@@thebeegeessgreatesthitsand8128 Robin is my favourite male vocalist of all time. His voice just reduces me to tears with its clarity, tone, and beauty. The other one that is similar is Bobby Hatfield. Bobby, Robin, Maurice, and Andy left us all too early. RIP to them all.

The way Robin sang this song always pulled so much emotion out of me to the point of tears. It’s just that beautiful. No one could ever sing this song as genuine and heartfelt as Robin did. It’s a masterpiece. I wish I would have seen Robin, Barry and Maurice in concert. Simply magical.

Too me Robin was the best voice in the group. I liked all of them but his voice was so unique that I felt an ethereal quality to it something trancendent and sublime.

Yes that song always makes me cry, I had a problem with alcohol in my late twenties so as you can imagine the lyric “ I fell out of bed hurting my head from things that I said” never a truer lyric has been written. Happy ending I went to AA got sober and have been happily married for fifty years. Thanks Robin you where an angel.

@Steev Thompson I personally , tear up (and if I'm singing I choke up) when certain musical and vocal frequencies change something inside my head and my heart. I've heard that those frequencies are tapping into our "pleasure centers". Bee Gees are really good at that. That's probably why Rock-n-Rollers have trouble with their music.

Robin is my favorite of the Gibb brothers. Robin's voice was so unique to my ears. His has a different quality than the others despite the high vocals they all could hit. Robin's just hit me as more emotional, wistful.

Robin's voice is one of the prettiest I've ever heard. I love his voice

Robins voice was incredible. His voice as a 16-17 year old kid was magnificent. He could go from a low, rich, baritone vibrato to delicate, soaring high tenor (maybe even countertenor.) Just listen to the song “ I started a Joke”. Listen to the best quality recording with headphones. It’s an incredible performance- and he was 18. Unfortunately, his style went out of fashion and he wasn’t featured. But he also did the falsetto and quite well. The song “Love Me” is an example of a song where his falsetto is prominent at the end. I guess he was negatively affected by the falsetto criticisms and shied away from the falsetto, although his early 80s techno solo work featured his falsetto. He doesn’t get enough credit for one of the most amazing and talented voices of Pop/Rock of the late 20th century. With the right song, his voice was incomparably beautiful. It was often underutilized within the confines of The Bee Gees in their last 20-25 years.

I'm old enough to have been with this fabulous group from the very beginning. Love all three (and sweet Andy, too) but my heart has always belonged to this incredible man!

What happened ..John Travolta and Barry Gibbs high false at toe , skuse spe,ling ... they went along with the music marketing forces and in my opinion lost the real soul of their music with Robin as lead singer..but thats life and how the money making takes our mainline musical world ...very often souless... you have the same boring artists ..Ed Sheerum, Adel..Ed Sheerum..Adel ..its boring stifling the real creative musicians...zzzzzzzzzzzzz..its borrrrrrrring...

@@keithwigley1256 indeed. I think their flame-out period of ‘73-‘74, almost broke, living in the Isle of Man drove them to dedicating themselves to selling records. What choice did they have? That was their job. They had kids, wives and taxes to pay. But I don’t think they compromised their musical integrity one but. I think they had the BALLS to go R&B. I too was taken aback by the sudden change. But they captured a new generation of fans. I actually look at ‘75-‘77 as their most creative period. Main Course? Not a “disco” album. 2 great Country songs ( Robin’s vocal in Country Lanes is awesome) the rest blue eyed soul and Funk. Then Children of the world is Hard-driving, serious R&B. Not “Disco”. They pulled-it off. They were a great R&B band. Their side-men were the best. Richardson and Galutin, their producers ( like Mardin before them) were geniuses. It worked. But yes- Robins voice was a casualty. At least his single leads were.

Because Robin was an ANGEL. I met him outside of his studio in Miami Beach in 2002. Could hear him rehearsing inside--priceless. Singing for Robin was like breathing is for mere mortals. My favorite brother, RIP my Idol !!

The Bee Gees were one of the greatest groups of all time. People who only know them from their disco stuff (not that’s not great of its self)are missing out.

@@workingman-xl6xh I don't understand how "For Whom The Bell Tolls" did not get airplay in the US. I think it is one of their best, and I agree that Robin's vocal is stunning. It was a revelation to me when I found it about 15 years ago, when I started revisiting all the Bee Gees' music, and became a huge fan of Robin's in particular, buying everything he ever recorded in his solo career. I am just wondering where my CD is of his Christmas album. It's beautiful, too.

I have to say he got better looking as he got older. I love his voice. They all were amazing. I don't think I've ever heard better.

I think he was always sort of cute but as his style changed he got quite good looking.

I walk my dog past Robins grave every morning on my way to the water meadows nearby (that he owned and left open to the local public to walk in and enjoy) and I say 'Good morning beautiful person' every time I pass his flower filled last resting place..He was a special man and many people remember him with love

Mo ( Maurice)) said Robin’s voice was the “one that that touches your heart”. Natural talent. Mo can sing high and low as well.

What a voice Robin had. He had more of an operatic approach to singing those high tenor notes than either Barry or Maurice did. There'll never be another Robin Gibb. He's still sorely missed today.

His voice was so perfect. Tender, touching and vulnerable.

Phil - you can tell you are a music educator. Such intensity when you are critiquing the singers! Robin Gibb's voice was amazing!

One of the truly mesmerizing vocalists in rock history. He had a sensual and ethereal quality to his voice. I can't think of anyone alive today who could match those qualities.

Robin was absolutely amazing. His voice was sublime.

@@joycheek6756 no he didn't! Yes to the Hither Green train derailment in November 67 but he never suffered hearing loss. He covered his ear to hear himself overr the band. They didn't have the modern in ear pieces that came later on.

You are so right Fil, Robin's vibrato is so unique and controlled and not only difficult to copy but impossible. As you said, how to copy something that comes purely natural, and this applies to the three (four) brothers. Robin was someday asked why he never took classes to modulate his voice, and he said if he had took classes then it wouldn't be his own voice. Thank you for this great analysis!!!

He told a funny story about once meeting a stranger (on a plane I think) who he could tell recognized him but only after a while spoke to him just to say "I always thought you could have had a lovely voice. It's too bad you never learned to sing."

The Bee Gees does not get the honor they deserve! The Bee Gees were such great songwriters and their vocal and harmonies were fantastic! I loved them!

I would have to imagine that singing from such a young age as a trio helped all three brothers (and really Andy as well) develop their voices organically... and why it sounds so pleasing to the listener.

I've always loved Robin's voice but never realised how accurate he was.

He has a beautiful delicate tone. Some others have mentioned his faster (almost quavery) vibrato, which while really accurate gives that feeling of vulnerability and emotion. Just a lovely lovely voice.

Thank you for an analysis of Robin. The emphasis is almost always on Barry. I hope will do one of Maurice in the future too. This was a great choice of song. 💖

It's really hard for me not crying when listening to Robin Gibb's extremely sensitive voice. Magical! I sang this song myself from the age of 15, i.e. back in 68.

Robin Gibb had a voice like no other. It tugged at my heart and soul..so beautiful. i listen to it when i go for walks in the park. Thank you for sharing this take on it.

I enjoyed this so much, thank you. Some people refer to Robin's voice as the crying voice because the emotion is so authentic and raw. He's also extremely capable of making the listener cry (he's been making me cry for decades) because that voice goes straight to the heart. So unique and so beautiful....and I think if my heart could sing it would sound like Robin Gibb. Thanks again for doing this.

I always loved his voice more than the others. As you say such a vulnerable tone to it. Beautiful. But they were all phenomenal. They lived for a time very near to me, before moving to Australia, but I never knew them.

I would say Robin Gibb had total command of his fine motor skills.

Robin was perfect. He is unforgettable.

One of the best voices ever. What a talent.

Maurice Gibb said in their HBO documentary that their father used to get annoyed with Robin when doing his voice exercises. Their father told Robin to “…shut up, you sound like a bloody nanny goat…” I would venture to say his vibrato was natural early on and not necessarily a part of his emotions. Robin had the most unique voice. Yet, when he and Barry sang unison together, they sounded as one voice singing. Maurice mentioned that in the interview as well.

One of my favorite voices of all time. Always frustrating when I would mention this and folks would assume I was talking about his older brother and they would cringe showing judgement about the falsetto sound. No, I would say, not that brother. Then I would mention this song and Massachusetts for them to listen to. Great video, Fil. Thanks.

His older brother (& the 3 together) sounded excellent on all their studio material….& often live!! Others shouldn’t be so quick to judge by cringing…..& it’s how falsetto is sung. 🎼 Without those voices they wouldn’t have lasted as long as they did🤩!

I love Robin's singing. He kills it the song 'Alone' when he and Maurice chime in at the chorus after Barry's first verse. Thanks Fil, I'm just a guy who sings songs in my spare room alone and love your stuff. Lately Bee Gees are my thing after rewatching their One Night Only concert. And not afraid to go the falsetto.....Too Much Heaven is a classic.

My most Loved Robin song since it first came out. I was a teen at the time. It's just a beautiful song the way Robin sang it. I get emotional. Thanks for breaking it down.

Listen to Lamplight off the Odessa album. Robin's vocals will cause the expressed grief and sadness to manifest inside you. My favorite by Robin. Incredible. A piece of heaven.

We were so blessed in the 60s with so many unique singers. Robin’s voice cuts to the very soul, he was totally original and this song, more than any other of his, cuts at my heart strings. Robin was such a beautiful musician. His harmonies really are seckond to none.

Double awesome analyses! When I first listened to Robin’s solo “Holiday” in 1967, it was so simple, lyrically, but his unusual on-pitch voice stayed with me throughout the years. Thank you, Fil, for bringing us the confirmation that Robin’s voice really was truly a great voice.

@@tanyairwin3695 I know his name is Robin it was a typo, a human error that even automatic spell check did not pick up on.

i think one has to take into account how Robin's physical appearance contributed to his vulnerable presentation: he was so slender, not as robust as his sibs were; his buck teeth, his wispy hair -- all these and the quivery nasal voice made him unique and appealing.

@@amygracegarcia198 Agree!! Robin was strait up frigging Gorgeous!!😍 Even before he gained a bit a weight and had his teeth fixed, he still always had a certain 'beauty' to him!😉

This song laid perfect for his voice. The vulnerability in his voice is a huge part of his appeal. And you are so right, his emotion naturally comes out in his delivery. I think because Barry sang in falsetto so much during the late 70's, people assume Robin was doing the same at the same notes. His voice is naturally higher and he was often using head voice. You made such a good point that the richness in Barry and Robin singing together, whether in harmony or unison, was the melding of their different vocal characteristics.

I’ve heard him sing this song many times but this was perhaps the greatest ! Just perfection !

Fabulous episode. Robin has always been my favorite Beegees and “I started a Joke” my favorite song. I cry EVERY time I hear his unique voice. Your analysis has enriched my listening experience. Many thanks.

Lots of typical Robin vocals, very accurate and controlled, on their last album, This is Where I Came In. A unique voice. Great analysis.

If that voice doesn’t move you then you must be dead!! Genius. Most beautiful pure voice I’ve ever heard. Miss him so very much ❤

Robin’s quavering voice made him stand out from his brothers yet it harmonizes well when they sing together . Such prolific songwriters with a massive collection of songs from disco to country. Impressive indeed

His wife said that listening to Robin singing was like listening to the angels!!

The purest Gibb voice.

One of Robin's best performances is "Dearest" from Trafalgar... he just rips your heart out with that song.

Great song of Robin with his angelic voice. Glad to hear you'll gonna do Maurice's as well. Maybe then, listen to 'Trafalgar'. And on a song called 'Lovers', you would be able to pick out leads by all three of them in a very interesting song-creation! Their melted voices can be heared on songs like 'Lonely Days' and 'Blue Island'. So, so worthy to study your brilliant work, Fil!

'"LOVERS" is a freaking amazing song! I absolutely love it, and wish it would get more attention.

Such a heart wrenching and spot-on performance ~ will never be another group with the talent of the Bee Gees ~ brilliant vocalists, writers and musicians. They were the complete package with raw talent from the time they were tiny children

These guys were so talented. Particularly Robin, in my not-so-humble opinion. Always my favorite. Hard to choose a favorite from those guys because they all were just…perfect. You can do all The Bee Gees analysis videos you like. It’s perfectly fine by me!

That is an incredible performance by Robin! His voice is just so meaningful to me in an artistic sense. Very moving!

I always loved The Bee Gees. But I also thought Robin had the best voice of the three. It was so beautiful. Barry seemed he was more like screaming. The three together so awesome. So many people talk about the Beatles, but I think The Bee Gees were much much better. Just my opinion.
