Looking at doing something like this off my boat instead of risking a $1000 drone going into saltwater. SJcam 4000 in it's waterproof case but no gimbal.

Panoramas are tough, but if you take enough shots from the same place some will stich properly. I've done KAP for 2-3 years and am much happier with my drones. If you want to do cinema photography the only choice is drones. Your restricted to perhaps some great photo's with KAP but little choice in planning and videos don't normally work well with KAP.

In many places kites are not allowed . Are their rules regarding the FAA and flying over NY?

What type of kite is that please?

This makes no sense at all. A kite is unpredictable with wind conditions. You can't carry a nice camera. You can't get any moving shot. You can't get any high altitude shot. You will have a permanent string in the way of one of your shots. There are so many reasons why this is a silly old idea 😂

Adam Facey I don' t agree. Wind is often stable, especially 50-100 m over ground. I never lost my camera (you can fly with very heavy / too heavy for drone/ camera all the day /drone max 15 minutes/; no vibrations). I fly to altitude 1000 m (3000 feet) so I can get high altitude shot very easy. A kite is very simply , safe and reliable. This is a significant advantage. Each drone (sooner or later) breaks down. It's very danger.

Adam Facey ... not sure I agree - but expect more of us backs to the wall personal drone users to change over to kites............ we'll make it work

Actually it makes perfect sense. Kites can indeed carry nice cameras - like the one in this video. Most affordable drones (including $1000 models) are only powerful enough to carry very small cameras with tiny sensors so photo quality will be compromised. On the other hand, a large kite in good wind can lift significantly heavier weight - like bigger cameras with larger sensors for better image quality. I'm not sure what you mean by moving shot but if you're referring to video, you can add a gimbal for stabilisation. And it's easy to take high altitude shots - just take the kite to several hundred feet with a long line. And it's easy to avoid the line in your shots - simply tilt the camera lens away from the line.
