Why do I wear headphones when playing the saxophone? I'll explain it to you.

I'm often asked why I always wear these headphones when performing, and how it works that I can hear myself while having the playback in the headphones. I'll explain that a bit more in detail in this video.
The first step you can take when playing with a playback is, of course, to simply connect headphones to your laptop where you're playing the playback and put them on. This way, you can play along with the playback. The problem, of course, is that you can't hear yourself on the saxophone. You can work around this by using open or semi-open headphones, such as studio headphones. These don't completely cover your ears but rather sit on top, allowing you to still hear some external sounds.
Another option is to connect a Bluetooth speaker to your computer or phone. There are now very good Bluetooth speakers from various brands that can also be quite loud.
Another option is to use a small mixer. Let me show you the mixer I use. It has just the right number of channels for my needs. On one channel, I have my phone connected, where the playback is running. On another channel, my saxophone microphone is connected, and on another channel, I have an overhead microphone for my voice. A special feature is a switch that allows me to turn the microphone for the voice on and off. This is because my saxophone is much louder than my voice. So when I play, I turn off the microphone for the voice to avoid overloading.
Some people have also wondered why my sound sometimes sounds different when I play with playback compared to when I play alone. The reason for this is simply that I play with playback through the saxophone microphone, which creates a different sound than the microphone for the voice.
If you want to use a similar setup, you can get your own mixer and create your own mix of playback and saxophone with a little reverb on the saxophone. This makes practicing much more fun, and you can even make recordings.

Moin Bernd, gut erklärt. Ich habe das AG06 von Yamaha. Tut auch gute Dienste und hat Effekte. Das würde auch direkt am iPad funktionieren. Es hat auch Mute-Tasten für die Mikrofon-Kanäle, so dass ich ohne extra Gerät stumm schalten kann. Ich muss dann das Mischpult aber immer in Reichweite haben.

Hallo Bernd. Danke für die Erklärung. Ich benutze Kopfhörer wenn ich etwas mit Playback einspiele. So kann ich Rückkopplungen vermeiden (das berühmte "wiiiii" wenn man ein Mikro in die Hand nimmt), wenn die Lautsprecher live das Playback ausgibt und zu gleich über das Mikro aufnimmt und nochmals wiedergeben wird. Es hat den ähnlichen Effekt wie wenn man mit dem Kamera den Wiedergabe-Bildschirm aufnimmt, so bekommst du ein Bild der immer kleiner wird im BIld-im Bild bis ins unendliche.
Noch eine Frage: wieso gehen von Deinem Handyausgang zwei Klinkeneingänge ins Mischpult und welche Art von Adapter braucht man dafür (und wo gibt es die)?
Ist für die Aufnahme des Saxophons auch ein Großmembran Mikrofon gut geeignet oder besser so eines wie in dem Video was man am Saxophon befestigt? welches Playback würdest du empfehlen beziehungsweise welches verwendest du meist selbst für Aufnahmen? Und könnte man anstelle von diesem Mischpult auch das virtuelle Mischpult zum Beispiel in Logic pro verwenden? Oder hat so ein echtes, nicht virtuelles Mischpult Vorteile?

Hallo Bernd. Sehr informatives Video. Wie nimmst du denn beides, dein Saxophon und Playback, auf sodass es kein "Delay" gibt? Ich weiss, dass man das für Windows basierte Rechner einen Asio Treiber verwendet, um das zu vermeiden, aber ich verwende ein MacOS Rechner.

Bei Bernd ist das ein iPhone. Es gibt so Apple Lightning auf 3,5‑mm-Kopfhöreranschluss / Cinch / Klinke Adapter. Die gibt es sogar in der Form, dass auf der Seite, wo du das Cinch- / Klinken-Kabel anschließt noch mit Lightning Buchse, damit man das iPhone dazu noch laden könnte.

Bei 2:21 - 2:25 mins sagt er "...und da ist mein Handy angeschlossen", und bei 2:23 mins sieht sieht man den weißen Adapter am iPhone
Interessant, aber schon der Anblick des Mixers lässt mich (ver)zweifeln… 😅
Könntest Du mal was dazu sagen, auf was ich achten kann, wenn ich mit einer Band spiele? Oder auch im Saxduo?
Das probiere ich bei mir auch, nur mit dem Mix bekomme ich das nicht so gescheit hin.
