Why Do So Many Canadians Die on the Job?

Canada's rate of workplace fatalities is among the worst in the developed world. More workers die in Alberta alone every year than the entire UK. Why is Canada's safety record so poor? Why haven't we learned from tragedy after tragedy? Where's the accountability? How do we turn this trend around?
2:55 | Nicole Gnazdowsky's brother Andrew was killed at a Nova Scotia power dam site where he was working as an engineer. Julie Hamilton's son Tim died when a party tent he was erecting hit a power line. They join behavioural scientist Rob Stewart to expose Canada's atrocious safety record, and propose a way forward.

Here in New Brunswick, the government held a safety training course for managers at a small hotel. On that very day of that course, the roof was being done and none of the roofers were tied. The government trainers said they were just trainers, they didn't do enforcement. And nothing was done. There is a recycling facility in Saint John where EXPLOSIONS are common. The billionaire who owns it, said 'well, your going to have explosions'. Then last year a worker there was actually killed. FINALLY they are starting to talk about shutting it down.

Complacent Supervisors who pass the responsibility onto the employees because they signed the company's safety program. They wipe their hands at that point and push push push and put fear of losing their jobs in the employees who were not trained properly or were but cutt corners in favor of productivity.

It's very simple: neither managers, nor supervisors, nor workers care. They want to do what they want to do when they want to do it and there is zero enforcement at any level. Production is the only thing that matters.

Pencil whipped safety programs! When the surpervision has this nonchalant attitude towards safety, the workers adopt the same mentality towards the safety procedures, which creates more profit. This creates negative insentives, bonuses are awarded to the cost savings.

What industry are you in, or are you just an armchair quarterback. What's a pencil whip safety program?

I think it has to do with the increasingly bleak future outlook for Canadians. When you lose hope, you don't care too much. It's all Turdeau 's fault.

Sudden deaths since experimental injection rolled out 'to keep' the jobs doesn't help things either.

Maybe I'm missing something but how is it the companies fault if the guy goes into the water of his own free will?? That engineer in charge of the kid should be criminally charged though!!
