Why do I play FPS Games?

Apologies for the wait on this video, was originally meant to just be a quick sort of "chat" about why I play FPS games but it became a lot more personal very fast. Hope you enjoy it, next upload is much sooner.

First Person Shooters, a genre that will forever hold it’s rightful place as a pillar of the gaming experience. From selling a console to acting as a dam that contains an immense amount of toxicity from spilling over into the general gaming community, FPS games have truly cemented their place as a permanent genre to stay for years to come. Some of the greatest games of all time have been FPS’s, the entire halo franchise, that’s it really.
On a more serious note I’ve never hid the fact that I enjoy a good FPS game, but seeing as I’ve enjoyed this genre so much, at times almost too much, I want to understand just why one genre had such an insane stranglehold over not only my childhood, but pretty much my entire gaming career up until this point. The best way I can think of doing that is to essentially just reverse engineer what I would consider the perfect FPS game based on what I enjoy the most out of all the FPS games i’ve played.
Now through this video I’m not trying to say that FPS games were the only thing I ever played, I definitely wore the genre out a bit for myself but I still enjoy a multitude of non-FPS games. I’ve played through every single pokemon game to pass some time, I’m always down to jump around a solid platformer, simulate and manage an entire city, shatter precious ecosystems by overhunting apex predators, or re-think nearly every single one of my life choices when I hop onto a fighting game. If you told me I had 10,000 hours in Minecraft I’d probably say, “really, only 10000?”. I played through all of Montaro because it’d give me funny little achievements I could throw on my steam profile, and then I did it again when I learned there was a sequel. What i’m trying to say here is that I’ll try pretty much anything, except genshin impact.
When it comes to worldbuilding, I’ve always enjoyed a game that really sells it’s world and lore as something bigger than the game itself. I brought it up alongside Halo 2, so that’s really my example here, and that’s what was always so interesting about Halo 2’s story to me and why I still think it’s the best story in the franchise. The universe expands so much and we learn about so many new interesting characters and details that add so many layers of interest and mystery for me. Back when I played on the xbox 360, whenever I wasn’t wading through the same action set pieces in specific missions of MW3, Black Ops 2, or Halo, I was spending my time reading through Halsey’s journal, or looking up theory videos about whoever this “mendicant bias” guy was, my tastes for FPS games didn’t really evolve until I got on a computer.
See, while console FPS was evolving under titles like Goldeneye and Halo, the PC had already been tearing it up for years beforehand with Wolfenstein, Quake, Doom, Unreal Tournament, Half-Life and by extension Counter-Strike. Console FPS games had this issue where they needed to figure out how to translate a mouse and keyboard, which were two entirely separate accessories, into one. Goldeneye laid a really good foundation, but the N64 controller’s lack of a second analog stick is built upon by the Duke’s dual analog layout, and used perfectly for Halo.
I bring this up because this leads pretty well into my next two pillars for my perfect FPS game, movement, and a feeling of speed. See, considering PC fps’s didn’t have to worry about controller support until much later, the precision of keyboard and mouse allowed developers to make these games FAST. Now, apologies to the oldheads out there who were out getting m-m-m-m-monsterkills every match in unreal or were absolutely tearing it up on instagib, I was not old enough to be apart of that when I made my transition to the PC, I actually started out with CS:GO as my first PC fps.
Those games would be Doom (2016) and Titanfall 2, the sense of speed in these games is just absolutely blistering, Titanfall 2 especially. The moment you actually learn how to bhop in Titanfall 2 it’s over, you go from running through these levels to basically flying through them. Doom’s sense of speed went from kinda quick to FAST when Doom Eternal released, gone is just normally strafing around an enemy and replacing it is dashing circles around a group of demons, and launching off of monkeybars, the grappling hook, I think you get the point.

Spectacle is so good when its actually implemented into games well, I.e. Titanfalls 2's "affect and cause" mission, every encounter in New Mumbasa in Halo 2, King Minos in Ultrakill, or seeing a fleet warp in from the surface of a planet in No Mans Sky, its so rare to see it done right, but when it is, its one of the best parts of any game

@DIGITAL Superhot sold well when it wasn't in VR. Echo Arena *works* because it's a VR sport, it's not "a gimmick". Beat Saber can only be done in VR, and you cannot call that a gimmick. Zenith is an MMORPG in VR, just like the many others that came before it on PC. Hibow could easily work as a non-VR game, but it's just made better by VR. VR is in no way a gimmick for any of the popular games, it's always either a different way to experience a familiar genre, or a new thing entirely that couldn't exist without VR.

As someone who played Doom when it came out, and played many of the classic FPS of the 90s and early 00s, what I like about FPS games is that other than VR, it's the most immersive gaming experience. You're experiencing everything through the character's eyes and something I enjoy doing since those days is that feeling of, yeah, there's a challenge, but you're exploring a world too. You're going through a map and seeing things that you're never going to see in real life (for the classic shooter that's more sci-fi). In my case, it was fascinating seeing the evolution and going from Doom that didn't have so many interactive elements to something like Half-Life that had many interactive elements and now I got to explore different rooms in a facility! Yes, I might find an alien or a monster that wants to kill me, but that's just what makes it a game. I like first-person games in general, even if they're just puzzles, and I think that's the reason why, it literally feels like opening the window to a different world.
The Crysis trilogy and the metro 2033 trilogy will always be my favourite fps games just because of how fucking good the atmosphere is

I’m glad he mentioned ultrakill that game is the best. So thanks for making a vid about it all that time ago otherwise I may have never played it.
As a huuuuuge titanfall fan that feeling when you manage to find some sort of route that lets you go at Mach 1 speeds through an opening area (honestly one of my favourites is some areas inside of Kanes complex) is just priceless. I mostly stick to the multiplayer now due to the adrenaline rush I get from somehow using my kraber as a shotgun and hitting my shot while we’re both going blisteringly fast in opposite directions being so great. I don’t ever play the multiplayer of games to see how many kills I can rack up, I play to see how much fun and excitement I can sap out of a single kill. The first time I played titanfall 2 was at a friends house, I think about 2 weeks after it launched. I fell in love with it quickly after wallrunning for the first time, and it kept getting better the more I learnt the way movement worked, and how it fell into my playstyle. I’m no longer big on fps games personally, I only ever really play titanfall 2 and the odd match of bf4 with friends, and I was never big on cod, but there’s some unforgettable memories that I’ve had from playing fps games that just aren’t able to be had in any other game.

The whole movement thing really just made me love a silly little game about gorillas jumping around a forest in vr. Seriously you should play gorilla tag whenever you get a headset, the gameplay is extremely fun (jumping on branches and looking like a badass doing flips) the movement is the whole game, so fair enough that its HECKING AMAZING. theres not really a storyline but the maps are small enough you can learn them and learn to move quickly as well as big enuogh that you dont get bored after 30 hours, ive put a few hundred hours into it and am now getting into the competitive side of things, on an intermediate team and god damnn it just keeps getting better the better you get at it.

the first game that really cemented fps as my fav genre was black on the ps2. we never got the xbox in my country so no halo until 360 and halo 3. i love fps games. great video
You need to take a look at severed steel its the only game that I've ever played or even heard of that you can control a full back flip or front flip shooting the duration and not having it be a static animation that and combined with the wall running and stunts it was a great experience to play through the game on 1 hit mode because its one of those games where you can tell you're getting better at it from the 5th hour to the 20th. That and it just makes you feel like a badass.
so true strxyo
I got into FPS with MW2 and WAW, and was hooked immediately. Played Halo after that and only got drawn in further. I’m hoping that the new MW II reboot takes COD further back to its roots like MW 2019 did.
You can include sim/simcade Racing games in first person category too.

I grew up as a kid wanting to serve in the military for at least a year, preferably air force or national guard. My family stopped me from signing up in high school, then just this year I learned I've got a medical condition that'll keep me from joining. I have quite fond memories of playing shooters my mate had slightly snuck onto the the computers in High School. Had Half Life and CS 1.6 on it- also managed to get the Comp Sci copy of halo on the the other computers- never really played pc games at the time yet I was somehow *destroying* everyone else in counterstrike and halo- I was an avid console fps player at the time but those guys wouldve wreked me in cod or that. I eventually got my own pc and played shooters on that which really helped in college when my classmates would challange eachother to Krunker matches.
One of the best Far Cry games is one most people don't know about, its Instincts/Predator, console versions of the original game that took a completely different direction, you get beast powers, one of which is letting you move super fast and make incredible long jumps. It's a janky game for sure but it's still fun for those speedy moments or zipping between bad guys and feral punching them off a cliff.
I lost my interest on FPS for simply not my style, and I respect how this Genre still remain alive till now I'm more into Strategic games which has the opposite popularity because most of it not being friendly to Newbies
All of your favourite parts of an FPS is applied in Warframe. But there’s only one problem…. It’s third person…
One of my personal favorite Fps games is Medal of honor: underground. It's a super old PS1 game that my mom bought for nostalgia sake.
i was abt 11 when i started playing games(mostly family friendly games like papa pizerria and those games). The first mobile game i played in teens was PUBG Mobile, and first ever PC Game I played was apex legends. The first game I ever bought with real money was titanfall 2. So i would safely say i am hardcore team FPS

Modern Warfare (2019) is my most favorite fps because of the movement system and the satisfying gunplay (don't get me started on hardcore: ie, see my channel). I played the beta and I was 100% hooked. The only thing missing from your list is world building. Especially if you only play multiplayer. Before that, Black ops 3 was my favorite for the same reasons, although, I actually enjoyed that Champaign. (I only remember playing MW2019 Champaign, I don't remember things in it) Definitely some fast moments here and there.

"movement and speed" I like the opposite of this. Slowpaced trenchwar battles which might even feel like stalemates for others. Had a lot of such battles in "Build N Shoot" (literally trenchwar, oldschool), some in Natural Selection (where you have to fight for each room of the spacestation, and sometimes if both teams are well anchored you literally fight for each meter), and in TF2 Cart pushing (but this one is artificially slowed down by the speed of the cart).

Hey Stryxo, I have this topic I'm working on but I haven't done anything like this before. Could you send a link to your script to see the layout :D
A hidden gem game recommendation I have is Left 4 Dead 2 versus mode. The base game versus is filled with trolls and not set-up correctly for competitive. However the community built modded servers designed to make L4D2 versus as competitive as possible. No medkits, no tier 2 weapons and map/gameplay changes that make it pretty even against the infected. They even have a ranking system so you 're paired with similar skilled players. You really have to work as a team if you want to win. No K/D ratio, kill streaks or weapon classes your main goal as survivors is distance through each level and the infected need to stop you. That simple, but I've never experienced such intense gameplay. Valve is king in the FPS competitive genre. Never thought I'd be playing a game from 2009 in 2023. Cedapug hosts competitive matches for anyone interested.
Dusk is my favourite FPS! 😎
My preference is purely down to gameplay. I kept trying to figure this out and the conclusion I've come to is that FPS games are simple. I want simplicity for 3 reasons: - I want to engage with the core mechanics of the game as much as possible, rather than staring at a skill tree, grinding for resources, paying attention to a story that's probably mediocre or trying to figure out which ability would synergize best with my overall build. - I'm pretty stupid. I can deal with simpler puzzle games like Portal or The Talos Principle, but anything made by zachtronics, Baba is You, grand strategy games, RTS's, Factorio... these just scare me and I don't do well when I try to get into one of them. - Core FPS mechanics are simple, so these games generally don't have many mechanics that you can miss. I didn't figure out that I was doing the dodge offset wrong in Bayonetta, I didn't get around to unlocking the skills people say make witcher 3's combat fun, it took me a long time to figure out why Shredders (snowboarding game) was dropping my inputs at times, and so on. In FPS games things are generally pretty obvious and if not, I have 15 years of experience to help me.
Personally, I've always preferred third person shooters over FPS games, but I like my fair share of FPS games as well. I've played a fair bit of Halo Infinite and I'm gonna play MCC eventually, Overwatch was fun for a while, and Superhot is freaking fun as well. But overall I just prefer TPS games, I don't know what exactly it is but I just like them better. That said, my favorite shooter and overall multiplayer game is absolutely Splatoon 2 (and probably 3 when in 25 days). It has some of the most unique movement in any game I've played with swimming through your ink to both move faster and reload and it's also getting a huge upgrade in 3, it has some of the most in-depth lore I've seen in any game (for context, every song is made by an in-universe band/artist and each band/artist has their own lore attached to them and there's a TON of them), it's fast not only in movement but also just speed of each match with short single player levels and online matches that can last 3 minutes in normal battles and anywhere from 1-5 minutes in Ranked which makes it easily digestible, and it might not be Doom speeds but it can get freaking hectic. The base game's single player campaign might not be that good, but the Octo Expansion DLC campaign is freaking fantastic with some of the best world-building in the series, some of the best level design in the series, one of the best finales to a single player game I've seen in years, and the definitive hardest secret final boss fight I've EVER suffered through and I somehow still came out on top. The world is fantastic, the multiplayer is great, Octo Expansion is a great campaign, and I can't freaking wait for Splatoon 3 to instantly overtake 2 for my favorite multiplayer game.
The Destiny 2 Story was amazing, sadly you can't play it anymore since it got free to play.
