    DumbDuck44 the cat brings the animals to her owners so she is attempting to provide for her family not kill for pleasure. Btw stop using human morality to judge an animal. Its moronic. Animals have no sense of what is right or wrong.

  • @BoopSnoot

    Of course they kill for pleasure. We know this because when cats play, all their play behavior is mimicking the act of stalking and murdering prey. When a cat bits the head of a kickaroo, holding it with its front paws, and rapidly kicking with its back claws, that's how it would catch and disembowel prey that's about its size like a rabbit. Like you say, cats don't have morals, and that's not a moral judgement, its just a fact. Your cat loves to murder, and thinks about murder most of the day, and is imagining how fun it would be to murder something when you're waiving that fake bird toy or mouse toy in front of it.

    Different cats have different hunting styles. One of our cats is 18 years old and his senses are very limited. His technique is quite impressive. First he observes the hunting area and every single movement, sometimes for days. Then he chooses one spot at which he remains without any movement - almost blind and deaf he simply hits everything that moves in range.

    Sandwich and her kind are deceptively powerful for their size- my childhood cat was only 10 lbs and would happily bring home 4 ft long black snakes in addition to the various squirrels, voles, rabbits, birds, mice, and lizards she’d catch. There have even been a few incidents with raccoons where they’ve come off worse than she has - and that was in an area where they’re at least double her weight. (She’s an indoor cat now due to advancing age and environmental concerns.)

    The trait of being a predator is somewhat lost in some cats. I've had MANY cats throughout my life and some of them are exceptional hunters, but some of them don't even bother. Two factors that I have noticed play a role: - A cat raised with brother/sister cats (even better the mother since they learn from her) are most likely to become agile and sharpened because they train their instincts by playing - Also I've seen an increased hunting activity on females while they are raising kittens. As if they're trying to teach the younglings how to hunt.

    I grew up in the country with my grandparents. We used to work on the corn, strip it by hand and move it around. The mice infesting it would run out and hide under the wooden planks. But we had our friend with us, this beautiful, spotted black and white cat named Fifi. And Fifi was an absolute destroyer. She hunted them down, killed dozens of mice a day. Nothing could escape her. I used to watch her catch birds who flew too low, snatch them out of the air. She was just on a mission every day. I loved her and she loved me so much too, every morning waking up to her licking my hair. It's been decades and I still think of you, my little lady.

    Our cats get good food and plenty of treats, but still love to hunt. I do notice that they typically play with chipmunks and often lose interest after awhile. Unfortunately our dog shows no such mercy. I think they are choosy about whom they consume. I don't think they get as many birds as people fear. Beware a cat will jump to its death for bird. They almost cant help it.

One of them would not sleep without his milk and would wake you up when he's hungry or when he wants something. One of them would only go home when he wanted to sleep. One of them would not stop eating. Finally the older one, the calm one and the protective one. He would usually follow if you go outside in the midle of the night but he goes bezerk when he's hungry.

    A cat owned by a friend who lives in the country brought home a crawdad once. Also a small snake. Both still alive. Mine, being in the city, gets rats, mice, and birds on occasion. A month ago we found mouse droppings in the dog treat drawer and all the dog treats missing with a nice hole gnawed through the beggan strips bag. I (jokingly) chastised the cat for not getting the mouse. Next evening? I hear his muffled "meof" at the back door and open it up. And he has a mouse in his mouth. Not quite dead. I had to kill it for him so it wouldn't suffer. But on the upside, no more mouse droppings have been found, even after leaving bait out.

    +Zach Crawford Because they are very destructive to the ecosystem. Domestic and feral cats kill billions of birds in the US each year, and have caused the extinction of several species. They aren't wild animals, they're domestic, and it is unnatural to have so many of them going around killing things.

  • @zachcrawford5

    @zachcrawford5

    8 жыл бұрын

    Thats kind of how evolution works. Species show up in a new area and wipe out or severely alter other species all the time. Cats are semi-domesticated. Except for the harshest of climates cats do not require humans to survive. It is in the core of their nature to hunt. If someone doesn't want a cat that hunts (and that perfectly fine) they shouldn't get a cat. They could get a rabbit, it is cute and furry like a cat and it doesn't hunt.

  • @elSethro

    @elSethro

    8 жыл бұрын

    Evolution naturally involves very little movement of invasive species (like cats) between ecosystems; that's something that became much more common due to humans. It's so unnatural and destructive that we are currently considered to be in the sixth (and one of the worst) extinction event in the history of the earth. So again, the introduction of domestic cats to an ecosystem is destructive and unnatural. My point still stands. If you stop them from hunting, either by keeping them inside or equipping them with a leash or a bib or a bell, you can have a cat without contributing to their negative impact on the ecosystem.

  • @elSethro

    @elSethro

    That's a very disingenuous interpretation of what I said, and I have no idea where you got anything about cutting off body parts. If you don't value species diversity then I doubt I can convince you to, but there are economic and ecological consequences to reductions in diversity whether or not you think the species are worthy of existing or not. Anyway, you haven't really refuted anything I said before, so I don't have anything else to add to my previous comment.

  • @zachcrawford5

    @zachcrawford5

    8 жыл бұрын

    ***** I said in my last comment that " I am all for diversity of species". So I do value diversity, there is nothing there to convince me of. As for the removing of body parts, you said nothing of that. But a lot of people declaw their cats to prevent them from hunting or clawing people. I think preventing a cat from hunting is like preventing a person from solving problems. Both would protect the status quo of nature but would violate the nature of that animal. I have worked at an animal hospital and have lived with outdoor, indoor and everything in between cats. From my fair amount of experience, declawed cats get hurt by other animals and humans because they can't protect themselves, cats with bells tend to be pray for larger animals the can hear the bell and get hit by cars more. Many of the domesticated animal species are naturally heard/pack animals so walking with a leash next to a another animal (us) is somewhat natural to them and if done right can even be "enjoyable", but a cat is a semi-domesticated animal at best and does not generally travel in groups, so leashing is much more alien to them (the odd one will enjoy it, but i'm sure even the odd human would).

    Cats obviously aren't anything like dogs. We don't have strong bond with them, compared to canines. Trained dogs only hunt on our command, their psychology has evolved to listen to humans. Cats never learned that. They were always used to deal with pest problems. They hunt pests, they eat them, and they also get rewarded for their hunting with more food. That is a positive reinforcement to keep hunter instincts active and strong. Humans can't really order cats around, because pests are hard to locate. So cats have to be let to hunt solely on their own.

    You've got a point, but I don't subscribe to your entire argument. The difference between cats in dogs doesn't necessarily have to do with humans. I think the relationship we have with cats and dogs was shaped more by the genetic baggage they bring then by out attitudes towards them. Dogs are pack hunters, their instinct is to find their place in the pack and work in its interest. To a dog, it's owner is a pack member. When trained well, the dog will see the owner as the alpha leading his pack and obedience training is as much about teaching the owner how to lead as it is to teach the dog how to follow :). Cats, on the other hand, have always been solitary predators and their coexistence with humans was more about mutual convenience than anything else. It's not that humans shaped their hunting instincts, in fact, cats were never fully domesticated. And you can have a very strong bond with them, it's just a different kind of bond as to a cat you are not the leader, you are, best scenario, a good friend. I personally love cats and dogs equally and many other animals as well. I find all of them are wonderful and lovable in their own way. And to make any of them happy one needs to stop treating them as human babies and projecting human characteristics unto them and face up to the fact that animals have instincts, needs and motivations that are quite different from our own.

  • @dackmont

    @dackmont

    Humans are predators too (the most lethal ever), and we hunt cooperatively, so it makes sense that we'd "collaborate" (over evolutionary time scales) with pack hunters more than with solitary ones.
