Apples to oranges. 1 watt equals 3.41BTU/hr. So a 5,000W electric is roughly 17,000 BTU/hr not 30,000. The entire comparison is in question.

another advantage of electric is you don't have to plumb it and vent it and you don't have to worry about flammable vapors being ingnited if you are using paint and chemicals in your shop.

It doesn't even cross my mind to hire somebody so the install costs are not that different when you do it yourself. Plus someone gave me a free gas heater.

This is exactly what I wanted to see a video on . I got 60k investment (installed) heat pump / propane heat and AC investment. AND $5000 (installed) for electric wall units. That was a dilemma. But I will still go with wall heaters

Especially on how often you need to heat your garage, how well is your garage insulated, where you live, if permits are required, the initial cost of installing gas (gas line+flue+electrical) vs electric (electrical), and how much per KWh your electric provider charges in the winter months, etc…

Everything you said makes perfect sense. I came to the very same conclusion and was pleased to see someone else who had done the same. The venting for the gas unit is a also headache and adds cost. Also, breathing air that is heated with electricity is much more pleasant than by gas. Thanks for a great video and for sharing your thoughts.

Overestimates both gas heater price, and possibly installation cost, by possibly 26% to 37%. First, Modine 30000 BTU/hr gas heater sells for $945.30 on Amazon and $1029 at Home Depot...not $1300. (Even cheaper nonvented options exist in the $300-$600 range, and of course nonvented models are cheaper to install.) Not sure if his figures incl tax or installation because he doesn't break the gas numbers down, and this is why I vary the 26%-37% range. Second, a 30000 BTU/hr gas heater is equivalent to 8800 watts electric, not 5000W which he uses for his numbers. Does not necessarily mean electricity costs will be higher though, as a more powerful heater runs less often in its duty cycle. But these two machines are not equivalent, and this should be noted (1 watt = 3.41 BTU/hr). Conclusion: it's entirely possible true costs could be recovered in 5 years or less, not 7 as he states. And unless you sell your house after those few short years, electricity becomes more expensive, even by his calculations. And with gas there is no long-term vulnerability to the risk of electrical rate increases due to the current state of out-of-control climate-alarmism policies. These raise electricity costs through expensive solar & wind generation, a problem that doesn't look to be ending anytime soon. Long-term beyond 5 years, gas is a better option, especially given that widespread hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling within the industry will keep gas abundant and cheap for decades. One only has to look at gas production and price trends since 2008 to see the evidence, and compare those with electricity trends. (Go to the EIA website and look at the 'Henry Hub natural gas spot price' trend since 2008). My view: hitching yourself to electricity's price risks, all because you can pick up a cheap heater for a few hundred bucks, is foolish.

Thanks for the info. What brand heater did you get? Also, how did you insulate your garage? I'm in the process of buying a home in Lansing with a garage and want to get it heated because my gym will be out there as well as my tools.

The heater i installed is a comfort zone. Yes the walls are insulated and half inch drywall. R13 in the walls and R45 in the ceiling.

About 350 square feet, and yes it's insulated. I run the heater on the 4000 watt setting.

One downside to electric unit heaters is the warranty. Usually just one year.

Comfort zone, 5000,4000,3000 watt settings. I run it in the 4000 watt setting and have been happy with it.

How do you figure that? It's going to take 7-8 years to pay the same amount as the upfront cost of the gas heater. Math states 7-8 years installed and running, you will pay the same amount as the gas upfront. Gas in 7-8 years would be the upfront cost, plus the $5-600 in energy usage, so at the end of the 7-8 years you are spending $5-600 more and so after 10 years installed, you will finally start the OVERALL savings with a gas heater. Do you understand math?

@@LightGesture are you dying in 10 years? And what electric heater is going to heat my 13ft tall 1000sq foot garage faster and more efficiently than a 1000$ gas heater? On average people’s garages are not insulated so keeping a garage comfortable with an electric heater.. you will be making your money up much faster than 10 years. In the range of 3-5 years.

Install yourself. I don't even consider hiring someone so this whole video is a moot point. Someone gave me a free gas heater. And they can be purchased used for very good prices. Start out with a low install price on a gas heater and continue saving with the lower running cost. Win win

Not a good idea to store a propane tank in the garage. Safety first money isn’t everything
