So Jonathan answered Saul, «David earnestly asked permission of me to go to Bethlehem. And he said, «Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. And now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me get away and see my brothers.́ Therefore he has not come to the kinǵs table.» (1Sam.20:28-29)

With all of the due respect for the priest... but... assertion that Serbians were pagans before St. Sava is simply not true. Archeological evidences show that Serbian king back in 9th century was a Christian king as his royal seal in the middle clearly has Orthodox Cross depicted. Search for the phrase "Golden seal of prince Strojimir" and witness it yourself. St. Sava was the one who affirmed Orthodoxy in Serbian nation as they were under the influence and pressure of the Latin heretics who were trying to Latinize them. He was the one who removed all dilemmas and sealed the course of the brothers and sisters Orthodox Serbs.

with all due respect, the state religion may have been Christianity, but the Serbian peasantry widely practiced pagan beliefs alongside Christian ones or were altogether still pagans, Saint Sava and the institution of the Slava helped ease the Serbian Peasantry from hero cult worship (popular in Serbia, which was once a roman land holding and Rome and Greece for that matter) which was widely prevalent in the area towards Christian beliefs. So, Father of course is not incorrect at all Thank You. - A Serbian

and the reason why it passes to the male line is because the man is seen as the priest of the family and thus it's his duty to Shepard his family towards Christ and keep himself holy through the intersession of the family's patron saint thus delivering the family to the Bosom of the Lord, and in respect the Serbian People are then all brought one by one to the Bosom of the Lord.
