    I actually thought of being a hikokomori in the future when i'm done with school and only go out to work because i am so tired of people around me, the events that are happening and wish i can just focus on my self but because of this stress and depression i got admitted into the hospital and not able to go out for 3-4 months and it was definitely suffocating and irritating to stay at one place and seeing the same things every day. now that i'm better, i try to reconnect with the world and the people around me

    I've been a hikikomori in America for almost 10 years now. I would only leave my room to use the bathroom and get food from the kitchen. Sometimes I would see a psychologist which was extremely difficult for me. I only felt safe in my room. With therapy and a lot of medications, I've slowly been getting better. I now ride my bike at least twice a week to get to appointments and I don't fear the outside world as much. I'm getting there, but I still spend almost all my time in my room. For me, I think this happened because I didn't have any drive or motivation to be apart of society. I dropped out of school at 16 and had no desire to get a job or go to college. That's how it all started. Once I got comfortable in my room, it became nearly impossible for me to leave.

    Glad you're slowly pulling back into the outside world, it definitely is hard to pull out of especially a long time of absence such as 10 years; humans are naturally accustomed to sticking to where they are comfortable even if it has adverse effects, so I'd like to tell you that it is very strong of you to have taken such big steps.

    Those guys are so lucky to have had family or friends who cared enough to drag them back into the world. When I went hikky for a few years, most of the close people in my life simply went away, so returning to society took a major mental health breakdown and almost getting sectioned. Something that's rarely talked about in Western countries regarding hikky/NEET or some other kind of commonly despised "leech on society" is that the problem is not one of employment, education, "laziness", or "entitlement". It is a mental health problem! As long as we treat mental health problems as taboo, as less important than physical ones, the problem will persist.

    In the US mental health issues are overly treated by big pharmacy companies looking to profit. I actually have Major Depression Disorder, it is a neurological disorder I was born with closely related to bipolarism. There is also schizophrenia in my family. It is very rare. Not the same as onset depression, which is caused by external events. But, everybody with onset depression is given the same medication as I am here in the US, when they really need therapy. It would be like giving everybody who lost their breath once an inhaler for asthma.

    @@Mondscheinstaub I heard from a Caucasian Woman had been lived in Japan, and she is shocked when she found out Japan treat mental illness as an excuse or jokes because Japanese tend to stigmatize mental illness as disease that only Westeners suffers, but Japanese think they are genetically superior and does not suffer the same condition like Westeners. She even said mental illness are often passess in Japan as something "normal". I think any foreigners should stop saying something "unique" to Japan is actually "someone who can't fit in Japanese society". She knows live in Korea eventhough there is similiar stigma, yet the treatment are better. Japan care so much about reputation, so that's why they deny the act of racism too.

Some people are born with diseases, weird voices, faces, conditions, etc. As a human looking on the outside, we are always very quick to judge. In reality, those are the kind of person who need help the most. Everyone deserves love and a chance for success, no matter who they are.

    I don't think it's more depressing than western countries. If anything, they seem to be a bit oblivious to some events in the US and Europe, which doesn't really hurt them, if you consider the issues of terrorism, return of fascist ideals, etc. The thing is, Japanese society isn't very open about things which we've mostly come to terms with in the West, like same-sex marriage, mental illness, recreational drug use... And yet, somehow, they find a way to lock themselves up and not be thrown out by their parents or stay unemployed forever.

    I go to India a lot, and of all the countries I have been to, it is one of the least depressing. When Indian men come alone to the west, they often get very depressed and homesick, because they are so used to having lots of very close personal relationships with friends and family. People in the west are more aloof, so it is hard for them to take.

What sets hikikomoris apart is that they do it for an extended period of time and they don't leave their house at all. According to the wikipedia definition the extended period is "more than 6 months". Have you locked yourself in your house for the last 6 months and didn't go out?

I think it might be because of bulling in the school, and never having a real friends. How could I show myself to other normal people? I'm trying to learn programming now, but now my body start to fail me too. So, I guess it is too late. I see no hope. No future. So people, dont think only Japan has this issues. Society really sux. And yes people here are very warm, friendly and enthusiastic but tbh that doesn't change anything if you don't go out of your house and interact with others. There are many reasons to hate this society and not wanting to be a part of it.. I think there's even more in latino america than europe or 1st world countries.

    I played World of Warcraft from launch continuously for 10 years... I knew my guildmates, whom I had never met IRL, better than some of my family. Most of them eventually left the game, and the new people were less social. I ended up going outside and taking a walk through an area by my house that was previously empty fields but had be turned into a park with fountains and exercise paths and it was so amazing; I mean I didn't even know it had been done. I felt like if I missed this, right here near where I lived, who knows what else I missed. Some of those are things I will never have a chance to experience again, possibly. Really shook me down to my core. My brothers came by, and took me out for beer and pizza at a new pub. I didn't know people missed me. I don't regret my MMO years, I just wish they weren't my entire life, exclusively, for that time.

    As an American, I struggled with this for a few years. I had no hope. Did not go into college because I thought it was just a debt collecting monopoly. I saw only the negatives in life. Delved deep into conspiracy. I had a sort of "girlfriend" (complicated) during this time for about 7 years and had lost most of my friends through isolation. In high school I also had an prescription drug problem, from having kidney stones for 3 years. (Hydroz and oxyz at age 15.) I was also prone to addiction. Also my mental instability and a lack of trust of others from wounds of past experiences. (Lack of a father figure in my life.) Also it was hard times in high school for my family, financial instability, lack of love and affection. What saved me was family, friends, my eventual breakup from my ex-girlfriend and my eventual regaining of HOPE years later. Now at 24, I seldom stay indoors for I work from home, but Ill have to do things. Living alone, you need to be doing things like go out and buy groceries, run errends, pay bills, so it keeps you busy. You can't just wallow for months without conversation, or else you'll be living on the streets. I am very lucky to be doing what I do, and my family helps me very much. It is a coin toss when working from home, but it gives me all the time I need to expand my hobbies. This situation of staying indoors for months is not only a Japanese phenominon. It happens all over the world. I even knew of a few people who were doing just that here in america. It's a sign of HOPELESSNESS. Finding purpose in life can do wonders. Exercising, meditation, and creation help. Making goals also does this as well. Micro dosing psychedelics can also help make you become more sociable and productive, which also helped me as well. I hope one day, we can be able to remedy this situation in the best possible way, and I believe psychedelics can pave the road to doing so. Also, a society understanding of this horrible hopelessness depraving kids of their youth. It's a mental illness, and psychedelics are the medication of the mind. Take care and much love.

  • @Yoarashi

    @Yoarashi

    I agree with your post otherwise - hopelessness is the problem at the core of this type of reclusiveness, and finding meaning in life and balance in one's mental health is the key to overcoming it. BUT, please do not advise people to use psychedelics as a treatment for mental health problems! This is dangerous, risky advice. I am genuinely glad they have worked for you, but this is very Russian roulette-esque advice to give to people with mental illnesses, who are already at higher risk for dependency as well as adverse reactions. Unaddressed mental health problems can, and often will, blow into full-on psychosis through psychedelics.

    RexXflash I took a few classes in community college. Decided not to go that route. Pursued personal interests instead of the norm. After high school, understood that I did not feel ready for another 4 years of school. When I was a senior back in 2011, I found out college would rack up serious debt for myself. Opted not to go. Wandered aimlessly for a year, found myself, lost myself, found myself, lost mysrlf again, then found myself again, and now I'm here. Did a lot of searching for understanding and truth. Took an odd number of jobs during those times. (Sushi Chef, worked at a Medical Cannabis Clinic, and scored the home company gig.) What I have been is, kids that go to a 4 year college, coming out, to find that they are working 9-5 jobs monday - friday unfulfilled paying off student loans. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, because a degree usually guarantees a job + a higher wage. I just couldn't see myself working in an office job, let alone go to school. Let alone a 9 - 5, a schedule I couldn't choose for myself. There however, is a good amount of people who actually pursue their career of choice right after college, from positive influences in their lives. I did not have that luxury. But I can honestly say, I am in the best position I could be in with the cards I was dealt. I did not have a father figure growing up. I don't regret my choice. But both choices have pros and cons. This choice was the best for myself.

    It's easy to understand why there's hikikomori phenomenon in Japan. First consider these points:- 1. Japanese people are very kind. 2. From childhood, they are taught to be nice and courteous to others/ 3. They are taught to keep society above themselves and always help others. Now, what triggers hikikomori for a person? 1. Distrust caused by a certain incident, probably involving betrayal, bullying, poverty, failure in life etc... 2. Lack of bond among family members. When parents don't have time for their kids 3. When being a part of the society becomes too hectic for some. Because becoming a part of the society means you will have to give up the kindness in your heart and get ready to follow the law of the jungle. Some kindhearted people cannot accept such a bizarre paradigm shift and lock themselves in.

    I live in a way similar to a hikikomori, I only go out to the gym, or to any places alone all the time. Meaning, I do not socialize when I'm outside, I'm just doing my own stuff. the First reason could be triggers, but the main source is fear. But Honestly, once you overcome your fears, it doesn't mean you'll just socialize with people in society. For me, I just don't , there's no point in socializing. Humans kept calling themselves social animals, well, I disagree, you CAN live alone and live a healthy life. I can acually relate to the second reason, I only talk to my mom, and not much with my other family members. The third reason is nonsense. Being part of society, does not mean you have to follow the law of the jungle. I still go out ,I never follow the rule of the survival of the fittest. I will always care for the needs of others and help others,no matter what. Some may take advantage of me, so what?

    This isn't unique to Japan or Asia. I believe it's a normal reaction for self-preservation when an individual's circumstances become too stressful. When your job is somewhat or very immoral, when your employer demands an unsustainable amount of your time and attention, when people, in general, are selfish and shitty, and the media highlights how the most selfish and the most shitty are the most successful, when you lose a close relative, when you have a difficult health problem, or some combination of these, dropping out becomes the rational choice. A society needs to ask itself why large swaths of its citizens decide its simply best to no longer participate in the system that society has created.

    I knew of one during my long stays in Japan. Oddly enough, he was "hiding" in a share house which I still find even more strange since it's a social atmosphere. His room was right next to mine and knowing how paper thin the walls are in traditional homes, I eventually realized he was always in his room. The only communication he had was through a phone. He called whenever he needed money for food or to extend his time at the share house. I managed to bump into him twice though. Once, I was leaving to go to a club really late in the night, before the trains stopped running, and he was coming from the convenient store with bags of ramen cups. The second time was more "detrimental" for him since he was exiting the shower room ... naked ... mind you, I am female. He was so frightened and kept saying "すみません、すみません、すみません…" as he ran away. I wasn't freaked out. I was more shocked to see him for a second time, honestly. 😂

    The only people concerned about these young men are government (yeah not even society) because of absence of tax payers. And the interviewer does not touch the real cause of problem because she doesn't interview men who are still hikikomori and have no desire to change. What causes the phenomenon? These guys have great dreams like normal people. They want women, they want wealth, and they want to succeed. But reality shows to them that whatever they do, no matter how hard they try, they will not be rewarded. When they realize even trying is worthless, they stop trying. It's as simple as the loss of reward, unjustified cost of trying to succeed, and the resulting absence of motivation.

  • @saliver5909

    @saliver5909

    6 жыл бұрын

    Just to add a bit more. These men often resort to play video games, why? Because video games provide a consistent reward system. You level up, you become stronger. You do a quest, you get rewarded. And females in gaming are much easier to get than real women (doesn't need me to write anything about real women to know that). And establishing communication to discuss hikikomori openly WON'T help. Because that's not the core of problem. These young men are extremely practical, only setting up a good reward system can solve the problem. If they figure they can't get anything they want, they are not motivated to do anything.

College costs money, most jobs seem pointless, I couldn't get into the army that I was hoping to get into for years because of my vision. There's no where to go, I have no friends left so the warmest option is staying in my room gaming then sleeping. It's horrible.

    Fantastic job, Hiroko. Your interviews helped to penetrate the wall of silence and mystery around some of the people who withdraw from the world around them, due to fear or other factors. This phenomenon is happening around the world, although mostly in more-industrialized, more 'socialized' nations in which these people can apparently find other means of support (family, welfare, etc.) and don't have to work to sustain themselves. I hope this new awareness will help more people to understand and reach out to their own family and friends afllicted in this way.

    The Japanese word "Hikikomon" can be a close cousin of the American word "Hermit" Both share the relationship of isolation from the outside world. Having no interest in what going on within the world or people. This in some cases can be considered as a form of depression. Personally I am more of a home and stay to myself person, I don't feel the need or comfortable around a crowd of people. If I have food, computer, TV, books, music within my shelter. I could care less if I ever go out of the boundaries limit of my home. Is this normal? What may not be normal to the average person, just may be a normal behavior to a "Hikikomon" or a "Hermit" Who is to say that a person life who is a Hikikomon or Hermit is not normal. Or that those who are "not" a Hikikomon or Hermit life is normal? Do we really know the true meaning of living a normal life? Can we Judge?

  • @Gillsing

    @Gillsing

    6 жыл бұрын

    It might not be normal, but as long as you're fine with it, it's only a problem if it prevents you from sustaining your lifestyle. I live pretty much the same way myself, and was diagnosed with schizoid personality disorder when the employment service needed to justify their subsidizing my employment at a local company. And that diagnosis seems to fit quite well for me.

  • @peggyroyster3759

    @peggyroyster3759

    Gillsing That is why I raise the question what is normal? Do we really know? Just because someone say or categorize you as having a "Schizoid personality" do not make it so. That is only their own way of placing you in a box and saying that is what you are. Ask them what is their norm? What is their norm do not mean it is your norm. If you as a person have a schizoid personality you would even isolate yourself from even communicating here on this forum net. One example if the weather was so very bad that everyone was told on the news to stay inside their homes for a very long period of time. Would that mean everyone is not normal because they stay inside and not go out ? I Think not, Their are some people that enjoy being alone the key is being alone but "not" feeling lonely.😊it's 👌

  • @Gillsing

    @Gillsing

    6 жыл бұрын

    I used to consider myself 'normal', but unusual. Because what's normal for me is normal for me. But that's a highly subjective perspective, and an educated professional could offer a much more objective assessment. So when a psychologist had me go through some testing and then diagnosed me, and I saw that the Wikipedia article for Schizoid Personality Order fit me quite well, I saw no reason to argue with the diagnosis. I'm not an expert on personality disorders, I'm just an expert on my own self. The diagnosis doesn't change me, it merely describes me to the people who rely on descriptions like that. "If you as a person had a schizoid personality you would even isolate yourself from even communicating here on this forum net." I don't believe that is true. The Wikipedia article didn't say anything about refusing to communicate. Are you an expert on the subject?

    Gillsing I am not an expert, but my very close friend is a professional psychiatrist have been for years and also he a medical teacher in that field. And guess what? He is a complete "Nut Case". (Lol )But yet he is a well established doctor in his field. So who is there to say what is normal? It comes down to the State Of Mind if you feed into what others say you are or box you. NICE to communicate with you.😊

Plenty of unused houses which they can be moved into and life isnt fast paced and stressful. Then if or when they get better, they can choose to remain or move back into the city.

    I agree. I remember wanting to move out of my comfort zone when i'm at the lowest. Just going somewhere no one knows me then maybe i can be pushed to the brink of desperation to be able to move my ass off and live a life. Sadly, my financial situation is bad. At that time i just turned adult so once i tried to ask my friends if they can lend me but they are also young then so they can't help. I told my family i wanted to look for a job (like being a nanny) but my family disagreed and I had some conflict with them it may be because that is a low job and they think it aint safe for me since i just turned 18. Now after 9 years of being a shut-in (turning 10 years), i saved enough for me to be able to stay outside for 2 months but yeah pandemic happens. Maybe by the 2nd half of this year i'm gonna be able to do what have been postponed for a long time. I wish myself luck. You also, who ever is reading this. Here is a 🍋.

They worked their ass off for me. And yet, I have failed them. After living for 27 years, I have only held one temporary job for 10 months paying a stipend. You could say my parents spoiled me. I have no goals and little skills. I became depressed after having consecutive bad semesters at university and lost lots of confidence in myself to succeed at anything, so I didn't do anything during the summer breaks in university. I have no idea what type of job I want to do for the rest of my life, but I don't want to keep depending on my parents since it's not fair. I am thinking about killing myself to solve this problem. I used to walk alone and I never mind with that cause I hate unindependent and clingy types of person like my friends are. But sometimes, I feel lonely, depressed and asking myself why did I ended up becoming such a loner. So a few weeks ago, I've watched an mv from Keyakizaka46 which titled Eccentric and Silent Majority. It is really inspiring. The song taught me to be myself and now I'm even more confident to be doing things I like and no need to follow others. Now I try to look back at myself, have patience and express myself in a positive way.
