Best explanation I’ve heard, He cut his ear off because while he and Gauguin were staying in Arles they watched a lot of the local bull fights. The tradition there is for the toreador to cut the bull’s ear off once it’s dead, wrap it in paper and hand it to a beautiful women. Van Gogh felt humiliated after taking the L in the brothel love story to Gauguin so, in a grand gesture, he removed his ear as though he were the defeated bull and gave it to a beautiful woman. Sounds a little out there until you hear about some of Van Gogh’s other exploits.

Sad thing is Gaugin and Van Gogh are not in even in the same league now. You deserved better, Vinny

Gaugin was an absolute jerk. Absolute. He was a horrible person who left his wife and many children to lead his life of debauchery. Van Gogh was truly at his mercy and when he slashed his ear - he actually did not cut off the whole ear. Van Gogh was truly an innocent who tapped the eye of the hurricane with his paintings.
