    It’s a quirk of law, if the companies don’t defend their trademarks/copyrights, there’s the potential for them to lose them entirely, which is something that they want to avoid

    Disney was actually fine with letting club penguin servers run. It was until a massive uproar happened after one of the owners of a pretty big revival, club penguin online, was a child predator. It was a massive scandal that kinda tarnished disney's name and they didn't wanna risk that sorta thing again.

    @@ant2551 That and other revivals *loved* putting ads on the site, thus monetizing the game. Monetization never works in a fan server's favor. They actually seem ok with charity oriented stuff tho, such as Toontown: Corporate Clash's Duck Shuffler plush that raised 18 or 19k for CMNH.

    @@GamerBoy-fe4fpno it’s actually kinda true in a way. There are layers who’s entire job is to find a way to pull lawsuits on as many things as possible in favour of the company they work for. As long as it looks like they’ll get a good chunk of money for it (like one of the club penguin revivals being shut down and the server owners being sued for a ton of money), or if there’s somthing that may cause a negative perception of their company, (another club penguin revival had been shut down due to the owners being involved in the distribution of child pornography)

    The reason is to protect their IP, for future releases of any kind. Otherwise they risk genericization (their thing becomes generic). If that happens, they basically loose their IP.

    The reason is most likely copyright/trademark laws. If you own the rights to something like "The Box" and someone makes something called "The Box: Revival" then you have to say "I own the brand you're using, please stop" cause if you don't then you lose ownership of it because you refused or were unable to defend it. It's a fucking weird set of laws.

    As with so many Copyright problems, the problem isn't if the fan work is truly legal, it's that huge companies can bury fans in legal expenses they can't afford even if it should be permitted. It's an enormous problem stretching far beyond fangames.

Companies don't want people to make money off of their IP, Disney had an earlier game called Toontown and you can still find Toontown rewritten and club penguin rewritten online, they're only allowed to have these fanmade servers because they don't make any money off of it, it's purely ran as a passion project

    No, that's a lie. There is no obligation to sue for copyright. Trademark has this, but it only covers the actual name of the product and only in very specific circumstances. Even if you triggered those circumstances, you'd still be liable for copyright infringement, so you'd only be able to use that name with a *completely different game*

    This is why i greatly apriciate a certurn project that relesed all of its assets to the public domain after the creators got the final decision to discontinue it. They didnt have to do it, but they did, and now fans will always have the possibility of reviving the project

    That one really pissed me off too. It's one thing for a company to cease and desist a private server when there's a legitimate chance of an official relaunch of the game, but there's not a ghost of a chance that we'll ever see an Imagine relaunch. When you look at the way Sega overall treats fan games, it really came as a shock as well. I'm not sure if we'll ever know if that was a case of Atlus themselves wanting it gone or Sega forcing their hand though.

    They shut it down if i remember due to all the allegations like kiddy videos and etc some really dark shit. Cant blame them for putting a stop to that. Plus some other ppl made another club penguin that does not have that rep

    It depends on the game and the company, When Warhammer online went down a group of people wanted to make a private server and they asked the company who owned it if they could. The Company responded by giving them all of the dev tools necessary to make their own server and to add new content, saying that they are free to run a server but they can never charge people for it.

    It usually costs money to run servers, most companies don't think about the fact they can sell the servers to make more money, but oh well

They aren't going to make any money so just let us play the amazing game they made. Many times fans have tried to re-engineer the games, and the project always gets shut down by the company, regardless of the fact that they aren't losing anything if we play that.

    The reason they shut hen down is because the amount of money they generate from sales no longer is enough to pay for the cost of the servers used to run it, therefore they lose money

    Shutting the MMO’s down isn’t the problem. Shutting fan made continuations down is the problem. The only reason I can think of companies do this is so people buy their other products.

    Theres an mmo that actually doesnt rely on servers because it had an offline mode, but its private servers have been up for nearly 2 decades now without issue (PSO)

    This happened 2-3 times to FusionFall... However, when FF: Retro/Legacy got shut down, a new group revived it as "Retrobution." Being a revive of a revive, CN probably realized another cease order wasn't worth the effort. I think someone is/was also making a FusionFall Minecraft server (IDK its status). Another project is also under development to modernize and improve the game as "Saturday Morning Invasion"

    I actually play Retrobution regularly now and asked people about why CN hasn't destroyed them yet. If I remember, they said that there was a legal case that happened against Fusionfall projects and CN. The case stated that anyone can run servers now regardless of size, and if you do not monetize Fusionfall, it is free reign. Currently, OpenFusion and Retrobution are fan projects that are alive and kicking and I'm sure that there are more out there!

    The reason is because fan controlled servers are a wild west of criminal activity that paints a negative light on the original creators/owners. Disney shut down Club Penguin fan servers because of a massive issue of P3do moderators contacting ch1ld users for unsavory reasons.

    Darkflame Universe? Yeah, you can play right now solo or with friends, you just need to either have advanced computer skills or be able to follow instructions very carefully when setting up a server

    Nah. I would rather a traditional rpg with multiplayer support. I think an mmo is completely connected to boring repetitive quests and griefing. I dislike the grinding in mmos and would rather something like Elden ring set in the one piece world. Honestly it could be a series of games that traverse the arcs that let your save continue over the games

    Club penguin shutting down was possibly the biggest disaster in the 2010s. Disney literally just came and destroyed everything, used the corpse of club penguin and dressed it up and danced it around, and left after putting the body in a vault of acid.

    LEGO actually as publicly stated that their fine with people hosting private servers of the LEGO Universe rebuild. The large, public server was the only thing that they asked to have shut down. Moving forward, anyone can download LU and play it or even host their own server for some friends.

    I was obsessed with LEGO Universe for the longest time I wanted it so much but my parents wouldn't allow me until finally me and my brother's got it and it shut down a few months later. I remember some ads and classes like the Pirates being able to find treasure in the game.

    Nintendo has copyrights to worry about. If they let too much slide for fans, they can effectively lose their copyrights and trademarks for those franchises, letting other big and scummy companies steal it.

    @@Kahadi Other companies have let fans create fan projects to show their love for these series or politely request they shut down their projects. SEGA, Valva, capcom, Even Gamefreak has let numerous pokemon Rom hacks go up. But Nintendo shuts down everything, even an HD overhaul for a game they don’t make money off of. Meanwhile Resident Evil 4 has gotten an HD ultra project uploaded to steam and Capcom pinned that fan projects on their community page to show THEY were excited for it too.

    This happened to a game called FusionFall that was made by Cartoon Network. I miss that game so much. There was a team that tried to remake it and do an updated form called FF Retro. Got hit by a cease and desist and now that's completely gone. In both iterations it was completely free and literally no money was made or lost. They just decided to hate their old fans

    Club Penguin specifically made sense, because once the official servers shut down, a lot of the fan hosted servers had problems with predatory behaviour towards kids, and a lack of proper moderation, and for a company like Disney, that could be a very huge potential problem for brand recognition.
