Jay, I appreciate all that you do, you have pushed me to not be as lazy and think about what settling. I won’t be operating at the level that you are pushing through but I had components that were serious weak points in my system and one of them I asked you about which were a pair of Vandersteen Quatros and your response was, they are decent, but not reliable and what you said couldn’t be more right. Much too often in this hobby we associate our own identity and happiness with a brand and form brand loyalty. I luckily will cut ties when I’m not getting what I should and your channel explains why that is so important as you have no loyalties with any brand. With Vandersteen I stuck around a little longer than I should, but my experience now matches yours Jay of not being as reliable as they should be. You are only pushing for the truth through the experience of many brands of ownership. No dealer can offer you that. After replacing two subwoofer plate amps and a driver and just not really being happy with them, I should have never bought them after my experience with my Vandersteen 2ce 2 signatures and 2 2wq subs. The subwoofer amps went on their own, the busted driver went when the right channel of the amp died. The owner of the Vandersteen Quatros before me replaced a bad left driver and he traded them in on a newer pair. I sat on that pairing of the 2ce signature 2s for four years and I was miserable. Changing cables and whatever I did just didn’t do it and that’s not to say I couldn’t get them to sound good, just not great and not a visceral experience. I just couldn’t get the Quatros that I traded up to from the two Vandersteen subs and 2ce signature 2s to sound great in my space even with Acoustic treatment, so I finally got up the courage to believe in my own ears, not the dealers, friends or my wife and I let the Vandersteens go, no more crossovers when switching amps, no more thinking about changing batteries in those crossovers, none Nadia and done. The Vandersteen 2wq subs were terrible and I never got the volume or performance I needed out of them even with the 5hp crossovers and upgraded lithium battery. My amp, the Audio Research DS 450, a class D amp by them, which I wondered why they didn’t repeat, was too lean sounding and didn’t grip the drivers on the Vandersteens or other speakers that I tried and finally a right channel blew and took out two pairs of speaker’s right channels drivers, including the Vandersteen Quatros and a pair of Bowers and Wilkins bookshelves, ouch and ouch. I was later told by the dealer that this happened to another customer and almost caused a fire. That amp won’t be back from service until mid June and that was over a month and a half ago. I have also had an Audio Research VT 100mkiii (tubed) and it was a great sounding amp and admittedly used it nicked and dimed me with parts and service. I have also seen others amps come back for minor things, it come back. AR makes great sounding amps, it their reliability is beneath McIntosh, even though their products are more detail sounding. I’m done with this route as well and won’t be buying anymore Audio Research amps. The preamp, CD player, Dac all Audio Research have been problem free and I will keep them. I will have to pay for the repair of the DS450 and I have no problem with that, it’s been out of warranty, but I have already traded it through the dealer and bought the Simaudio 400m monoblocks, so The Audio Research is gone and at this point, I will gladly pay for that bad memory to be over. I don’t fault the dealer for none of this as I should have listened to my inner me and just said no. The dealer has been great and I was loaned some great equipment to listen to at my home and that experience is invaluable. Jay you once said if you are shopping on a budget look at Simaudio’s Evolution series. WellI didn’t exactly make it there all of the way, but I did get a pair of Simaudio 400m monoblocks, Class A/B, which fixed everything that was wrong with the Audio Research DS450 ,grip, control, finesse, low profile design and class A power for the first 10 watts and based on the evolution series of old. For speakers I will be auditioning many and that search has begun and Magnepans 1.7i maybe even 3.7 are on the list, but the wife will probably win the battle of the 3.7 not coming home due to size. I will be looking for a component sub or subs for the Maggie’s if I pull the trigger and I have three subs in route to my house. I have owned Maggie 1.6QR in the past and I never had the problems out of them that I had out of the Vandersteens and I never enjoyed the Vandersteens although good and they sounded great at the dealer’s showroom, I never forgot that Maggie sound, but I haven’t made a decision yet. Jay I thank you and your channel for making me think about The Who, what and why. I’m not bad mouthing Vandersteen and they make great sounding products, but just not for me and not on my dollar. It is not about pleasing your dealer or what sounds good at a show, but what sounds good in your listening room with your ears and if it doesn’t sound quite right at a dealers show room, forget potential, leave it right where it is. I have been allowed to try great sounding gear by a great dealer and this latest purchase was no exception as I have had the Simaudio 400m for over a month and I have enjoyed every day with them. I have been in this hobby for over 30 years and I have only been happy, really happy three times regardless of money spent and these Simaudio 400m are one of those times, so I thank you for encouraging me and others to think outside of themselves and be honest with themselves with what they are trying to achieve. Keep going and growing Jay, it’s guys like you are in the position financially to have the patience to continue to teach us old dogs and potential new dogs, “New Tricks”.

I'm looking forward to the next speaker - but I will miss the M6's, yes, ruthless, revealing - admittedly, even I could afford them, they're certainly over my head- - one thing came through during they're journey in Jay's lab, those f'ing speakers are the most coherent dynamic driver type speaker that I've ever heard over You Tube - - I could never detect the sound of "multiple drivers" and in the context a speaker of that size with all those drivers, the coherency they present is, in my opinion, practically unbelievable - - - thanks for brining them to us Jay.

Very good point on warranty issues returning to Magico. At the price point should be more Accommodating. No Grill is a problem too i have been considered S1 i always liked the idea of Q1. But haven’t heard any in live settings. I love the M2 and all M series but can’t afford that range. Was hoping they came out with a M1 2 way stand Mount. I have smaller listing area but love the Best minus the below 30hz stuff. S1mk2 ? Wilson I admire but have always not a fan of the constant model changes and you’re Purchase of maybe 2 years ago becoming Obsolete with no upgrade path. Look At YG speakers most models are upgraded from the earliest to Present and have heard a few at Shows the Carmel is Fantastic speaker.

Interesting reasons to churn gear. Not sure how much satisfaction anyone can get when one is always looking for the next latest and greatest. Depends I guess on the budget...but even so, seems like a rabbit hole that can lead to ultimate dissatisfaction with the hobby, and therefore an exit from it. Perhaps, like most of us, as a'philes we are always seeking the 'absolute sound'..and thereby always just a few steps away. Personally, I think the room has the biggest impact of all...and looking at your room, that is where I would still expend funds. The BIG screen in the background would be a place to look at...and then the ceiling, etc.

This is going to be a lengthy comment! Hopefully it will not ruffle feathers! I am really happy that you are investing on room treatment, getting a little bit serious about the effect of room treatment. The amount of money you have invested just on gears / equipment, if for a change, you allocate 25-30% of the total budget to room treatment, I guarantee you will enjoy listening a lot more to whatever gear you will have at that time. No matter how expensive or latest and greatest your equipment are, you are listening to your room. So why not take care of the room that will remain constant regardless of the rotating audio gears! I am pretty sure, five years from now, when you get a chance to reflect on this incredible journey, you will have a nice smile knowing that you took care of your listening room to make the hobby and your journey a lot more enjoyable :))) And thanks for doing everything that you do for us the followers/watchers!

The bottom line, sounds like the Magico are overpriced by about 55k sure the other components matter but let's keep it real, Jay is using some of the best equipment I have ever seen, I highly doubt that adding a few tweaks and changing some fuses will make a dramatic difference. Seems like Wilson is the better choice, I cant wait to try the Alexia 2.

You said you failed at AC line conditioning! Do you really believe those high end audio amps like the Gryphon, Boulder, Dan D' Agostino, Pass Labs, Constellation, and Audio Research would benefit from an AC Line Conditioner like a Audioquest Niagara 7000 or Regenerator Power Plant like a PS Audio P20? Aren't these $$$ high current amps designed to accommodate AC power fluctuations? You live in a house and not an apt. so wouldn't AC power be cleaner by not sharing circuits with your neighbors and, therefore, not require an expensive AC upgrade accessory for better sound, imaging, dynamics?
