The quality of the musical signal coming out of the source component defines the ultimate ability of a hi fi system. Hi everyone, I'm seeking some unbiased opinions. I currently own Sonus Faber Amator III speakers and have two options available to me. The first is a Gryphon Diablo with a built-in DAC, priced at 100k NOK from the dealer, which I'm considering. The second option, from another dealer, is an older Diablo 250 with RIAA but no internal DAC. However, it comes with an AURALIC ALTAIR G1.1 streamer/DAC and Nordost XLR cable for 70k NOK, making it the cheaper option. My question is: in terms of pure sonic performance and synergy with my Amator III speakers, which amplifier would be better? Would the older but more powerful Diablo 250 outperform the newer technology Diablo 120, or vice versa? I understand that in terms of pure synergy, the Gryphon Diablo with the built-in DAC might be superior, but it comes at a 30k higher price tag

Jay.. it would be beneficial to add the topologies used in these amplifiers for the output stage since it affects the character of the sound. Bipolar, MOSFET, VFET, etc… This would help narrow down the type of sound some are looking for. Many of these boutique brands are a mystery when it comes to details of the design. I enjoy the wide variety of amps and other equipment you review and discuss. I don’t have access to most of these brands locally and haven’t been to a hi-Fi show in many years, so it’s nice to see this gear in a user environment. Thanks!

Jay you have been stellar with featuring Gryphon, the premier Danish amp manufacturer. Everyone, there is a simple reality regarding hi end components. It's far easier to package American brands ( USA & Canada) than European brands to make a deal for a new purchase. Again, this truism applies to high end. European amps, speakers, cables, dacs all sell well new, but their value doesn't hold compared to american lines. This is due to the fact that high end dealers carry three times as many american brands as they do European.

Great channel just subscribed, I would really like to hear your thoughts on ASR Emitter along with some Tenor Amps. It would be really cool if you could have some videos on setting up good budget systems for people getting into this hobby
The title of this video scared the hell out of me, i thought there are some serious issues that the gryphon might have. The Essence stereo and preamplifier is the gear i am going to buy.
Stepping into 2022 it’s funny how this video relates to the new Gryphon Mephisto Solos you now own and the Wilson XLF you just removed and replaced. We never really know the future.
Thanks Jay for bringing all the Gryphon amps in your cave😊 Now its time to move on into the new chapter like Soultion 7 series or Lamm Industries or Audionet or Burmester to bring. Happy listening.🤘
Thanks for the Gryphon round up, I’ve been looking forward to it. It did take me a bunch of videos to figure out that the thing that looked like an air purifier was actually the Colosseum 🙂
its amazing how much time of your life you could save if you watch yuoutube videos in 2x the speed! Get the point twice as fast and get the point sooner, then move on! thank you Jay

sounds like you can best Bi-amp with the Mephisto on the bass?
Thanks so much for everything you do jay. you definitely get to play around with a level of equipment that i just dont think i get to ever afford. love the reviews and opinions im really impressed that you have strong opinions i often lament that when i go into a poorly run audio shop the guy there may as well be the netflix algorithm and dont really challenge me as a consumer. was wondering if you listened to the musical fidelity titan monoblock back when they were floating around. i never heard them but had that stereophile mag with them in there and was pretty in love at the time!!

I use 3 x Theta Citadel for the front channels of my theater set up. They are desktop computer shaped. Have to say, I'm impressed with them driving my Dunlavy SCV's. No complaints for the price.

Thanks!

Agreed, The engineering of the amps is generally left as a mystery, they are always opened up but no gain stages or output devices are shown. It's like talking about clothing and how it feels and looks but never talking about the material used to create the garment.

Hello Jay, another terrific review of the Gryphon line. There is absolutely nobody who has done the sort of careful listening that you’ve done and then tried it with many top notch cables. I will never forget the Essence monos and the Magico M6 combo, wow! That was such a great combo, and for me, one of the best on your channel. Thanks for all the hard work in bringing to us this out there magical gear that the majority of us will not be able to afford, unless one of us wins the Lottery! So thanks a million for bringing us cutting edge gear, and pairing it up with other super quality gear. You’re the best Jay. Take it easy, and keep up the good work.

Jay, can I suggest a series on Jeff Rowland products? I'm curious to hear your take on JR after hearing the Gryphon, Boulder, and Pass Labs gear. Also, how about a review on some of Legacy Audio's top speakers with DSP, like the Aeris, V, and Valor systems? Again, I'd love to hear your thoughts compared to your Wilson's and Magicos. Try Nagra, Audio Note and Spectral.
Go for the music
What I am hearing is that all of these extremely expensive components sound different. If the ideal is the "straight wire with gain" goal, then these systems fail. In a blind test where the price tag that gives you boasting rights is hidden, I'd bet there is a $20,000 system that sounds just as good as a $500,000 system.
Time for an Apex and Commander
Thomas and Stereo for the Hi End.
MBL!?!
AudioNet Stern and Heisenberg!!
To me, Gryphon is not my end game system. It just sound “unnatural” to me. I will be happy with a FM Acoustics Pre/amp set, even their entry level is musically more satisfactory than Gryphon or other big names out there
