I flew from Canada to France... in an HOUR?

Back in the summer, I flew from Canada to France in less than an hour... But how's that possible?
Well, just off the coast of Newfoundland is a tiny French overseas collectivity called Saint Pierre and Miquelon.
These islands are home to only 6,000 people, and they have their own airline called Air Saint-Pierre!
Needing to fly from St. John's to Halifax, I decided to make an overnight detour to France to fly with them, and it was a trip to remember.
With thanks to ‪@MarkBrandonAviation‬ for the use of his photos.

I’ve flown myself there a few times! I visited the Gander air traffic control centre and they had a great story. They said one time the Scottish controllers (who own the other side of the Atlantic) called them and said “hey so we have a French airplane, going from France to France, and they wanna cross the Atlantic to get there”. The Gander controllers had to explain that yes, it has a French airport identifier, but it’s actually on this side so send them over!

Speaking as a German, what I have seen in this video mostly doesn't look French at all to me. Primarily I see the houses and think: "North-America!" Although to be fair, similarly flimsy housing with poor isolation seems to be common in Scandinavia, Iceland and northern Russia as well, accounting for large but sparsely populated northern areas where probably less than 5% of the European population live.

I hopped over on foot while I was visiting Newfoundland. The car ferry is relatively new: Canada drug its feet on building a suitable dock at Fortune and it was only opened last year. Previously there was a ferry only for foot traffic. If you return, be sure to visit the Ark Museum. They have a guillotine there, used once in 1889, the only time a guillotine was used in North America.

St Pierre and Miquelon is definitely a pretty unique place, shows that even a place so small could have a history so rich. When the islands were finally resettled in French hands in 1816, they were resettled by Basques, Bretons, and Normans. That's why you see the flags of these respective groups on the unofficial St Pierre and Miquelon flag at 9:59 And regarding the maritime boundaries for fishing, I understand how they feel. Their EEZ literally looks like a bitten Dum-Dum lollipop! Going the tourism route is the right move.

Not really unique and definitely not rich history. The French and other Western European groups were claiming land as their own, killing and brining disease in the American continent well before 1816. Western European nations were at a very low point during those times with political instability, revolts and plagues. instead of fixing their own problems they brought their problems to a whole other landmass.

But the flag of the island is the one seen at 9:59. The City of St-Pierre has the same flag while Miquelon has another one for the Municipality. You will find a third flag flown on l'Île aux Marins which is a plain white flag with, on its center, two red foot marks. Saying the flag in unofficial as a national flag is the same as saying that California flags is unofficial for the flag of the USA. I've always wanted to visit St Pierre & Miquelon ever since I saw that weird little (FR) on the map in primary school, and especially since seeing some uniquely European cars driving around eastern Canada sporting French plates. I'm not sure whether I'd take the ferry or plane - the plane is far more convenient, but the ferry would be an experience in itself (mostly the connections on the NL side).

But it's their only reliable connection to any major city and having a direct flight to Paris in the summer really means a lot !

St Pierre and Miquelon fun fact: St Pierre was named such after St. Peter, the patron saint for fishermen. While Miquelon was named such by Basque sailor Martin de Hoyarçabal. Mikelon is the Basque version of Michael in Basque Country, so Miquelon is the French way of spelling Mikelon. While the Langlade part of Miquelon-Langlade comes from l'île à l'Anglais which means Englishman's Island

Well, THIS was an eye opener! Never through my school days was there ever any mention of this! That, or I just wasn’t listening….which is highly possible!🤣👴🏻 Great video as always Alex. You certainly stand out far above many others with your calm demeanour, avoiding putting false emphasis and hype into your descriptions, unlike DJs from a hyped up radio station or sports broadcaster! Greatly appreciated😊🍺🇨🇦

Very neat! Didn't know there was this French territory so close by until last year. Sounds like a quirky and interesting place, we have a travel agreement with Air Saint Pierre so I am definitely planning to visit when it warms up a bit. Also never flown on an ATR before!

Cool video! It's been on my list of places to visit and thinking I'll use points to get over from Vancouver and then paying for the flight from St. John's and then possibly taking the ferry back into Fortune. Great chance to load up on French wines and cheese!

I lived in St. John’s for 4 years and went to St Pierre three times and Miquelon once all by ferry. It’s a very interesting place and definitely feels like you are in Europe. Miquelon has far fewer people (less than 600) and feels much more remote than even St. Pierre does.

After just seeing your video dashing across Canada to Newfoundland and Labrador, I definitely thought you should visit St. Pierre and Miquelon. Now YT recommends me this video. Nice.

Fascinating! I had never heard of the place! And, I'm from Maine, which is not that far away. Thanks for a great video!

Saint Pierre looks just so beautiful, it's one of those special places that I would love to visit one day! I too agree on your somewhat unpatriotic remark about the Atr... It's soooo much quieter, comfortable and generally refined and sophisticated than the rugged Dash-8.
