Why Did Airbus Build The A318 Baby Bus?

The Airbus A318 is the smallest Airbus commercial passenger plane flying today in terms of length, at only 31.44 m (103 ft 2 in) long. But why is it so small? And why was it even built? In this article, we delve into the wonderful world of the Airbus A318 “Baby Bus”.

I flew this plane as a first officer and later on as a captain, super versatile, nice to fly and funny looking plane, we used to land and take off in short 5000 feet runways with really reduced speeds, sometimes if not to heavy VAPP of 115 kts or less, due to the power to weight ratio its a great performing aircraft.

They had to go through the trouble of a taller tail(vertical stabilizer for ppl who know what planes are) to counter act the forces acting on the fuselage... it has a much higher thrust to weight ratio, so that’s why the A318 can also operate in airports like London City, it’s capable of short field operations, and steep approaches. It’s a shame there isn’t many of them, I like the baby bus a lot, flew on the BA1 flight, feels like a you are on a private jet not on a normal plane, albeit when on SQ21 A350 for Singapore, kinda want to go back to that experience again some time hahah

Iberia was also considering it for direct flights from popular Airports like Brussels or NL airports to Melilla, a very touristic small independent city in Northern Africa. The problem was that the ATR 72 is one of the only planes suited for this destination because of the low approach and steep turn (noise constraints) and the jet engines of the A318 would cause issues with the tall buildings on final.

In addition to the other factors, regional jets started to hit up against the 100-125 passenger capacity market, with the larger CRJs, and the Embraer E-Jets, while being probably much cheaper to operate. Parts commonality might be nice for a fleet with a lot of A320 series, but other than that the lower landing and operating costs of RJs probably won out.

I think airbus once toyed with the idea of making regional jets with that name. Think it was a collaboration with another company

It's just an inefficient small a320. If you want a 130 seat plane you can go for the a220 or the crj 1000 or the erj E195 e2, instead of the 3-3 Airbus plane I am an Airbus fan btw (they are so much better than boeing)

@@Repented008I was 100% searies. airbus doesn't make a potential stalling plane, have a cripple system to prevent it, and doesn't require a simulator training so the pilot could know how to dial in case the system stop working. And also Airbus plane are generally more comfortable (better seats, larger overhead beams and the humidity is higher. And it's way cooler. Maybe I say this because I'm not American
