Why Did Jesus Say, "By Myself I Can Do Nothing" (John

In John 5:30, Jesus says, "By myself I can do nothing." Muslim apologists point to this verse to show that Jesus can't be God. But what does Jesus mean? Perhaps we should read the verses that come before John 5:30 to make sure we aren't misinterpreting what Jesus said. David Wood goes through the passage.

@@Giorgi755 Fake news. Trinitarian lies. The title "first and last" mean two different things per their individual contexts. Christ is first and last in the context of his death and resurrection. (First to be raised and not have to die again. Last one to be raised by the Father directly as the Son will resurrect the dead henceforth) The Father's title first and last relates to his position as God. He is the archetype. The original God who wills into creation through his own power. Any other creators do so through the power derived from him.

@@romonejones5522 thank you ! What got me into this study is christians themselves honestly. I used to make fun of them online in the comment sections because “ all religions are the same “ and not a single one attacked me they all prayed for me with kindness . I’ve always wondered why christians pray for those who appose them , those who persecute them and even those who off them .. its against human nature, that was an inner peace that i’ve never seen in any other religion . Then i read the bible and saw how Jesus on the cross asked for forgiveness for those in front of him mocking him and causing him pain , and i understood why . Then i saw the disciples and the sudden change they experienced almost overnight and how they went from being scared and hiding inside a house to being brave and going out spreading the word of Jesus and laughing and rejoicing as they were being lashed and later offed ..what kind of faith is this ?!What did they see that made them shift like that ! Thats when i made it my mission to unravel this it doesn’t matter how long it’ll take , it took me 13 years of studying my previous religion to know that it was not the words of the creator, let alone his final words. Its a long journey that i’m willing to take , i travel back to my country (Iraq) just to get the physical books i need because i don’t have access to these kind of books in the country I’m living in. Jesus said : you search the scriptures for in them you think you have eternal life and these are they which testify of me . I’m doing exactly that i’m searching the scriptures, history books and even human biology ( for the crucifixion of Jesus ) and if my times comes before i finish this journey and God is real and christianity is the truth he’d know that my heart is in the right place and that i’ve spent the majority of my life seeking him truthfully and wholeheartedly and that i’m not in the seat of the scornful anymore. Sorry for making this super long my friend , it just feels good to know that there are people out there who will listen because such journeys tend to make a person feel alone in this world because the majority of people are worrying about what to wear what to buy and what car they want because we live in a silly materialistic world forgetting all about what’s truly important . Thank you all for your kindness which truly motivates me more , the image of Jesus is showing in all of you good people .

Quran (only scripture with 100% accuracy/preservation) says Allah is “Al-Ahad”(one/indivisible).Philosophically, It is impossible for 3 distinct perfections to exist simultaneously. Father (Perfection 1/distinct1) =Son (Perfection 2/distinct2)=idolatry.This is due to addition of two extra perfections that are Co-equal/Co-eternal&distinct with Allah(the most Exalted). Not just the Quran, but also the old/New Testament textually establish tauheed(monotheism). So, then why believe in trinity and associate two imaginary parts to Allah(one/indivisible/Self-Sufficient/All-Loving)? How could your love/worship be undivided/exclusive for Allah(the most Exalted) when there are two other equally unique/perfect entities to adore? The verses of bible used by trinitarians are extremely vague and require hard interpretation to extract the understanding that Father/Son/Holy Ghost are Co-equal/Co-Eternal&distinct.

@@bluesky45299 It’s sad that you have been lied to about the perfect preservation of the Quran(s). Many Muslims think that there is only one recitation of the Quran that all Muslims use today - the Fahd Hafs recitation. Hafs Quran is used by 94% of Muslims, but there are many other texts (Warsh, Al-Duri, Hisham, Qalun, etc.) that minorities recite. They have variant words and additional/missing words. The quotations of the Quran in the Hadiths do not match the current Hafs Quran. The most ancient manuscripts of the Quran do not match the current Hafs Quran - even with the obvious later ‘corrections’. And we know from the classical Islamic scholars that there were very different Qurans recited by the Sahaba and their students. Let me assure you that Christianity is monotheistic. Worship should be directed to the one true creator God. Christians do not “associate two imaginary parts to Allah”, as you claim. The Father is real. The Son (Jesus) is real. And the Holy Spirit is real. Unlike you, I find the deity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit revealed in both the Old and New Testaments. Three persons are identified as the one God. It does not change any fact about God if, philosophically, you have a difficulty in understanding his trinitarian nature. God does not have to conform to our limited minds and fallible reasoning. We must get our understanding of God from what he reveals of himself in the scriptures. And he reveals himself as one being - the supreme, self-sufficient and sovereign God - and as three distinct persons who are eternally and equally that one God.

@@bluesky45299 So if the quran is 100% accurate, then that means allah is "the best deceiver", but you muslims don't like that part, do you? Not to mention how allah "made" it appear that Jesus died on the cross ,therefore, he, in your own religion, created a false religion by your own beliefs that is now by your own beliefs leading people to hell. What a logical thing to follow a cosmic deceiver. And what is the sentence every muslim says? "may allah guide you". Oh, but your own quran contradicts that, doesn't he? It litteraly says "allah does not guide the unbelievers". But you also don't like that part too, right? And since the quran is 100% accurate, and the quran also says the bible is the word of allah, then that means the Bible is scripture. "But it's corrupted!", ah, ah, ah. Nope. Your quran says allah's word cannot be corrupted. Good job! We have successfully passed the quran, and after all the examination, we have concluded that it's a book by satan himself. Idk about you, but i will stay in Christianity, and i will follow the triune God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who work in love and harmony, having no mistakes. Being Love itself, of course God has to be more than one person. It wouldn't be love without another person.

The earlier idols (false deities) were statues erected of pious people of previous generations. These people were later wrongly prayed to and taken as deities. These type of misguided beliefs of taking humans as deities or gods exist in pagan and polytheist religions, past and present. A human taking another human as a deity or God is falsehood. It makes absolutely no sense for a human to pray to (worship) another human. Deity Incarnation where a human is believed to be a deity or God coming down in this world as a human is among the misguided claims in pagan and polytheist religions, past and present. Claiming a human is God manifest as a human is among the misguided claims in pagan and polytheist religions. Claiming a spirit in a human is a deity or God is among the misguided claims in pagan and polytheist religions. Claiming God having sons or daughters is among the misguides claims in pagan and polytheists religions. All that I mentioned about idolatry, pagan and polytheist religions you can look it up online including from their own sources. The misguided belief of taking Jesus as a deity or God is against what Jesus himself believe and taught. It is against what all the guided prophets that include Noah, Abraham and Moses believed and taught. It is against the foremost of the religion which is the first and foremost commandment. Abraham did not pray to Jesus which is a man's name. Abraham did not pray to three persons. God is not a human God created humans As great a human Jesus is, he still is human.

The Abc’s of Salvation A. - Admit you are a sinner in need of a Savior: Romans 3:23-26 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. B. Believe in your heart that: John 3:16-17 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. C. Believe continued: 1 Corinthians 15: 1-4 15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: C: Call - Confess: Romans 10:8-14 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? The result : Romans. Chapter 5: [1] Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: [2] By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. [3] And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; [4] And patience, experience; and experience, hope: [5] And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. [6] For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. [7] For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. [8] But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. [9] Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. [10] For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. [11] And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. [12] Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: [13] (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. [14] Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. [15] But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. [16] And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. [17] For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) [18] Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. [19] For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. [20] Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: [21] That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. And last but not least Eph.2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

I addressed such a topic with a Muslim on another channel and believe my answer will help with the understanding also: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” Phillipians 2:5-8 At the close of the great controversy between God and Satan everything will be brought into subjection to the Son of God; the saved as well as the wicked will acknowledge the love and justice of God (Phil. 2:10, 11). Cosmic harmony will be a reality, the goal of the plan of salvation will be achieved, and the Son will hand over the kingdom to the Father. God had entrusted to Him the responsibility to restore the human race to its original state of perfection; and the Son, through the redemptive power of His blood, accomplished the task (cf. Col. 1:19, 20). Everyone will be under submission to the Son. It is this redeemed world that Jesus gives back to the Father. Now even the Son is subjected to Him. The kingdom of the Son, so to speak, merges into the cosmic kingdom of God . This subordination of the Son refers to a functional submission and not a description of inner-Trinitarian relationships (cf. John 1:14; 17:5). As God-incarnate the Son voluntarily submitted Himself to the Father (cf. Matt. 26:39), He was enthroned in the heavenly temple as Savior and King, and He is mediating for us in the heavenly sanctuary (1 Tim. 2:5). At the end of the cosmic conflict the exalted Lord will place Himself under the Father. God will be the sovereign Lord of the universe. Notice that the passage does not say, “that the Father may be all in all,” but “that God may be all in all.” As part of the Godhead Christ participates in the absolute sovereignty of God, but as the incarnate God He continues to voluntarily submit to the Father. This means that throughout eternity Jesus will remain human. Redeemed humanity voluntarily submitted to God, and now Jesus, who belongs to that humanity, will do the same. That submission is part of His eternal sacrifice on our behalf. He emptied Himself so entirely that, in becoming the Saviour of the world, he did not set himself forth in a way to make himself prominent or to draw attention to himself. “For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.... And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ glorified not Himself to be made an high priest; but He that said unto Him, Thou art My Son, to-day have I begotten Thee. As He saith also in another place, Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchisedek” ( Hebrews 5:5-7) This can also give understanding why Jesus is not going around saying the favourite words of a Muslim “ I am God worship me” He emptied Himself so entirely that, when He had come, he could truly say of Himself: “I can of Mine of self do nothing.” John 5:30. To men he says: “Without Me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5. And of Himself He said: “I can of Mine own self do nothing.” This shows that He so entirely emptied Himself that, in this world, He was of Himself just as helpless to do righteousness as is the man who is without God. And, accordingly, He could truly say: “The Son can do nothing of Himself” (John 5:19); and, “I do nothing of Myself.” John 8:28. ( remember Jesus is showing to the universe that humans can be made righteous with God’s help, if Jesus had access to anything that we cannot have then the plan of salvation would have failed)

Jesus deity Jesus left his deity in heaven, and humble Himself, and became a man according to Philippians 2 ! He operated in the fullness & power of the Holy Spirit according to John 3:34! He could not judge he did not know the end times only the father did, and he had to learn obedience says Hebrews 5:8 ! What great humility he had for us, to die for our sins! Even when he’s called “good teacher“ he said “nobody is good, except God” pointing to God the father, and pointing away from himself at the same time ! Why did Jesus have to get alone & pray to God all the time ? If he’s God, he wouldn’t have had to do that! Now everything makes sense ! Jesus is Lord of all, The second person in the godhood, and received his deity back in heaven ! After his resurrection, there’s power in the name of Jesus, he said that himself in several verses!

@@annemurphy9339 "But He did make Himself temporarily a little lower than the angels by taking in human flesh." Being made a “little lower than the angels” and taking on a body eternally did not in any way diminish the deity of Christ. Jesus never ceased to be God; He simply showed the meekness and condescension of God. After the Incarnation, He was the God-man. *- I was formulating a response, but this one from GotQuestions answers it far better than I could. I'll copy the full response from the website, which I wholeheartedly agree with -* Psalm 8:5 is a prophecy about Jesus Christ. As the psalmist reflects on the glory of the Lord, his mind turns to the greatness of God’s creation. He also begins to think about man and asks this question in Psalm 8:4: “What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” (ESV). Then verse 5 reads, “Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor” (ESV). (In the Hebrew text, “heavenly beings” is Elohim, a common name for God; the Septuagint has the word angelos, which means “angel.”) Psalm 8:6 continues, “You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet” (ESV). The psalmist understood from Genesis 1:26-28 that God gave mankind the authority to rule over the created world. The title “son of man” could refer to Adam as the head of the human race. Being created with a human body and given this authority, Adam was made “a little lower” than the angels, yet he was crowned with glory and honor because he was made in the image of God. In Hebrews 2:6-8 the writer quotes Psalm 8:5 and then comments on the totality of creation’s subjection to the “son of man”: “In putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control” (ESV). Then the author of Hebrews identifies the “son of man” as Jesus Christ: “But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone” (verse 9, ESV). Applying Psalm 8:5 to Jesus Christ, the writer of Hebrews applies the title “son of man” to Jesus. This stresses the humanity of Christ and his tie to the first Adam and sets Him apart as the greatest example of man. Jesus Christ is really the Second Adam, the new Adam, who has come to deal directly with what the first Adam brought upon mankind and could never defeat, namely death (see 1 Corinthians 15:45). The Gospel of Luke’s theme is that Jesus is the Son of man (see Luke 19:10); Jesus is the Second Adam come to deliver mankind from death, through His cross, burial, and empty tomb. Also, by taking upon Himself sinless flesh in the Incarnation Jesus was made “a little lower than the heavenly beings.” Jesus “made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” when He took on human flesh (Philippians 2:7). The Lawgiver placed Himself in subjection to the Law (Galatians 4:4). He who was rich became poor for our sakes (2 Corinthians 8:9). “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). Angels marvel at the Incarnation and desire to look into the gospel (1 Peter 1:12). Being made a “little lower than the angels” and taking on a body eternally did not in any way diminish the deity of Christ. Jesus never ceased to be God; He simply showed the meekness and condescension of God. After the Incarnation, He was the God-man. As a result of His atoning work on the cross, Jesus was crowned with glory and honor, and He is now seated at the right hand of His heavenly Father (Colossians 3:1). The author of Hebrews points out that Jesus’ humble state was but temporary: “for a little while” He was made lower than the angels (Hebrews 2:7). Jesus is exalted above all angels, and some day every knee will bow at His name and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11). Believers in Christ will reign with Him in the future, glorious millennium. Christ will subject all things to Himself as the Second Adam. What the first Adam and his descendants failed to accomplish because of our sin (cf. Hebrews 2:8), the last Adam will accomplish, and the curse will be reversed (see Isaiah 65:17-25). All believers will share in Christ’s glory forever, living with Him in His new heaven and new earth. Without Jesus becoming “a little lower” than the angels, there would be no redemption for any of us. Praise the Lord that He humbled Himself to come to us and seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10).

@heuehbddjjxifrhehjz1978 How on earth do those first two contradict? Are you actually reading what you're typing? Jesus is saying what the first and greatest commandment of the Torah is. Paul is saying what's most important for him to tell the church at Corinth. You do know that Jesus hadn't even died yet when he said that, right? Try to read in context. Jesus is being accused of overturning the Mosaic law, meaning don't follow it, which he is not. Paul, says Jesus has abolished the law against believers when he was nailed to the cross, meaning we are no longer under condemnation, bringing together both Jews and Gentiles. Some translations say "record of debt." See verse 18 and Col 2:14 in context. Nobody will be justified by the law because everyone has broken the law. Paul's point is that we are justified by God's grace. If Jesus meant that you have to keep the law perfectly and don't need God's grace, then why would he forgive sinners? They've broken the law. See Matthew 9. Also, notice that Jesus says "and teach men to do so." So breaking a single commandment doesn't automatically make you least. If your first three sets of verses aren't contradictions, why would anyone think the rest are? Actually try to read these verses in context instead of just taking snippets and putting them side by side.

@heuehbddjjxifrhehjz1978 "For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He was seen by [a]Cephas, then by the twelve. 6 After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have [b]fallen asleep. 7 After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. 8 Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time." Does it sound like Paul is trying to teach us what the most important commandment is? Then how can he be contradicting Jesus? I meant that Jesus hadn't died when he (Jesus) said that. So Paul is preaching something that wasn't even true when Jesus said that. That's not my interpretation. If it's a contradiction, then what commandment is Paul trying to say is the most important? Paul did meet Jesus and he testified to it. You think Paul believed people don't have to follow the law? "But in accordance with your hardness and your 1impenitent heart gyou are 2treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who h“will render to each one according to his deeds”: 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and ido not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness-indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew jfirst and also of the 3Greek;" "I say then: uWalk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For vthe flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, wso that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But xif you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now ythe works of the flesh are evident, which are: 4adultery, 5fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, 6murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that zthose who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." Paul's talk about not being under the law means they aren't condemned by the law. It has no power over them. They are under grace. Those who are under the law will perish because they don't have God's grace. Yeah, Paul had a different audience from Jesus and the twelve. Jesus and the twelve's ministry was to Israel, while Paul's ministry was to the Gentiles. There's no contradiction. Paul never taught original sin. That's a myth that started with Augustine, not Paul. Of course Jesus never said you must believe in his death because he wasn't dead yet! How can he expect people to believe in something that's not true? The church didn't even exist until the book of acts. Paul preached repentance of sins as well as belief in Christ. "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, awho 1do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit." You still think Paul taught that all you have to do is believe? I replied to the first three you mentioned. I didn't pick the ones that were easiest to reply to. I just don't feel like writing an essay. Instead of engaging with my responses, you just deviate to completely different texts. All you're doing is pasting verses side by side instead of actually trying to discern what they mean in context.

I have no Muslims in my life right now. I didn't know that this chapter is the Muslims' go-to in 'disproving' Christianity. I was just reading these verses as I'm studying the title "Son of Man" & it significance. I did pick up on Daniel 7 & that Jesus connected the "Son of God" to the "Son of Man" as one in the same, but I knew nothing about Muslims distorting this chapter. Thank you for the eye opener. I'm sure the LORD will bring me along the path of a Muslim in the future & this will help.
