What has COVID done to Games?

Ever since the world shut down we’ve all been bombarded with the effects of global pandemic that have, for many, completely changed our schedules and lifestyle. From shortages of common products, to the rise in prices of those same products, it’s hard to know when, or if, we’ll ever truly go back to “normal”.
The games industry has been no stranger to the effects of the pandemic, if 2020 and 2021 were any indication, they’ve been hit pretty hard. From delays, cancelled games, neutered releases, and layoffs, the entire games industry has been in a bad spot for awhile now. But, 2022 has come, and promises so many games that we’ve been waiting for that it’s hard not to be excited about something coming out this year. So, considering the world is in the early stages of reopening, and games that were massively delayed are now on the horizon, let’s take a look back at just what happened to the games industry due to the virus, and how it will probably be affected going forward.
Throw a global pandemic into this mix that forces everyone to completely re-consider how they live, work, and relax, and you can begin to see what happened in 2021.
And the games that did manage to come out in 2021 either released in a state that was buggy, broken, and required massive support and updates to fix, or released just straight up missing massive amounts of features that are now promised to be added months or possibly even years down the line. Battlefield 2042 and Halo Infinite are the shining examples for both of those points, and are only 2 examples of many games lifespans that existed during both 2020 and 2021.
Speaking of the state of triple A gaming, I’d say the largest bittersweet positive that came out of the games of last year (and the lack there-of) is the rise of indie games’ popularity. Inscryption being recognized for it’s creative and unique experience, Ultrakill being ranked as the 27th highest rated game of all time on steam (which yes, kind of invalidates the title of the second video on my channel, yes I know you have played Ultrakill, it’s a title man), and It Takes Two winning game of the year at the game awards this year over industry titans Resident Evil and Metroid Dread.
And it’s not just indie games that have exploded in popularity, we’ve seen a boom in just the internet in general. KZreadrs, Twitch streamers, the internet, and games overall have grown so much in popularity worldwide that every single new big game that comes out is a massive event. I can only comment on the games that I was there for, but New World absolutely exploded and was massive for a week, Halo Infinite surpassed that and was a massive event for the entire gaming community, (rightfully deserved I’ve been waiting for Halo Infinite for 6 years) and Dying Light 2 went beyond Halo Infinite with an absolutely massive launch of his own, which is great to see for a game that’s a lot of fun (I’ll talk about it more in my video next week).

    i would certainly say in the case of actiblizzard and EA they were going to release stinkers regardless, since they were on a streak of poor releases right before covid, too, they are being poorly managed if the controversies hasn't made that clear, covid or not Vanguard was going to be disappointing, as the direction of the game clearly was not strong and disrespected the series legacy, 2042 was a knee jerk to V's failure and rushed out for the christmas season, was still going to be bad under the best conditions.

    I think AAA gaming was on a major decline before the pandemic anyway. When you spend more on marketing your game than you did on developing it, there is a major problem.

  • @jestr8958
    @jestr89582 жыл бұрын

    It really does suck that these developers have to do things under all this, but I think the real culprit is the publishers and management team so outside of reality that you can put out quality releases with these circumstances. If it's not feasible to throw out a good game with rich amounts of content, then management needs to recognize that. No one would mind if Halo and Battlefield got another year in development if it means the players had a stronger product to start off with.

    Unfortunately, I think whoever is in charge of publishing games know they can release unfinished games and get away with it. Fallout 76, No Man's Sky, Cyberpunk 2077 all did this and managed to get away with it. But it's clear the developers care, otherwise 76 would be shut down and wouldn't have any upcoming updates, No Man's Sky would've been left behind, and Cyberpunk wouldn't have it's developers working to fix the game. It seems to be a trend that I really hope dies soon.

    I think people refusing to acknowledge that Covid affects the media industry. Demanding games come out and then complaining when they aren’t as good as they would’ve been without Covid. People saying the CGI was bad in a movie made predominantly in the pandemic or that there is a lot of cut content in a Covid released game. It’s just really inconsiderate in processes which already are mind-numbingly hard to create.

    Yes. I often get very frustrated when people begin to whine about the quality of ... anything really, when they know little to nothing about the process that actually happens behind the scenes. What I've come to realize, is that those people who spend their time criticizing games, movies, and contentment creators all day, are typically not very happy. We can't convince them to appreciate the art, but we can at least take comfort in the fact that we are capable of enjoying something.

    The main thing im really sad about post covid, and i dont know if covid affected it's rise, but it's how crypto is making getting into the pc scene more and more difficult. Graphics cards are now almost the same price as it would have been to get a pc 3-4 years ago, all because people who mine crypto are buying massive amounts of graphics cards with botting programs scanning the web for them, massively inflating their price, it's honestly infuriating to me.
