Why Do Minimalist Wear The Same Thing Every Day?

When I first discovered minimalism, I noticed something weird, right off the bat. Just about every minimalist wears the same thing every day, but why?
Now at first I was confused and didn’t really understand why this was a reoccurring theme everywhere I looked. It was almost as if black was an unwritten rule that one must follow in order to be a "real" minimalist.
So I kept digging and here are a few theories that I’ve come across and have grown to understand personally.

I only own band shirts of my favourite metal bands. They are all folded in a way that the print isn't visible. So every morning I grab a "black" shirt and no matter what print I get I am happy because I love all of them. This way I do not have to decide which one I want to wear that day.

My "uniform" is a dress with leggings. I have 7 dresses and I go to the office 3 times a week. So I rotate and don't have to wear the same one again for a couple of weeks. Makes laundry so easy. I only have to wash my work clothes about once a month! My dresses are colorful, fun prints. For other days, jeans with a black or gray t-shirt and I add cardigans for winter months. I've been doing this for a couple of years and I love it. So easy!

Having a decluttered wardrobe and an “outfit formula” has been suuuper helpful and it’s surprising how much easier my mornings are. I also pick out my outfit the night before (might seem childish) but it is SO nice to not have that little decision to make right out of bed. 10/10

The simple reason I wear black is because I'm messy. If I wear a white shirt, sometime in the day I will inevitably get a stain on it. I will have to take extra time to deal with that stain whereas black doesn't show stains as much.

I think many people have informal 'uniforms' for different occasions. I have work 'uniforms' - a few outfits I rotate that are suitable for work, that I don't tend to wear on days off. I have a gardening 'uniform' and a groundwork 'uniform'. Beyond that, though, it all gets a bit messy! Time to get more intentional. 😊

My minimalist wardrobe has been greatly inspired by the content from A Small Wardrobe here on KZread - definitely a great one for women. Using color analysis to determine the best & yet simple color palette to wear and then curating your outfits from there has meant that I still feel like I have some variety and self expression. I also love Courtney Carvers Project 333 to adjust to owning much less apparel. But the content on the A Small Wardrobe channel has been the ultimate. And I’ve almost entirely removed everything that is white, black, or grey from my wardrobe. They’re the wrong colors for me anyway!

Honestly Ronald the first part of the video is something I just didn’t expect, taking time to dress is maybe understandable but to stand their for literal hours is just too much and not worth the time one thing that makes me glad that you embraced minimalism For me I wear the local Arab dress everywhere while at work or on college campus and it gives me a peace of mind as to why I don’t need to buy new clothes so often 👍🏻

Hey Ronald. I think it is a bit harder for women, in my opinion we are bombarded by the fashion industry really hard. silver lining: it is possible. It took me ages but I have found my uniform, one I love and feel good into and makes me feel great. I think, relating to what you said, breaking that barrier of "what will they think of me (in the office)" is the first step. Then it's all easy :-). Thanks for your videos, I love them!!!

I feel called out. I do wear most of the time the same things. two main jeans, and three color of shirt (black, grey and white, but mostly black) why ? because like you said it's easier to pick an outfit, and why black ? because if easier to clean/become less dirty. white can be tricky and any stain can be seen faster, you have to be more careful with white. And sweat can be seen with grey, so I pick mostly black but sometime I don't want to wear a black shirt so I have a few option. I have a few extra shirt with different cut that I wear sometimes, and where I bring color will be in dress shirt or accessories. Having mostly the same outfit with just a few variance allow for easier and faster laundry (from washing to folding and putting it back in the drawer), there is a sense of safety, comfort (both physically and mentally), gain of time. Simply put, it make life easier on nearly all level. and I agree, nobody ever said something about my clothes being the same.

AWESOME videography!! It was like a cool commercial for those tees! Before I started on a minimalist journey I began wearing black: it goes with everything, I liked how I looked in it, the things I had were comfortable and my mom had just passed away. I am now wearing greys and whites and army green which has been my favorite for the past 30+ years! Since I am not very minimalistic, I ask myself and remind myself in the morning: "What do I feel good and comfortable in?" This helps me not overdress or underdress and I always wear my favorites!

I just discovered your videos and have enjoyed each one I’ve seen so far. I personally love wearing all black or a mix of dark colors (black, navy or grey). All my office clothes (when I worked in an office) are black. Most of my work-from-home clothes are black. I’m a long way from my minimalist goals but this helps me not feel so self-conscious (oddly) about my wardrobe choices! No one cares what I wear except me. Good thing to remember.

Dope shirt changing edit!! I watched it at 0.25 playback speed and used the comma ( , ) and period ( . ) keys and you were hella crispy on those edits. Teach me how to do that. Yo, the cost of those shirts are a bit pricey. Any alternative where you can get a pack of like 4 shirts or more for like $50? I like all black.

Ive found that most poeple don't care about us as much as we think they do. Its something I have to remind myself of constantly.

Love the video. Short but full of info. I do not know why many minimalists do long videos. 1🤔

Personally I prefer a white tee to black levis, or a simple&colored tee, over a black one. But yes, keep it simple! I love how little time is spent in the mornings now that I have one pair of my fave jeans that I practically wear every single day, with a few exceptions.

Ronald, I've learned a lot from your videos. Keep up the help for future minimalists. My de-cluttering is going very s-l-o-w-l-y. But, I hope to get where I want to be soon. It's so hard for me. Inattentive ADHD is a big reason.....disorganized & distracted & repurchase things I can't find....it's easier, but adds to the clutter. Who needs 15 pairs of scissors? 6 staplers? etc. I need to get rid of tons of clothes (that fit & don't fit), so, my current problem is: I am a retired Baby Boomer female & I live in Wisconsin. (I like being out in nature all year round) Summers are hot & humid, but every day is different.....60s one day & 90s the next. Winters are very C-O-L-D..... Any advice on wardrobes for major seasonal differences? (I own only black jeans. Tops are my problem) (In the winter, I keep house temps around 65 degrees....$$$....so summer tee shirts aren't warm enough) FYI: I make & love to wear unique statement jewelry. This needs to be incorporated into my wardrobe. First time commenting & new subscriber.....You are truly an inspiration! Karen

I used the 333 project to figure out what I like. My go to are grey t-shirts that i have that express my love for chickens or have a funny saying about chickens. I have a full flock of chickens at home and talking about them and spending time with them are one of my favorite things to do. Occasionally i like wearing pink and I have a couple colored dresses but grey is my go to color.

I totally agree with the uniform or black tops. In fact I love to wear my black tops, but sometimes I alternate with some beige or blush pink that are my other passions☺️ My minimalist wardrobe and those few colors in that make my life much easier😃
