Why Do Stupid People Not Realize They Are Stupid?

Ever met someone who is so extremely dumb that they don’t know how stupid they actually are? Ever tried to explain a new concept to someone who clearly doesn’t get it? Well, you’re not alone. Researchers have come up with a theory that explains why the less we know about something, the more confident we are in our ability to master it. So there’s a term for Dumb and Dumber? Yes. And it is more common than you might think. Join us today as we explore the avenues of dumbness, in this episode of the Infographics show - What is the Dunning Kruger effect?

The problem is that the ego is connected or rather resides within the intellectualized part of the mind. The ego rules. It is always right. It's great and better than you. So when confronted with information that proves the individuals weaknesses, rather than acknowledge the fact, the ego when 'challenged', it's #1, it utilizes self deception. By doing that the individual still can maintain it's sense of greatness that the ego requires. The result, a fool is convinced they are a genius by means of self deception. Self deception works against our awareness and it is one of man's greatest problems. Or in other words, the whole mental process is probably flawed and almost all humans are not aware of this problem.

Being treated like a black sheep for having that self awareness has left me in disbelief numerous times. The movie Idiocracy explains it perfectly.

So accurate and we'll said. I absolutely agree with you and the other commenters too. It is absolutely the ego and the way it makes people believe they are always right that is the number 1 problem, or quite possibly the only problem or the basis for all problems within humanity.

@JoJo Skye You hit the nail on the head! There is so many things that an everyday average Joe or Jane believes what they self taught or what they've been taught by like minded people is correct. Because of this they become stubborn and close minded on topics and refuse to learn the facts about those particular topics. Sometimes even the most intelligent people can become close minded.

Thus they rather resort to stuff like Flat Earth where they feel like they have meaning (maybe even superiority because you can frame someone else dumb for being gullible since you figured out a secret) even thought it does not take a lot of effort. edit: Thus you need a reason to overcome your self-blinding ignorance and face the fears and uncertainties that might come with that.

In my big home city, everyone knows everyone by name. One time we had a guy robbing a pizza store near the hood. The guy who was wearing a mask, approached the checkout with a pistol. The store owner immediately recognised the thief, because of his short height. While the robber looked elsewhere for a second, he pulled out a shotgun, and shot a warning shot. The robber quickly ran out the door with the client the owner just served a minute ago. The manager decided to follow them outside only to see both of them entering and driving away with a brown coupé. Crazy shit happening here in Los Santos. The story is old though. Happened like 17 years ago.

The fun part of it all is how she can sometimes get half the facts wrong + miss out on some important bits of information but you can't step in, because she gets insanely defensive to the point of offensive. She will vehemently (and I don't use that word lightly) press what skewed facts she knows onto you like they're written in stone. Few years ago I asked her what the dunning kruger effect was, she actually said "no" and I dismissively said "oh, nvm". I doubt she ever got the hint, much less looked into it.

Sometimes we rely on other people's acknowledgment and validation, and it's not always a bad thing. Sometimes, when multiple people rate, compliment, or insult you based on your qualification/capacity, the majority of them are most likely right. It depends on multiple factors, but the majority of the same opinion when presented truthfully, without shade and/or attitude, that'll be worth taking into consideration. If it's your closest social circle, it's argued to be more or less truthful based on relations, but overall think about it.

The more you learn, the more you realize how little you know. That is why humility is so important, it's there to balance out the ego. Without the humility that comes with self-reflection, there is little or no wisdom. Without wisdom (the ability to reason), intelligence is little more than memory.

READ IF INTERESTED: Intelligence is a thing people seem to get confused about. Often when you think of an intelligent person, you think of someone who is well educated and who is successful. However that’s not always the case at all. There is a difference between being book smart, and being intuitively and or logically intelligent. Just because someone is better at math per se than someone who isn’t, doesn’t mean they are smarter than the other person. Many variables come to play but being put simply intelligence is not defined by how well educated you are. One person may be better at math, however the other person may be better at putting puzzles together. People’s brains work different from one another so the psychological mind set differs for each person. Not all stupid people think they aren’t stupid, just like not all smart people think they are smart. Part of it has to do with ignorance and of course self motivation and self esteem.

Intelligence quotient is a measure of capability , much like a measure of how much liquid a bucket can hold. If you only ever put a cup full in then having a huge bucket is pointless. If your IQ is very low then your bucket is small, you are never going to be able to fit in more than it can hold, regardless of how hard you try. Unfortunately the modern education system is still very much tied to the industrial revolution and often fills the otherwise large buckets with rocks, leaving little space for what is useful to know in life.

Intelligence is measured by one's capability to absorb and understand new concepts and ideas. Being inherently intuitive is a measure of wisdom. Today we live in a society wherein the vast majority lack wisdom, and are thus too arrogant or ignorant to improve their individual knowledge; which cripples their intelligence.

Now I came to the conclusion that I probably am both intelligent and yet able to do hilariously stupid things. One thing about the Dunning-Kruger-Effect: If I understood it correctly it does mean that incompetent people tend to greatly overvalue their own ability but not in return that all people who think highly of their ability are actually stupid.

"One person may be better at math, however the other person may be better at putting puzzles together." While this is not wrong, the implications of it surely are. Fact of the matter is, if you perform well in one category of measurement you are very likely to also perform well in any other. Still, you are correct, intelligence and knowledge aren't the same thing, in fact, intelligence is pretty well described by the time you need to acquire knowledge, your learning speed.

Where I live there is no need to have air-con in your homes, since we have only a month of summer anyhow. The thermostat is used only for heating purposes, since we it is cold most of the time. On a lovely super hot summers day, my flatmate tried to lower the temperature of the apartment by lowering the thermostat. After being frustrated for a half a day that the lowering temperature did not work, my flatmate asked rest of us if we could fix it. We failed to explain that heater is only for heating and that we need to have air-con for cooling, even after pointing out the label on thermostat says "Heating only". My flatmate did not think we are making match seance, so she decided to call the our landlord. After landlord not giving sufficient reasoning, flatmate took meter in own hands, by calling the support center for the heating unit. Well after all that didn't work out, the conclusion was clear: Everything in this household is broken!

  • @yosefmacgruber1920

    @yosefmacgruber1920

    6 жыл бұрын

How are some people so uneducated, that they do not realize what exactly a thermostat is? It is merely an automatic switch that is activated by the room's temperature. It can merely send a "call for heat" to the heating system. If that system is not equipped to provide for cooling, then there is no way for a thermostat to cool that living or business space. When it is too warm, the thermostat simply refrains from sending any call for heat. So the heating system simply does not heat. That is all that it can do. It can not prevent the heat from outside, from intruding, without any cooling side to the system. In that case, do what people did before air conditioning. Open the windows and plug in a fan. Or spend some money on some sort of air conditioner. The mini-split systems are popular in many countries, since they usually provide heat also, and they are well suited for old buildings that were never designed for air conditioning. Only a small hole is needed in the wall - just a few inches wide, for the refrigeration pipes and condensate drain, and the control and electrical wires, so as to connect the quiet fan inside unit(s), and the outside unit. No ductwork is needed, so that 30% of the conditioned air need not be wasted or lost to the ductwork. Back when I rented an apartment, the landlord did not provide any air conditioning. I had my own window air conditioner that I used. Thus, when the landlord started renting also window air conditioners, I had no need for one, as I already owned my air conditioner.
