It's not a theory. I think it was Skip who said that hJokic shouldn't win the MVP because "he was too boring and that would be bad for the publicity/marketing of the league" (paraphrasing). Mainstream media like ESPN don't like Jokic because they can't make a story out of him. Even when they are outright bashing him, Jokic responds in a mild mannered way. They can't sell a story like that. Mainstream NBA media sells more on the drama rather than the game itself. Hence why they hate euro players because most of them don't have controversies around them. And even when baited, they respond in a way that won't make headlines.

In Europe and the rest of the world, sports are sport. It is very tribal, very traditional, very grass root, players generally play for their home team or the team that raise them - they form some sort of attachment. You rarely see them demanding trades, they are usually traded or simply let their contract expire. A lot of people think too hard about why Dirk stayed forever in Dallas or Italian-born Kobe stay loyal to Lakers and supported his childhood team AC Milan despite them generally sucking hard post Calciopoli scandal. It is not hard to see why Jokic, Doncic, or Giannis stayed in their team - the same with Hakeem, he may have a stint in Raptors, but you always remember him as Rockets. They want to win it with their team instead of flying around the states ring-chasing, kind of meaningless. They rather be like Mehmet "Memo" Okur - still loved and cheered when he returned to Salt Lake City long after retirement. As for why Harden? is embarassing for Harden got CP3, then Westbrook, before finally join forces with KD and Kyrie, then tag along with Embiid cs, yet still ringless. Again, CP3 - that guy "barks a lot" said a lot of NBA veterans. You kinda expect such shit talker to be able to back it up - but that guy just choked everytime it matters. He tag teamed with Blake Griffin, James Harden, Devin Booker, and still didn't get what he needed. In USA, a "professional sport" is a circus, a minstrel, a show, an entertainment - the NBA comes with its media, be it new or old that keeps on producing crap to get people hooked. Shaq says that "you are not rapper, you are an NBA player" about Ja Morant's situation - and he really need to say it, because there is almost no difference between clout-chasing social media influencers or artists and overhyped NBA upstarts. It is a bit like WWE but without the storyline script. As for its dumb media: yeah, freedom of speech is good and all - but it is just a right, not something that you need to constantly exercise to prove that you still have it.

I think it has to do with a) the fact that these players are not the product of the standard accepted way of highschool into college basketball, which for some reason is glorified in the US b) they do not share the value of arrogance and trashtalking that is also glorified in the US because it creates narratives, thus increased viewership, analysis tv shows and revenue in general. Jokic or Giannis are too humble for Nba standards. So was Dirk or Gasol or Stojakovic. The us culture by default is not one that values humility.

I think it's about basketball culture on those two continents in general. In USA Basketball is considered one of the 'coolest' sports. I never got that impression growing up in Europe. Might be just my experience, but there was this general mindset that basketball was on the lamer side. There were several much cooler feeling sports like football (soccer), ice hockey and even obscure stuff like floorball that attracted the types of people that tend to play Basketball in the USA. Hell, I encountered more trashtalkers that played chess that ones that played basketball lol, but I suppose that was probably a coincidence.

@ar go wouldn't say basketball was seen as less cool than floorball lmao. Generally the prestige of a sport correlates with ease of access + financial backing. And if there is no money in it then it's not cool either.

Every gym (school or sokol) is basically a basketball arena. There are outdoor fields too. Granted czechia was never big basketball country, but the sport is seen as basically a PE afair along with that lame kind of volleyball, futsal and floorball. Giannis put pressure on himself before any media outlet out there started talking and he won a Championship while playing for a smaller franchise. Jokic has a different personality and playstyle but he's at the very least as much competitive as the next guy, though he's also after all said and done, playing for a smaller franchise. It's not that complicated, smaller town means less pressure. Plus if you want to make a case of him being an underwhelming MVP, he really doesn't care about it at all and specially not when compared to the MVPs of the past. Denver and Jokic simply can't have as much pressure on them to win a championship in comparison to a big team that is full of great marketing options and with multiple all-star players, the Clippers should have more pressure to win a championship just because they are from LA and because they got Leonard, George and now even Westbrook!

It's pretty simple. In the past 15 years American superstars have been team-hopping to win a ring, they themselves are adding to the pressure of winning a ring before their talents fade-out, meanwhile you have 4 foreign superstars sticking to the same team since the beginning of their careers patiently building a culture there and waiting for the team to build around them, it's not the same. This might change if Luka gets too upset with the Mavs and demands a trade in the next few years though.

  • @VinceLyle2161
    @VinceLyle2161 Жыл бұрын

It's because of their style of play. Team-oriented, great passing, a lot of misdirection, which can tend to make opponents look like chumps, even when they're playing great defense. Nobody likes looking like a fool, and when Jokic threads the needle and creates a layup by passing through three defenders, he makes American-born players look foolish. And that's a problem when 3/4 of players in the NBA are part of a certain group of people. Respect is a commodity for them, and making all their effort look foolish is construed as a lack of respect. A guy like me (who doesn't look like the majority of NBA players) watches Luka and Jokic and thinks, "Wow. These guys are a joy to watch. That's how I like to see basketball being played."Someone who does look like the majority of NBA players might watch the same play and get angry, thinking it was a deliberate slap in the face. This is probably what's behind Kendrick Perkins' takes. He sees Euro players as interlopers, but so long as they were relatively ineffective like Toni Kukoc or overshadowed by Americans like Manu Ginobili, it was fine. But Luka and Jokic are bona fide stars, leaders of their teams. And I think Perkins isn't alone in thinking basketball kind of belongs to Americans, and specifically to Americans who look like him. It's too bah he feels that way. I personally never watch the guy, except for snippets on these videos. I'd be willing to bet Jokic and Luka don't either. These guys don't seem like they set out to make themselves unhappy. They play ball as long as they can, get paid, go home to their families, and then get ready for the next season where they do it all again.

The NBA actively looked to expand their product and talent pool to draw from internationally. The issue is territorial more than racial. Pride in your country’s talent versus other country’s is universal, especially when the media feeds the “us versus them” conflict. If a racial slant does exist it is within the NBA hierarchy seeing a huge shortage of white stars in the league with their audience consisting of a high percentage of white fans and their only pool of white players having to come from overseas and to much lesser extent, Canada.

They clearly missed the part of the game where Giannis busted a 50-point triple-double lol. I think Embiid can still truly be the best big man in the game. They’re teams might win in the next few years, but their time being a driving force is likely coming to an end. Team situation matters too, dame is better than both those guys this year, but isn’t listed as Portland is not sniffing the WCF. Luka, Tatum, Jokic and I would say Embiid are next as they are young players whose next step is to win

Sports Media is just there to stir the pot. I remember during one old interview, Mark Cuban point-blank asked Stephen A, "what's the purpose of the zone defense?" Now at this point of their discussion, Stephen A was already on Cuban's case, ragging him about something with the Maverick's gameplay (you know how that looks like if you've watched a few SA interviews). So what was SA's answer? Nothing. He stopped for a sec, dumbfounded. He couldn't tell Cuban what the zone defense was for if his life was on the line, and his lack of basic basketball knowledge really showed. That's when I knew SA and his kind are just there to be agitators of whatever subject fancies them. So I take the bombastic sports media headlines with a grain of salt. They're not making me click, watch, listen, read anything they have to say. That's why after a few minutes watching this, I zoned and peaced out lol

Main reason is esthetic. USAs favourite basketball is the playground 1vs5; the "lets dribble like kyrie irving, not to get closer to the rim, but to shot 3 points like curry". European players are more into the 5vs5, which is less flashy, but is more beautiful on the long run (imo). Of course, this is only a generalization. 80s Celtics and 2000s Spurs were very "european". And Luka is European, but he does a lot of that individual "dribble and 3point"

Luka is easily overachieving for his age, he will enter this convo in 4-5 years if he doesn't win it in this time. Joker finally has a competitive roster, so it's his first attempt at winning it all - lets watch and see how he does, the pressure is just starting for him. Lack of trash talk culture is a big big factor. Not only does America have a sporting culture of arrogance (particularly prevalent within the NBA and a few other sports), it's coupled with a focus on individual ability. Europe doesn't have either in quite the same way, partly because of a different social culture across the continent and partly because Europe is very much a football first region. This has two consequences, first the players have grown up playing a sport that has significantly less prestige and general public interest, and two, because football is so global, the most popular sport on earth and of all time, the sporting culture is less given to cockiness because of sheer competitiveness. When you have such a massive player pool you cannot succeed ever thinking you deserve anything or are better than you are. There'll just be another guy as good as you with a mindset more conducive to improvement and hardwork.

They feel a certain way and because of that are looking for anything to back up their own personal feelings and tbh it even is as bad as to where perkins idea gets debunked within minutes. Just goes to show that a lot of the time we hear bs from people trying to say the players are a brotherhood and try to talk about being pro player on issues but at the end of the day people are just selfish like the rest of us, they're all about maximising their brands and if that means dragging down other players for clicks then they'll do it

Until very recently, European stars have been role players. Pressure is not on role players to win championships. Teams that win have at least 3 superstars and usually have their 6th man better than starters across the league.

@ Ncut Hoops, Stick to the topic at hand. Neither Luka nor Jokic are getting pressured by mainstream media for not winning a championship. Neither are they getting negative media coverage for their piss poor defense.

Nobody plays defense why single out luka that’s 1 and 2 luka is in his 5th year along with jokic and already made the play offs and came in with low to non existent expectations from the media so there was no standard for them like the American born players so again what point are you even makin jus grasping at straws at this point

Let's be real the NBA is by far the most predominantly black professional sports league and the only league where a majority of the all time greats are black, so I do believe some black players feel some type of way seeing these white European players coming in and getting all these accolades and spotlight the NBA has been a black man's league for decades now and these white Euros coming over and succeeding is most likely evoking jealousy amongst some.

I dont really think dramond is complaining about foreign players, he's talking about how he dosnt understand how the media over the years haven't pushed forgien players to win a chip. In his tweet he litterly says "European players have not caught the same flak..." I'm pretty sure he's not talking about Eu players as in them personally but in the fact that the media and other outlets aren't pushing the player's IE jokic a "almost" guaranteed 3 time mvp who hasn't made it far in the playoffs yet. and other players as well. Think he's more calling out media outlets and steven a for not having them higher or on thier list at all for needing to win a championship or doing better in the playoffs. He isn't "HATING" on the forign players hes hating on the media that they arnt held to the same standarded of flame / trashing as they american players.
