Why do cyclists do this??

This road is a National Speed Limit (60mph) - I never normally do that speed, as it's quite a narrow twisty road I'm usually doing between 40 - 50mph depending on the road conditions, but the cyclists are riding 3 abreast at first, then one of them looks back & moves in, but still leaves 2 abreast and I wasn't prepared to overtake them coming up to the bend. Luckily, I managed to overtake them further down the hill where the road straightened out. 😜

Me personally have no issue with cyclists doing this and I have had a lone cyclist before riding out away from the edge along a country road. One thing I find is we need to be careful along these roads as the edges are not a good place for cyclists to be due to fallen branches, broken tarmac and, as I could see on the video here, mud on the road. The fact they went from three to two says they had seen you but also tried to make the overtake shorter by not being three cyclists long. It could also be they are aware of the upcoming bends and are trying to discourage an overtake while acknowledging your presence. You did the right thing in my opinion by holding back and waiting for a better opportunity to pass them. I find a small beep of the horn just prior to starting the overtake can also help let them know you are about to pass, but also it gives them an opportunity to give an indication they are not happy for the pass If only more drivers took care like you around the more vulnerable, I have seen many that would've tried to pass at the most unsuitable place along a road like that

Luckily I wasn't particularly in a hurry, as I was early for work - but you're right about the road Bob, lots of muck & broken branches along it, so I like to keep my speed down in this case 😉 - I'm in no way getting at the cyclists, to be fair - they did give me a wave once I passed them - just another one of my "commute to work" videos - this road features quite a bit on my channel (if you hadn't noticed already) 😀👍

Cycling is a nice sport/hobby but unfortunately it seems to attract loads of individuals that feels very entitled having bad, selfish behavior in traffic in various forms. Not long ago a cyclist hit my car door by purpose. At that moment, my car had been stationary for more than a minute, the cyclist had seen it all the time. It was a protest against my car being located slightly on the cycling lane in a junction. The junction is badly designed and turning left, there i zero visibility, so You need to be placed where i was to see other traffic. The cyclist admitted he had seen me all the time(stationary) but as my car was in the "wrong" spot he consider it OK to drive in to my right door. He escaped when i started to call the police. Luckily the dent bulged back so no damages as such. Happy cycling.....

It's primary position; that was a single lane road and nowhere near wide enough for you to pass safely, so it's a deterrent: they are ensuring that if you were incompetent or dangerous enough to think that you could, then you wouldn't be able to without having to physically go through them. Personally on a road like this I would always be looking for an opportunity to pull over for a few seconds and let a car pass me but I'm just a casual commuter. Don't forget patience is one of the best skills for a driver to have, and it's a rare thing on our roads. They might be slow but they have as much right to use the road as a car driver. Just do what you did here, ease off and give them space.
