Why Do People Gossip About You

To gossip means to talk about someone who isn’t there. So, why do we gossip? Is all gossip malicious in its intent? And for some of us, why does it seem so enjoyable sometimes? What do we get out of it and what is there to gain? In this video, we'll be talking about why we gossip and the psychology behind it!
Disclaimer: We’d like to mention that this video is for educational purposes only. It’s created to help us understand why we do the things we do and is not meant to justify, glorify or to condone gossiping. This act can be harmful and negatively impact someone’s mental and emotional well-being.

True. When they come to their senses and drop the senseless rumours they might try and subtly-worm their way back into your good books but by then it’s usually too-late. Gossip about someone you know you shouldn’t be talking about and the damage is done if it gets back to the gossipee. It doesn’t matter how “sorry” you feel afterwards. It’s too late.

Gossip is one of the reasons I’m not one to socialise an enormous deal. It’s not always bad as such but I just tire of people who talk about the ins-and-outs of random people (sometimes to the point of spreading damaging and erroneous rumours) as if there aren’t ideas and just other things to do with life to discuss. It’s like some people live and breathe what other people are apparently saying and doing and it’s just boring if not particularly obnoxious. In respectful moderation it’s fair enough but people who only talk about other people’s lives I just find shallow at the best of times. I can’t have someone like that as a proper friend.

People are always going to tear people they don’t like to shreds behind closed doors (I do and I’ll readily admit that) but if you’re wise it stays behind closed doors. There are certain things that the wider public just don’t need to know about, especially when you yourself don’t really actually know the ‘gossipee’ that well.

I always found gossip can be destructive even when it's done with the best intentions. You could be talking about someone in the most positive light but eventually it spreads and someone most likely will misinterpret and put a negative spin on it. Then worse case scenario the negative information gets back to the person that was the object of the gossip and they find out it was you it was originated from, now you have broken trust to deal with. Open honest communication with the person that is the subject of the information is best way go before it gets to someone else.

There are going to be a few/many things that a person you both people are talking about you will find pretty wrong or problematic for you. But talking in a philosophical way, focusing on the positive of any situation, object and person will help you move forward with optimism. When you gossip or talk... Just keep a balance of what you're talking about. If there is positive, put forward. If there isn't don't make it a secret conspiracy to spread hatred for that person - consider the negative and let go of the topic.

Yet she got information out of them and used it's against them, she would act like everyone's friends and would seem trustworthy. Even I have fallen for her trickery and boy did it backfire.I always wondered why she acted this way, I figured it was just because she wanted to seem like the person to go to for the daily news. Now I have a better understanding of why she acted this way.

Interesting. In schools manual policy about spreading gossip and rumors are prohibited. It leads to misunderstanding. False information for attention and you are right about small towns. A old friend of mine complained when, she lived little town in Georgia. I don’t know what town? And, she says gossip happened in grocery store, church, beauty shop, Walmart, you name it after her divorce she moved to Richmond, VA and didn’t hear a peep there.

I have defiantly gossiped to vent my frustrations. The one subject to this gossip is someone who I have never seen nor meet, so I can only imagine who they are by their hideous actions (not just towards me, but towards others who were at the same event that night.) He has caused great grief and anger within me and what could only be imagined as indescribable pain within others. Talking about the event and how horrible that guy was with my friends who were there is sometimes a way for me to let off steam... (and believe me, I would hold the guy accountable if I could...)

Currently dealing with middle school gossips :,) (8th grade) Heard them talking about me the other day… made me feel like shit. I couldn’t hear exactly what they were saying about me but it was along the lines of how “weird” and quiet I am, and were talking about something I apparently did that was “weird” to them. I, thankfully, no longer feel too bad about it, but it still bothers me that people are talking about me behind my back in general. Now that I think about it, people were gossiping about me for a while, but I’ve always turned a blind eye subconsciously. Not one for confrontation. I believe if I ignore it they’ll have no power over me and will get bored.

Cause they're bad people! I think it's best to ignore them and also tell an adult, cause if you take action nothing you can do will stop them, and if you tell a teacher they'll know what's going on (although they may not be able to help they'll understand what those people are doing and what you're going through)

Why are there no positive connotations involved in the video. Nothing in the definition states that gossip is inherently negative; only that it's sharing personal information about somebody other than yourself. Which isn't necessarily negative. For instance, gossip can be about someone's accomplishments. Not knowing and speaking on or knowing and divulging someone's deepest darkest secrets are two sides of the same coin. That being said, I enjoyed this video very much. Informative, entertaining, and best of all, beautifully narrated. I would have liked to see the 'tails' side of said coin. Now, with all that said and out of the way... if I've misspoke or had incorrect Information I apologize. I've been awake for 5 days and honestly didn't research anything. It was just a curiosity of mine and I am in no way hating on anything. Than you for your video, the time and effort spent has not gone unnoticed. Be safe and have a wonderful day!!! Cant wait for the next one :)

Well...there is another reason why it can happen, which isn't talked about in this video. It might just be me but: To get a different perspective on things. I wasn't specifically speaking poorly about the person but rather of a person's behavior and words. I was in cruel need of advice on how to approach the situation in the best way, and I outlined how it frustrated me and where I wanted it to go. It kind of frustrates me to have people validate my emotions when I am more in need of solutions to help both people in that situation. I understand how nice it can be sometimes (for example on personal achievements), but it makes me feel dismissed when I can't seem to see a way out, ask someone because I am aware of previous experiences, or they have been of good advice in the past, and to receive that sort of approach.

One point that wasn't discussed. Gossip sometimes is an effective coping strategy when u are in a family unit/dynamic that has been touched by addiction, or trauma. Many times people struggling with addiction or spinning their tires from trauma tend to lack self awareness, and the respect for people round them b/c they're struggling & are often too blinded by their own problems. .... This puts a ton of stress & anxiety on the people around them. Gossiping sometimes provides an outlet where two or more people can discuss behaviours that need correcting. .... Gossip is usually looked at through a superficial lens which then denies that we are social beings & we require communication, and sometimes learning to cope with difficult situations comes from sharing our own personal experiences. This is the reason group therapy is often so useful. Ie. Addiction support grps, Victims of violence/ murder support grps etc.
