Why Disney's "Wish" Flopped

Фильм және анимация

Basically, I watched this movie for you so you didn't have to. Gah, and I had SO much more to say -- from the nothingburger characters to the soulless song choices, to the overly merchandisable side kick -- but I'll settle for focusing on the weakness of the plot & some of my least favorite lyrics. Enjoy xo

This movie reminds me of that one line from Dance Moms where Abby says something like: "The best part was the ending...because it was over"

The song At All Costs would have worked if they went with the star boy idea, it was originally intended to be a love song .

What sucks is that in the art book, there were way better story ideas. Like the magical Star boy and both the king and queen were going to be a villain couple.

@@AmandaRiannClark can you imagine how fun it would be if we got an evil version of Gomez and Morticia Addams? We could have gotten a villain song as a duet.

I think another thing that was the downfall of Wish was Disney made Magnifico too human. They made a "villain" that was relatable to so many people because he was someone who had flaws, who had bad days, who cracked under pressure, who had mental disorders (PTSD, Anxiety). It makes me so mad that he was the villain because I felt that not only was it demonizing mental illnesses, but it was also enforcing the stigma that men should 'be a man' and not show any emotion and suffer in silence. I hate what Disney has become. There is no way Disney can convince me that he is the actual villain of the story. He was only guilty of being a flawed human being. He was being rational, logical, and responsible. Asha was a headstrong teenager (this trope is getting annoying super quickly) who thought she knew better than someone who lived in the real world, and turned the kingdom upside down because she was told no. She retraumatizes him by bringing the star down, making him feel threatened. Throughout the movie, I could physically see him having a panic attack. Nobody bothered to ask him how he felt, all they ever cared about was themselves. Asha, especially. I just... there was just so much potential for this movie. It was disappointing to say the least.

Not to mention they coded him as the lead by literally STARTING with his narrative? We’re led to believe that THIS is our main, sympathetic character, and the most reasonable one. D- execution to say the list

@@AmandaRiannClark Modern Disney movies rely too much on twist villains. The great thing about the villains in older Disney movies is that they weren't shy when showing why the villains are the villains. We knew Scar was evil by how he carried himself and by how he treated Simba. Ursula was upfront about her motivations: she wanted to rule Atlantica. Frollo was shown to be evil from the beginning, with one of the GREATEST scores and songs in the history of Disney. Jafar just looked like a bad dude. No way anyone is ever going to look at these villains and question if they're actually the hero. Also, how much did you hate the fact they brought back the 'lime green sfx = villain' trope again?

I have a question. Disney often gets criticized for queer coded villains, so how do they course correct while still creating a compelling character?

  • @alisonmicahtillery3814

@@ThePrincessCH I don’t understand the question. I never really noticed any of the villains being queer-coded. I just looked at them as the villain, and never really saw them as walking stereotypes of the LGBT community. I think it’s great that even if they’re villains, LGBT+ people have someone they can feel represented by, even if they’re not initially meant to be part of the community. In terms of course correction, maybe they could make a more ambiguous villain. One that’s not a walking stereotype of the gay community and one that’s not too masculine. Just a villain that’s somewhere in the middle. I think Disney nowadays is overcompensating for their past mistakes and making the male villains too stereotypically male. Gaston was a perfect example of this, but it was comical at that time. Too much testosterone, thinks that women should bow at his feet, loves hurting things smaller than him. I think Disney could die down on the extremes on both ends and just find a perfect balance between the two. Maybe make the character just queer enough to make people think if they’re gay, but have them also slightly straight. That way there’s no extremes and everyone whether straight or part of the queer community can feel seen.

If this movie had the original concept and the 2d animation, I would watch wish. I boycott disney now. I did it since the studio decided to continue to make more 3d movies(sequels with moana 2, frozen 3 and frozen 4), I was out. No 2d, no 1990s rennaissance formula, no more disney movies.

I'm a Star is ridiculous, it has NO PURPOSE besides looking cute for the trailers, is stretched absurdly and the moral of the song is NEVER AKNOWLEDGED. You know, the whole "everything is made up from stardust" saying. Never mentioned. But we had to have the goat rapping.

If they wanted to make a tribute to all of Disney history and didn't wanna bother writing a plot that makes sense, they could have made a Fantasia-like film. There are more merits to animation than telling a straightforward story, and they failed at both paying tribute and writing a plot.
