@Lil Rob There is a thin line in being critical and dumb and you are currently doing the latter. Turkey joining the Axis would mean one more enemy to fight for the Allies and vice versa. For the Axis, Turkey meant easy access to Caucauses and the support of the Turkic people inside USSR as well as a route to the Mesopotamia which was oil rich. For the Allies, Turkey meant a buffer zone between the Axis and the Allied colonies, a new frontier which was barely protected by the Italians and led straight into the heart of the German warmachine. The ingenius politicians and the strategists of that era didn't ask for Turkish support just because they found the Turkish culture exotic and then 100 years later a guy named Lil Rob comes and says that Turkey would have made no difference in the light of professional views. Well done.

Also Turkey had good relations with Greece. Yep you read that correctly. Greece being invaded by Italy made Bulgaria interested in reclaiming lost territory in Macedonia, but Turkey pretty much warned Bulgaria it would intervene and halted Bulgaria's war effort before it started. Eventually when Germany was about to intervene in the Balkans, Turkey was left with little choice but to back down not wanting to provoke Germany. Yet, even the fact they at least tried to stop Bulgaria from attacking us was something. Goes to show that nation relations are ever changing and we can be brothers with the Turks, no matter what our past or our governments have to say about that

History is interesting, but I always wonder what the world would be like if the Ottoman Empire didn't dissolve. It would probably be stronger than China and more wealthy than the rest of the world. Random: I also like to wonder what would've happened if Texas had rejoined the British Empire. While Texas was independent, they did in fact ask Britain if they could rejoin the empire but were turned down. Guess the Brits didn't want another colonial war if the US decided they wanted Texas back.

@Dod o They almost erased Ottomans from the history. Have you ever checked the Treaty of Sevres? It aimed to drove out Turks from Anatolia where they lived and ruled for 1000 years. It still remains as a serious trauma in Turkish psyche. Caused huge distrust against others. A regular Turkish citizen to this day believes that other countries still wants to carve up the motherland if they had the chance. And it is sadly true in case of Greece, USA, Israel, Russia, and Europe etc.... Because they support separatist Kurdish communist partisans, which are terrorist organisations which caused the death of thousands of civilians for decades in Turkey. Also, the British was the spearhead of the anti-Turk propaganda machine which aimed to change the public opinion on Turks around the Europe. I read it in a Swedish report about the history of anti-Turkism in Europe.

Actually a little bit like Sweden that could have used the Napoleonic wars to retake Finland and once again rise to be a major power but instead seems to have decided that Napoleon was worse and sided with Russia insted of fighting it. The resulting peace treaty kept Sweden away from the world wars. Although there seems to be a lot of people that doesn't like it since we didn't get to suffer as much as they did. Before this long time of peace Sweden fought a lot of wars and we did help in kicking out Napoleon, we fought a corrupt catholic church so I think that maybe we had done our fair share of fighting.

Turkey's reasons for staying out of the war are completely sensible. Imagine that you're a a relatively minor Euro/Asian power still recovering from a destructive war against the European powers just twenty years earlier and literally a century of mismanagement under the Ottomans and later Young Turks. Your economy has been hit hard by the Great Depression, your military is still largely using technology from WWI and the 1920s, with few tanks, planes, anti-aircraft weapons, modern warships, and almost no industrial capacity to produce weaponry on a large scale. Then, add to that the shock of watching the destruction of Guernica by the Luftwaffe in Spain, the brutality of the Japanese invasion of China, the devastation brought on by Mussolini's invasion of Abyssinia. And this isn't even the main show. This is only a fraction of the power of the Axis powers. 1939 rolls around, and you awkwardly sit there and watch as Hitler invades Poland. And not just invades, he absolutely annihilates Poland, with the Wehrmacht destroying entire Polish divisions despite their spirited resistance, with the Luftwaffe wiping entire cities off the map, the refugees are fleeing, everything is on fire. And before you know it, the Nazis are now scorching their way through Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Yugoslavia, Greece. France, your main ally on continental Europe, and the biggest powers in the world is toppled in like a month by the Nazis. Do you seriously think you'll be doing your people ANY favors by joining the war just because Britain, a country who you're not even sure how much you really like, wants you to join? Best case scenario is that you are rapidly defeated and maybe liberated God knows when. And you're not even sure if that's a best case scenario, because while you may want Britain, France and potentially America to come kick the Nazis out, you know more than likely, it's the Soviets who'll "liberate" you. And you saw pretty clearly what Soviet "liberation" looks like in Eastern Poland and Finland. Even if, by some miracle you hold your own and make it to the end of the war, your economy is destroyed, your country has been bombed to shit, and for what? So you can get some holdings in the Middle East and Balkans that you didn't even really want? The cost benefit analysis simply did not favor war.

Excellent analysis and summary. Not even the majority of Turkish people today are capable of understanding the points you have made and some are still pining after the "missed opportunity" of grabbing back the Aegean islands, parts of the Balkans and Middle East. All sensible people know that they're enjoying a phantasy version of history as Turkey would very likely end up with considerable territorial loss, regardless of which major power would be the "liberator". In the case of Soviets bringing "liberation", it would probably be parts of Eastern Turkey and the Straits, and in the case of the Allies, southeastern parts, possibly the Aegean coast and naturally the Straits. The economic hardships suffered by Turkish people during WW2 years and still remembered by the old generation and very often blamed on the leaders of that period, would simply be nothing compared with the type of suffering either the Axis or the Soviet sides would inflict on the country, had Turkey joined the war willingly or otherwise.

Actually not only Turkey but almost all countries in Europe tried to keep away from any conflict with Nazi Germany before the beginning of WW2. First Britain, then Soviets signed treaties with Germany. Turkey had a bit of luck since Hitler had to deal with other big countries before Hitler's arm could rich to it. However one shouldn't underestimate the political ability of Turkish president Inonu to carry out a state of art balance politics between the two sides of the war.
