I see it as how he views himself in certain situations. Pun pun is obviously human and everyone else sees him as normal, but he views himself as the the bird like drawing. In the moment he turned into the pyramid was he felt really low in himself, viewing himself as nothing but a simple triangle. I’m not sure if this makes sense it definitely makes more sense in my head

imo the way Punpun is drawn is a way for the author to give him a virtual identity. Depending on Punpun's life context or emotions, the way of representing him changes. He does not see himself as a bird, but is aware of the emotions represented by it.

I dunno if I'm sleep deprived and projecting. But I somewhat thought that it was less how he perceived himself and what he assumed others perceived him as. Kinda like how Seko describes himself as a "shady kid". Mainly because the changes later on seem to foreshadow his changes in behaviour (becoming more stubborn as he got bull-headed with horns). Kinda like he felt obligated to continue playing the roles he felt he'd been cast as. But given his low self confidence this distinction is entirely academic as his self-perception was probably effectively the same as his worst-case assumption of how others viewed him.

I read somewhere that it had something to do with the three stars in the night sky whose names I can't remember which was referenced in the first chapter where punpun's dad teaches him about astronomy. The three stars represent Punpun, Aiko and Sachi like a kind of love triangle...

The author makes a statement early on in the book. It says “ the tetrahedron is the most stable of all polyhedrons” this was meant to remind him that from the very beginning of the book the story was supposed to be a love triangle between punpun/aiko/sachi

it’s pun puns simplest form and the most secure shape as in a form hes hiding stuff away from people like how when they described his state as “cold” and another form of the simplicity of depression

The way I interpreted the triangle was it was a reflect of PunPun’s depression of his mundanity. He was living the most simple life and not in a fulfilling way. He barely did anything, he would go work his part time job, come home and eat. He was barely doing the things he needed to life. So I felt like the simple shape of the triangle was a reflect of his simple meaningless unchanging existence that he was living it

You deserve so much attention! Amazing content, sharp opinions and Nice editing. Well, I think that even If the author did not intentionally tried to change Pumpum's appearance to match his mental state, probably some unconscious factor may have influenced the form he took as he changed. And well, the three-sided pyramid is a sharp and angular figure no matter from where you look at it, and it clearly hides or 'closes' something inside itself. I also think it has the effect of fitting into other pyramids, which reflects Pumpum's clear desire to "fit in" and with other people.

I thought punpun was a pyramid because the triangle is the strongest shape, and although he was in a hard place, it wasn't the hardest he would be in, signifying multiple sides and ways that his pain is conveyed, giving punpun's pain dimension and turning him into a 3 dimensional triangle, namely, the triangular based pyramid.

Interesting theory! I think that’s pretty cool. The only problem with that is Punpun has severe self esteem issues so him thinking of himself as “strong” is impossible at this point. Theres also the fact he considers himself, Aiko also thinks so, strong later on in the story.

I think it shows Punpun blocking everything, walling himself from showing feelings and letting others in. Also from this point onwards Punpun changes forms constantly so its also the beginning of his decreasing mental stability.

  • @CalippoShots

The expression of the triangle, which reminds us to a pervert, made me interpret the whole thing as if punpun just got so goddamn depressed he was only able to see women as things to fuck. This has happened to anyone who has experienced a big depression or trauma, sometimes seeking validation in sex, not being able to experience any kind of love or feelings towards a person who you know you would have loved if you had met them before your depression. So the expression in punpun's triangle is this funny, pervy thing, but in reality what hides beneath it is just pure darkness and a big void that is close to a point of no return.

I always interpreted pun pun becoming a triangle as him losing his identity. He’s gave up his personality, his interests and his dreams and traded it for the monotony of a “regular” life in order to hide from his trauma and the horrible things he’d done in his past.

In geometry a triangle has the lest number of sides so i view that transformation as him viewing himself as a simple object to avoid any emotions rifts within himself (simce he had a break down in the previous ch before the transformation) a simple object cant have emotions , a simple obkect dosnt speak much , a simple object doesn't move thats how he views himself with depression a useless object and that resonates with me so much as someone who stopped viewing themselves as non-human as its easier to pretend to have no emotions that to acknowledge the constant turth abd dispair that things will never change

the same.. I've been in situations that I want to "turn off" my feelings.. become a thing, and it shows in the interaction with Sachi clearly. he wants to look and feel flat, then the shape changes back to the usual, thanks to her making him uncomfortable.. symbolism is used a lot by Asano. just finished Punpun 2 days ago and I need to at least write to a corner of the internet about my silly opinion just because.. thankful that these places exist tbh.

In the manga they said the tetrahedron is the most stable of all shapes, I think punpun turning into that is him bundling up all of his emotions and trying to appear as if he weren't a mess, so basically him trying to appear as a stable normal person to the world by not feeling anything

  • @syruptalk

tbh i thought it was a sort of breaking point for punpun and him turning into a pyramid was him transforming into something else but the fact he went back to normal so easily makes me think it might have not been??

i interpreted the triangle as a false sense of balance. if you pay attention to many of the panels where he is three dimensional, there is a light side, a dark side, and a medium gray side. this could be just simple lighting but i find it to represent all the good, evil, and gray inside of punpun. he tries to be emotionally balanced, and tries to not let too much out of any side. this ultimately fails

By that time in the manga he closed himself off and he was just going through the motions. Wake up, go to work, come home, sleep, repeat. He was in his simplest form, living his simplest life. No surprises, just surviving. Not living mind you, just surviving. It isn't until he gets complimented on his narrative story that he poofs back into the form that we have followed him through the entire time. Which is when you could say he re-found his purpose

I honestly don't believe when Inio states stuff like that in the interview. Of course some people might call this overanalyzing, but even if he just wanted to draw Punpun differently, HOW he drew him in each period of his life obviously has a thought behind it and resembles something in Punpun's nature. Like with the pyramid, it became very clear to me when he transformed to normal again. We literally see the pyramid open like it's made out of paper, and the normal Punpun falls out of it. That's why I very much agree with you that the pyramid symbolizes a state in which Punpun was the most closed off, not feeling connected to anything, until Sachi said a certain thing. I think all the metaphors on Goodnigtht Punpun are just too genius.
