Why Diana Ross didn't win the Oscar for " Lady Sings The Blues " movie ?

Музыка

....If just before the Oscars awarding ceremony ( 1973), a journalist asked to Liza Minnelli who would win and she replied : "Two words, Diana Ross" !!....why Ms Ross didn't win ?!
The film earned an estimated $9,050,000 in North American rentals in 1973 , a record at time !
Diana Ross received the following NOMINATIONS and AWARDS :
In 1973:
A - Diana Ross received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role ;
B Diana Ross won an " NAACP Image Awards as " Best Actress " :
C - Diana Ross won a Golden Globe as " Most Promising Newcomer " ;
D - Golden Globe nomination as " Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama " ;
E - The movie was screened at the 1973 CANNES Film Festival ( France, but it wasn't
entered into the main competition ) ;
F - The movie was also screened in Venice Movie Festival ( Italy ) .
In 1974 ,
A- Diana Ross received a BAFTA nomination ( the British Oscar ) for Best Actress in a Leading Role .
B - Diana Ross, for the sountrack album " LADY SINGS THE BLUES ", won an AMERICAN MUSIC AWARD in the category best "Album Pop / Rock " .
In 1973, Ross' album " LADY SINGS THE BLUES ", reached the # 1 in the USA Billboard album and remained in the charts 54 weeks !
In USA, the album sold over 2 millions records and Diana Ross, in 1974, won an AMA in the category best "Album Pop / Rock " .
It was the first time that, in the American charts, a jazz / blues album reached the # 1 in the pop charts.
The album, peaked at # 5 in CANADA, at # 43 in AUSTRALIA and at # 50 in UK, where the album sold over 100.000 copies and, in 1974, was certified by BPI, GOLD record.
The movie, "Lady Sings the Blues", is a 1972 American biographical film about jazz singer Billie Holiday loosely based on her 1956 autobiography which, in turn, took its title from one of Holiday's most popular songs
The nominations were for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Diana Ross), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Carl Anderson, Reg Allen), Best Costume Design, Best Music, Original Song Score and Adaptation (Gil Askey) and Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Based on Factual Material or Material Not Previously Published or Produced .
The same year, Motown released a hugely successful soundtrack double-album of Ross' recordings of Billie Holiday songs from the film, also titled Lady Sings the Blues.
Vincent Canby of The New York Times described Ross as "an actress of exceptional beauty and wit, who is very much involved in trying to make a bad movie work ... her only apparent limitations are those imposed on her by a screenplay and direction seemingly designed to turn a legitimate legend into a whopper of a cliché."
Variety wrote that "for the bulk of general audiences, the film serves as a very good screen debut vehicle for Diana Ross, supported strongly by excellent casting, handsome '30s physical values, and a script which is far better in dialog than structure."
Roger Ebert gave the film three stars out of four, writing that Ross had given "one of the great performances of 1972" and observing that the film "has most of the clichés we expect-but do we really mind clichés in a movie like this? I don't think so."
Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune also awarded three out of four stars, writing, "The fact that 'Lady Sings the Blues' is a failure as a biography of legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday doesn't mean it can't be an entertaining movie. And it is just that-entertaining - because of an old fashioned grand dame performance by Diana Ross, late of the pop-rock scene, in the title role." Charles Champlin of the Los Angeles Times wrote that Ross gave "one of the truly fine screen performances, full of power and pathos and enormously engaging and sympathetic." Pauline Kael of The New Yorker wrote that "when the movie was over I wrote 'I love it' on my pad of paper ... Factually it's a fraud, but emotionally it delivers. It has what makes movies work for a mass audience: easy pleasure, tawdry electricity, personality-great quantities of personality." Tom Milne of The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote that Ross did "a remarkable pastiche job on the tone and timbre of Billie Holiday's voice, [but] misses the elegant, almost literary wit of her phrasing," and found the presentation of Holiday's life story "offensively simplistic."

    Back then, I'd never seen a performance by an actor that affected me as much as Diana's. Not only her acting, but her rendition of Billie Holiday's songbook. She didn't try to sound like Billie... who could? But she interpreted those songs so beautifully. I bought the LP a day or so later and listened to it over and over. I sang them in the shower ('cause I can't sing anywhere else) and I stole every lick from her. She had stiff competition (I hadn't even seen Sounder yet) but I felt disconsolate when she didn't win. It still bothers me to this day.

    Yes, she was absolutely beautiful in her tribute to Queen B. Her attributes weren't needed from them. Also recordings done by the voice given to her, was astounding. Lady Sings the Blues is a jewel all alone. I proudly accept it to be a treasure that belongs ONLY to us. Diana needed not to be mentioned, for the legacy of this film, the characters and the music. We were able to see her real face, real hair and her real body having a wardrobe made to fit. YESSSSS. An Oscar is not needed to define. Shoot, I'm a candidate for the Oscar on a daily basis.

    I understand that we all love Diana Ross… I understand too that we all feel actresses like Diana were overlooked… but conveniently sweeping aside the very same statistics and glowing reviews and accolades bestowed on Bob Fosse’s technically ground-breaking film Cabaret and Ms Minnelli’s incredibly nuanced portrayal of Sally Bowles, not to mention the iconic songbook presented in the work of Kander &. Ebb, perpetuates an idea that Diana Ross was robbed somehow - that she lost to something inferior. Her performance in Lady Sings The Blues is one that surprised us all, and Ms Holiday never got her fair dues either - none of which are fair - but the point I am trying to make is that Diana Ross lost to another very strong contender that year and so for me, there is no great conspiracy there. If she had lost to some vanilla garbage, I would ‘cry foul’ but unfortunately for Diana, there was something else very special that year that was also up for the award. Liza who had already lost out for The Sterile Cuckoo had continued to mature in front of the camera and worked hard and was also due the credit she deserved for her talents.

    Liza Minnelli was great in "Cabaret" --I loved her -- BUT Liza basically played herself, she played Liza. DIANA on the other hand had an extremely difficult role because no one believed she could play a Jazz singer to begin with & NOBODY believed she could tackle those drug scenes with the ferocious power that she did. Unlike Liza....Diana is on screen virtually every single scene & her co-stars aren't really given big enough parts the way that Michael York & others helped shoulder Cabaret. Liza didn't have all the layers & "ages" that DIANA was required to play. LIZA herself stated before the Oscars that she believed Diana would win it and that Diana deserved it. I believe the death of Judy Garland just 5 years prior gave LIZA a lot of sympathy support (and guilt by the Academy that they failed to award Garland back when they should have for "A Star Is Born"). Let's not forget that Minnelli told Dick Cavett that Sally Boles was a lot like herself and that it wasn't too hard for her to understand Sally. Liza's performance just WAS NOT as shocking or transformative as Ross's (and of course, having Cicely Tyson up for the Oscar that year --she was barely in SOUNDER & wasn't the star of it, Cicely played a supporting role in SOUNDER -- came off as a political ploy to siphon votes from Ross). It worked. DIANA WAS ROBBED ....SHE REALLY WAS. Her performance is absolutely astonishing and astounding, especially for a newcomer in their first role.

    I didn’t realize Desi Arnaz Jr. could be such a jerk… leaving Diana Ross off the nomination list, mispronouncing her name, then asking if she was truly eligible for the award. And what was the look Liza Minnelli gave when DR’s name was announced at the Oscars? She was dating Desi at the time. I think DR put up with a lot of crap being such a successful African American artist and has yet to get the full credit she deserves.

    Why does everything have to be about racism? Qualified Asians were being discriminated in favor of blacks and latinos getting into Harvard which thankfully the Supreme Court struck down. The Oscars are nothing but a subjective award. So how does anybody even determine who did a better performance? This is silly, it’s like saying an impressionist painting is better than a realist classical. Or an orange chicken is better than a barbecue. People get so caught up with superficial glamor and fake glory. The best award is the work and if it stands the test of time. The Color Purple NEVER WON ANY OSCARS. Yet it is still being shown almost every year on tv. It’s not about getting an award, it’s about creating a masterpiece. Nothing is fair on earth and the world will never be fair, that’s just how life is. As soon as a person realizes that unfairness is part of human nature, people would stop being so uptight, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO AWARD SHOWS. What’s unfair is when qualified Asians are discriminated on purpose against the law in favor of another race.

    ...before, the same things happened to blacks and after, to latinos discriminated in favor of whites : as you see, the story repeating ! So ? In the case of Diana Ross, when to Liza Minnelli was asked who would win the Oscar, she replied: "two words,: Diana Ross" I know, that an award is just an award but it is also a recognition of skill, of the talent of an artist. But the absurd thing is that in the jury of the Oscars assignees, there were also Judy Garland and Vincent Minnelli, Liza Minnelli's mother and father!! Anyway, the fact remains that Diana Ross won a Cesar (the French film Oscar) and a Golden Globe. Furthermore, after 60 years of career, Diana Ross continues to perform live in the Arenas around the world while we have lost track of Liza Minnelli, we have not heard anything about her for several years!
