Go with your eyes open. The fascinating and wonderful history of China is not the China of today. Today's China can be described with three words: The Two Michaels.

I've been to Xian, but of course, being a western tourist, there was little time to explore the First emperor's wonderful terra-cotta army, let alone understand the significance of the Tang, or the Han, or even the Silk Road to the city. Mind you, standing on the walls near the Southern gate it was fairly obvious that there had been a lot of alterations over the centuries; unless they were able to predict the development of six lane dual carriageways. I wish I'd seen this before I went, super interesting, and full of stuff I need to look into more closely!

Oh, and if you do go to China and are interested in Chinese art, don't miss the Shanghai museum!

I have seen a clip on KZread of western tourists in Xi An a few years ago. They went around the city dressed up in ancient Chinese costumes. It really lives up to its name because of the ancient Silk Road. During the Western Han, Sui and Tang dynasties imperial families had very mixed blood because of peace marriages. Even Emperor Gao Zong was only 25% Han Chinese.

No. They are saying that the "Li" family is part of this chinese-muslim Empire period, which controlled Xian. Because of the trade routes. What you guys inside China, has NOT been taught is that, there was actually TWO other "empires" that ran at the same time. 1) is called Mughal Empire (chinese-muslim/mongolian/Gengkia khan), the 2) is called the Ottoman Empire.... And there are overlaps with trades, and part of the Silk Road, which entered the current PRC region.... And this is how they slowly got integrated into the modern PRC. THIS kind of thing, is WHAT ROC, and what Taiwan is fighting about ??

Within the Tang imperial family, the mother line had some blood of Xianbei ethnics, which is undeniable. As the went by, the majority of Xianbei People were sinicized and became a part of Han Chinese during North Wei, Sui, and Tang Dynasty, and they disappeared in the history in the end. Stop saying "they were Turkic", which is quite misleading and unreal.

​@@annwilliams6438 並不是，唐朝的通用語言是雅言（古代漢語）看下唐朝時期的詩詞就知道了。No, the common language of the Tang Dynasty was Yayan (ancient Chinese). Just look at the poems of the Tang Dynasty.

Very good and beautiful artistic heritage. The ending is incorrect however. Today Xi Jinping is NOT a dynasty and we do not know how history will judge this period. In fact, Chinese artists today imitate Western art traditions; and government is authoritarianism which experts believe is bad.

It could have been women who painted them!!!

They were Turkish Nomads, who changed and civilised Chinese then...

Lol 1/16th Chinese xianbei and all of a sudden tang is Turkic. Ok lol, modu chanyu is a Chinese emperor then. Also, I doubt the people who spent 1000 years running around plains in animal scraps ‘civilized’ anyone. This doc is misleading on purpose

Tang was the name of the dynasty. The ruling family was the House of Li and it was of Chinese origin. It was prominent for at least 200 years before the founding of the Tang dynasty. This being said, the founding emperor Gaozu (person name Li Yuan) had a Xianbei ancestry through his mother Lady Dugu, Princess Xiangyang. During the Tang dynasty, Li family claimed descend from the great philosopher Laozi (it is said that his personal name was Li Dan). They certainly were not of of Uyghur descend, since during the Tang dynasty Uyghurs started to form as a different group of people. By the way, Uyghur was not used before the 19th century to refer to them. Several KZread channels specialising in Chinese history have made videos about the Li family - you can check the series about the founding of the Tang dynasty by the channel "Cool History Bros" - they used primary Chinese sources about it and it is very insightful.

Not quite - they were speaking a language belonging to the Turkic language family.

The status of women depicted on the murals and wall paintings, which show the aristocrats, nobility, rich and powerful or the emperor's courtesans and ladies in waiting of the imperial court doesn't tell us ANYTHING about status of women in the remaining population. The fates and rights and life possibilities of the former and the latter used to be, more often than not, as different as night and day all around the world at all times and historical periods. Drawing conclusions from what we see in those images and applying them to the ordinary women is like taking the example of i.e. Kim Kardashian, Madonna, Princess Kate or Angela Merkel and assuming Indian peasants, African herders, Chinese sweatshop workers, Philippino maids in UAE or Afghan child brides enjoy the same degree of freedom, the same amount of rights and privileges as them. And another difference being, that the high-status Tang or other dynasty's women was acquired by them solely on the right of birth or the reflexion of the status of their fathers, husbands or owners who kept them as courtesans, while any talents or abilities of those womens might have been gifted with remained ignored, unused or even thwarted in order to not allow them to threaten the delicate pride and self-confidence of men fearing of discovering any woman to be better than them at something. Unlike the talents of men who were allowed and encouraged to develop and put them to use and to advance their careers thanks to their competences, no matter in what social caste they were born.

I'm disappointed that this doc was only presented by Waldemar Januszczak. Even if East Asian art isn't his "wheel house", I believe Januszczak could have put together a superior presentation through consulting other Eastern art history experts. The actual narrator has both a tedious voice and even more boring text, to give a rather weak presentation of this astonishing brilliant artistic period of the longest continuous civilization in human history.
