@mechwarrior13
27 күн бұрын
@@StarDark4 how did you know i had an rx8 lol. Really depends on what shape the car is in when you buy it and what you plan on what you do with it. Daily driving should not be an issue, but expect leaks, its almost unavoidable. Have a drip pan with you if you park it for a while. Number one issue of course are the apex seals, and theres plenty of resources online for you to see before you make a decision. Otherwise expect horrible mileage, always smelling burnt gas/oil, dumping gas on shifts, buut a big smile on your face when you rev it out to 9k like you are supposed to, and it sounds so unique people will turn heads haha. Some people use rotary premix on every gas fill, still not sure if thats needed, but i did for peace of mind. And i really dont advise tracking it or prolonged heavy driving unless you are very mechanically adept.

My dad had a VR5 Jetta, eventually he got rid of it because of a seal that no one knew about, he took it to a local shop and they put a normal O ring on it but warned him to basically only drive the car to VW to get it properly sorted, the shop didnt even charge him. A couple kilometres later and a first party VW South Africa dealer had the car plugged in and had no idea what seal was needed, what the part number was or even where the seal was located before my dad pointed at where the other shop replaced it. They go back to search again and NO ONE can find this seal, it was a high temp seal of a specific dimension that apparently was not on any of the schematics VW SA had. So they call up VW Germany and they break out the full schematics and to fly in this small O ring would cost enough to replace a tyre on the car, for just this tiny O ring. A couple weeks later dad sold the car to some other dude through the shop that originally replaced the O ring, so at least they got some commission for their kindness.

He used the money from the 2.3l VR5 Jetta to buy a Polo with a 1.6l in it. To be fair to the Polo the Jetta was about 10 years old when it started breaking while the Polo is now 14 and it's had 1 issue so far, one tiny bit of plastic on the drivers side window control broke off. Oh and the 2 accidents but that's not the car's fault. My mom is fortunately not ruled by the mighty fuel economy rating and bought a BMW 320D, which is faster than 95% of the cars you see every day in South Africa. VR5'S sound amazing and are a tuners dream. Also, "vibration" wasn't an issue in vw. They counter balanced the crank and exhaust which eliminated any vibration. They were higher horsepower than the 4 and higher torque than the v6. Not to mention the extended durability of the vr5 vs v6. So not trying to rain on your parade but this was fairly incorrect. Also, the vr5 wasn't so much ended due to bad sales as it was extremely popular, but vw found it cheaper to move to a vr6 as it didn't require a counter balance weighting to the extreme vibrations of the vr5. Adding the 6th cylinder to the vr design greatly increased power and ran smooth. Due to this, it over took the 5 as the common vr design
It's ok, they sound absolutely heavenly while they're shaking themselves apart

I'm not trying to bust your balls, but it's not really a surprise that it is well balanced. Any engine over a certain power rating HAS to be well balanced well enough to function. It really doesn't take much vibration to cause serious issues. So the fact that it exists as a commercial motor means that it is pretty well balanced.
The "VR" is the abbreviation for "Verkürzter Reihenmotor"-"shortened in-line engine" in German. So it is actually an in-line engine in which the cylinders are not in a line but are offset from one another, but the engine still only has one cylinder head. That's why technically it's actually an in-line engine.
@DerFliegendeMocca

My '01 A3 1.8T i4 was definitely quicker but the n/a 2.3 VR5 has a lot of potential to be a real beast. Funny thing is there both 20v engines 4x5v and 5x4v

honda's v5 was pretty balanced for the time as they took an unbalanced v4 and balanced it by adding another cylinder. honda's reason was (for the time) that making a v5 turns out to be lighter than a v4. at the time when honda was racing, the rules had changed so that 4-stroke engines now have a CC cap at 990cc and 2-stroke capped at 500cc, so it made sense for most of the manufacturers to go with a v4 4-stroke engine. (no cylinder cap for 4-stroke I think) honda being the smartass that they are, realized a v5 was lighter because it occupied less cylinder volume than a v4 would. in theory that is. but there were alot of problems that they discovered, but i wont talk about it here, but i do recommend watching D4A's video about it.
The sound it made is still unmatched
