When my wife and I bought out second home, she said it was time to have adult furniture. So we went and priced 'adult' furniture, and I told her, 'No way! I think we could make those nightstands for cheaper.' She gave me some side eye. I said, 'OK, if they come out terrible, we will come back here and buy these.' Were they perfect? Not at all. Does she love them? Yep. So much so I made a matching dresser and bed frame. I don't run from my flaws so I named my business 'Imperfect Furniture'. I think the imperfections show the craftsmanship of a custom piece that you don't get with manufactured furniture.

Great video. Love hearing how people got started and the fear they have. Just shows I am not alone in my fears. Personally, I started in the late 80's when I took a woodshop class in HS. Made a bunch of things and my mom still has 2 of them that she uses to this day. Got into it seriously in the late 90's/early 00's. Built a bunch of stuff that is still in use today. Took a break for like 10 years, of course when KZread exploded, but getting back into it now.

My biggest challenge is selling. I usually give things away or donate them to art auctions at churches and schools. I had one lady that lost the auction on one of my pieces because her husband wouldn't let her go over $300, so I told her I'd make one for her, and she wanted to pay me $250. I told her if she paid for materials, that would be fine. I know I could make money with my products, but I just figure it's God blessing me with the talent and creativity, so I'm happy to share His bounty with others. The other challenge is no shop. Sort of like Drew in this video, my shop is a temporary set up. He's in the driveway, I'm on the back patio. Minimum 20 minutes to drag everything out of the shed and set it up, minimum 20 minutes for clean-up and stow away. And it's all weather dependent.

Les Cizek, a former successful business executive left his business in Florida to become a woodworker. He studied his craft under the late master woodworker, author and teacher James Krenov (A Cabinetmaker's Notebook) on the redwood coast of California. After he completed his study at the Krenov School Les gave a talk about his transition from business executive to woodworker. The story explained that essentially, he became a woodworker because he liked the clothes (that he saw woodworkers wearing.) Les also has a good sense of humor.

I have a very demanding full-time job that consumes about 65 to 70 hours of my time every week. But i still make time every day to get in my little 8' by 12' wood shop. After a long day of farm work, woodworking is my wind down for the day. When i get in my shop and get started everything else from the day be it good or bad is just pushed aside and I go into my own little world. Its my biggest stress relief and I've used it to help me stay sober for the last 5 years. The money i would be spending on my addiction, i save up and spend on my woodworking tools.
