, has ever been replaced. I hope, with such a mileage they have been worked lol.car drives and sounds very good, no suspicious sounds, by comparing with others and your videos. But just educating myself on all of this,.incase I have to do it. Very helpful!!! And this shop seems to be very honest and very experienced. Subscribed.

I know that the owner of Precision says that the TAs go out 50k - 70k miles "usually" but I have 3 buddies with E9X M3s and their TAs went out between 120k and 140k miles. I am at 80k miles and although I have changed almost everything that there is to change on my E92 M3 6MT, I have yet to have the car show any sign to me that the TAs are about to go. Perhaps one variable that nobody discusses is how hard the owner drives their cars doing multiple hard launches, donuts, track driving, cold start revs, or drifting. I would like to hear more backstories from people in addition to what mileage they changed out their TAs. Or does anyone know of a database that M3Post or some other forum (such as MGruppe) has that has collected the statistics on when an E9X M3's TAs were replaced?

Ignition coils increase voltage ⚡and decrease current (Ampers). High voltage (tousand Volts) is necessary to produce reliable spark even for small distances like spark plug electrode gaps. Spark with 120 A (Amps of current) as guy says would melt engine, thats energy used for welding steel 4-6mm thick

Tyler Padgett yes, one controls one bank and the other the second. However, given they are such a known issue for being prone to failure, I could have saved a good chunk of money on labor by just replacing both when the first failed. Labor is a large portion of the cost to replace these. But...this was back before it was quite as widely known of an issue, so...first failed and I replaced. Within 5k miles, the second failed.

Just got an 08 and I have spent so much money to make it super solid. Now have to do valve cover gaskets, rear pinion seal on diff, overhaul on brakes, etc. Guess I should consider this if I’m doing valved cover gaskets. But damn another 1300$. I could cry.

As a past BMW tech, back in the e36, e34 etc days, I can definitely say BMW has cheapened the absolute crap out of all of the cars and parts after the era I worked on them in. Plastic fucking throttle actuator gears on a $70,000 car is flat out criminal. The “friction coupling” crank gears are another example, for $70,000 on a damn ‘Motorsport” car, that should be billet one-piece from the factory. 1.25 mill crank bearing spacing and then on top of that specifying 10-60 weight oil in those engine is plain German stubbornness for no reason. BMW knowingly shipped thousands of ticking time bombs due to engineer ego. BMW stopped caring about quality after the late 1990s/early 2000s. It’s clear as day. Let’s review, BMW stands for: Break My Wallet, Bring Money With, Bavarian Manure Wagon, Bitch Moan Whine, etc. “the ultimate driving machine” my ass.

One thing that he doesn’t get wrong is that it’s bull Shit. This guy is like a 10year old with a toy that has no batteries in it. Follow your factory settings and unless you really feel the need, don’t go to his lengths to find any faults.

At this point, 3D printed high mileage gears for throttle actuators are not expensive at all and more reliable. Dude, stop spreading bullshit to where it makes people afraid to buy cars that they really love. Honestly I was really afraid to buy an e92 M3 up until I realized that you do not know what you were talking about. You don’t do research and look at real time issues, you just look at codes.
