Why Do Avro RJs Still Fly in Canada?

The BAe 146/Avro RJ "Whisperjet" is easily one of the most unique looking airliners out there. However, they're slowly being retired from airlines around the world.
So, why do a dozen of these airplanes still fly in Canada?

The need to operate on gravel strips in often appalling winter weather is why the BAe 146/Avro RJ has found a major niche in Canada. In fact, a number of retired planes may end up in Canadian service with airlines servicing First Nation communities in northern Canada.

I'm fortunate to have flown both the 737-200 for Firstair and the Avro RJ for Summit into the gravel strips in northern Canada. I can say that the little RJ is very capable as a short field aircraft into these gravel strips and would frequently be landing at max weight. Take off was the real delight with the RJ though, with those four engines singing their tune you'd be airborne in just around 3000' at max weight, or very close to it using flap 33. It's a real pilots airplane... a true delight to hand fly and maneuver on the approach or departure. If both the 737 and RJ were sitting on the ramp and I could fly either one....I'd walk over to the RJ.

Fantastic mate!! Did you ever fly into Norman Wells? I lived there for 6+ years in the 1950's, our only real way in or out was a DC-3 callsign CF-ESO which belonged Imperial Oil - ESSO! It was an incredible experience for over 6 years of my life and taught me so much about what I've done with the rest of my life!! I noticed there were quite a few 146/RJ's parked in storage at Kemble / Cotswold Airport/UK. Slowly these have been vanishing - and I don't think it's for scrapping in the boneyard! Here's hoping they are finding new homes and in service in the world somewhere - luv'em!! For history lovers, the 146 started off as a design study at Hatfield, UK by De Havilland Aircraft, who were then merged with Hawker Siddeley, later absorbed by BAC before name change to BAe..........it must have been a good design to survive all that upheaval. Also, while under HS, some of the design work was passed to another company within the HS group - Gloster Aircraft based in Hucclecote, Gloucestershire. One of my old workmates temporarily transferred to Hatfield to do design work on the transport doors, many, many years ago now - happy days!!

The only time I flew with RJ100 was my travel to Libya. It was a chartered flight for an oil company. We took off in a city called Zintan and landed on gas field in Sarir to unload workers, and continued to Benghazi. The plane is smooth, I sat close to the engine, and hardly hear the sound, I thought we lost power after a couple of minute because turbines have less sound. I think it's a good aircraft.

Flew in one, once, I think it was YYJ-YYC. I remember noticing that the cabin fittings (e.g. the window shade, the seatback tray, etc.) all felt like they were in *much* better shape than on the nearly-new Boeing I'd flown on a few days prior. I guess it wasn't just the mechanicals that were a bit overengineered! "They don't make 'em like they used to."

In the early 80's I was attending an airshow at Barton Areodrome near Manchester. UK. This is a grass field strip only suitable for light aircraft. The late cancellation of one of the display exhibits had created a lull in proceedings, when unexpectedly the loudspeakers announced that they had managed to get permissions for a visit by a prototype of this aircraft that was flying "on test" nearby. A few minutes later, the aircraft arrived overhead and performed a number of passes. Whisper quite and a beautiful sight... then as now. Was this the aircraft's first "public debut"..I don't know, maybe not, but the event has stayed in my mind ever since.

Absolute magic little aircraft!! Flew on one several times here in New Zealand - loved it!! Incredibly quiet inside and outside! Only thing that killed it here in NZ was that it had 4 engines, which required far more maintenance than 2. But as for shortfield - well, it was incredible!! Only thing against it was the fuel consumption - a little heavy. A beautiful airplane!!

I used the 146/RJ countless times: Dan-Air, Air UK, Crossair, Sabena (all now defunct) and BA cityflier. The last left a bad taste: having had to change my reservation following a bereavement, I was made to show a death certificate at check-in. The good news was that the consequent delay meant I got bumped up to Business Class: just as well, since the six-abreast layout was far too cramped with all seats occupied. In 3+2, an excellent aeroplane: I used to try for a seat just behind the wing so I could watch - and listen to - the complex flaps deploying and retracting.

In the 1980s I was working at Canadair/Bombardier "Regional Jet" developing pilot training programs for their new aircraft. The Bombardier RJ was in a race to establish the concept of a small jet to compete against turbo-prop aircraft for short haul flights. The BAE146/AvroRJ was another contender. Avro 'tweaked' Bombardier by sponsoring a large billboard in Montreal, right outside the Bombardier RJ HQ building. It read "The Regional Jet - AvroRJ" with a huge photo of their aircraft. It always made me smile as I wondered about the Bombardier executives who somehow overlooked officially registering / protecting that iconic name: Regional Jet. At any rate, the Bombardier line soon established itself as "The" defacto Regional Jet, and went on to a very successful run with several variants developed later on. Thanks for this update on "where the AvroRJ' is now. Cheers and thanks!

Our study took place before Porter started, with their fleet of Dash 8 Q400 turbo props - we actually discounted the Q400 from our assessment as fully loaded it required a longer runway for takeoff and landing. The BAe146 is an awesome aircraft, our model proved that the airport could be run at max capacity using this plane without violating the cumulative noise restrictions placed on the airport by the tripartite agreement that governs its operation. Great blast from the past video! In California, Air Cal, PSA and WestAir/United Express flew the 146. The ALF502 engines were a turbofan conversion from the T-55 turboshaft engines that powered the CH-47 Chinook. The early engines had teething problems, so much so that BAe was said to mean "Bring Another Engine"... The problems got worked out and it became a very reliable airplane. In the late '80s I enjoyed flying a thousand hours in the 146 and loved the spacious flight deck, short field capability, its delightfully light controls and trailing beam landing gear that made most landings "greasers"... Its main downsides were its slow speed compared to other jets in busy airspace, and a ground air conditioning system that probably works great in Canada, but was clearly not designed for use in the hot Central Valley of California. IMO it makes an ideal tanker because of its carrying capacity, terrific slow speed handling and maneuverability.

The 146s were a big part of Air Canada's "regional" fleet (Air Nova before that was moved over to "Jazz"). Commonly used out of Montréal and the Maritimes. It has the notable feature of pumping in mist into the cabin during dinal stages of descent ( warm moist iar from outside being cooled down and moist8re condensing). Was such a cool sight to see the mist come out of the vents on ceiling and drrop down to floor. BAe got out of its own jets in 2001 and when Airbus became a corporation of its own (instead of joint venture) it fully pulled out and Airbus pirchased the wing manufacturing facility at Broughton even though there no longer was a British partner in UK. It has since been focused on defence contracts. The 146s were also used by Ansett in Australia. (and they origially had serious problems with oil fumes getting into aircraft ventillation and making crew sick), Also notable. the Windsors own or owned a 146 and Charles used it to fly to Paris to bring back the body of Lady Diana (during a time where that family was secverely criticised for not planning a proper funeral). The CRJ being a twin engine got all the orders in the mid to later 1990s and dried up the market for the BAe 146; The renamed and revamped Bae 146/RJ plane was too little too late and still 4 engines for a regional jet. BAe got out at the right time in 2001. 9/11 dried up the market for most regional jets and Bombardier refised to cut production for the CRJ200 and needed its first bailout (Beaudoin family injuected new capital in exchange for taking the recreational products back to family owned business (now BRP ). The 146/RJ with 4 engines coudln't really compete against the CRJ 700 and planned 900, and Bombardier prior to its near bankrupcy (and bankrupcty of Nortwest) was about ready to launch the C-Series in early 2000s - a launch that ended up being delayed by many many years).

The mist drifting into the cabin scared the bejesus out of a colleague of mine who was terrified of flying, the first time we flew to Guernsey for a business meeting😂 Also, the Royal family didn't own any 146, they are Royal Air Force VIP transports operated by 32 Squadron out of Northolt. Charles didn't pilot it to collect Diana's body, it was an RAF crew. Charles used to be allowed to take the controls sometimes but that ended after he damaged one during landing in 1994.

So I Do believe it is one of the most beautiful aircraft, the ones, in my opinion, are the Beacgcraft Stagerwing, the DC-3, the Beach-18, the Boeing 707, the Boeing 747, and the BAE Avro 146 that brought flying airplanes gracefully to our future...

It's interesting about their gravel runway certification - one of the other few passenger jets actually designed for such service was the three engined Yakovlev Yak-42, which the Soviets used to great effect in serving their northern mines and communities with gravel runways. Having flown on one, they are great aircraft, albeit also 'overengineered' - but the 146/RJ fleet undoubtably need less maintenance than an old Soviet design would! Four engines in northern Canada, three engines in northern Siberia - redundancy is good! Yakovlev claimed that the Yak-42 could take off on only two of its three engines, and could cruise and land safely on just one. I suspect the 146 can make similar claims easily.

BTW, first time I saw a Antonov 124 (at Mirabel/YMX many moons ago), my first thoughts were " hey, a BAe 146 on steroids :-)" (high wing, 4 engines, hump on top, beefy landing gear).

Lately I’ve been getting some of your older videos that I haven’t seen pop up on my feed. Really enjoyed this one. I’ve never had the pleasure of flying in one of these, but I’ve seen plenty at my home airport (YKA), both civilian & Conair (looks like those photos in your video are from YKA) & I’ve seen North Cariboo Air RJ100s parked at YXJ. Cool aircraft!

I used to fly out of BUR a lot back in the late 90s, would routinely see these (in United livery IIRC) on the tarmac. I believe they were used to fly to a specific rocky mountain ski destination (Vail maybe) that had a short runway.

1 memory from 30(?) years ago. YYC to somewhere interior BC. The flight attendant coming on mic to notify us that the dog-awful noises about to emanate from the landing gear was entirely normal. She was right - about the dog-awful noise. Glad she told us.

Pacific Southwest Airlines (long gone now) had a few, they were using them in the '80s to provide scheduled airline service to LAX from Buchanan Field west of San Francisco, where their low-noise and short take off capability made the whole project feasible. After USAir absorbed PSA they switched to turboprops instead.

Use to fly out of Cranbrook on these many years ago. Can't remember if it was PWA back then that had a few of these. But i do remember being warned by the flight stewardess during landing approach that the landing gear makes a distinct loud bang when lowered. And it sure did. Great plane and sure miss them being in regular service. Glad some still have the privilege of flying in the remaining fleet.

With the frequent big forest fires we have had in California the last few years, I have seen these air tankers used often. They work very well in canyons as mentioned because they can very quickly ascend after a drop to avoid rapidly approaching ridges.
