You don’t need to claim it’s for detox purposes if you want a massage or to sit in a steam room or anything like that. You probably had a tough week, you deserve that massage no matter how ‘clean’ the inside of your body is. You don’t need an excuse to relax.

That's what he said. He said that he's never one to turn down a sauna (presumably because of the relaxation) but that it didn't flush out toxins. It was only the colonoscopy which was harmful; everything else was fine.

+Ashkaun If that's the take-away, then I strongly disagree. Believing in bad science has more detriments than a clinically non-specific placebo effect can help. Furthermore, if you are suffering from something that needs to be treated and you merely treat it with bogus remedies, then you risk serious illness or complications down the line. Real medicine also has a placebo effect. The definition of real medicine is treatment or procedure which works *better* than placebo. So, there is almost no reason to speak well of anything which only confers a placebo effect.

Adam isn't completely correct to claim some detox treatments do nothing, and he kind of shoots himself in the foot by denying benefits to massages, sauna and drinking water. If his claim is that normal metabolism will detox, anything that increases metabolic rate will technically be a detox treatment. Even drinking more water helps (although the impact is almost negligible). So, in essence detox treatments aren't scams, they just have really shitty results for their asking price.

Striker775 he's not saying drinking water or getting a good massage isn't good for you, he's just saying it has nothing to do with "detox" or "toxins". Toxic matter is processed by your organs. Hydratation is obviously necessary to stay alive and massages are good to relieve stress and tension, but it's nothing about detox.

  • @lazyperfectionist3978

Striker, massages don't remove toxins, and that drinking too much water and using the sauna don't exactly get rid of toxins (the closest would be just water, alcohol in small amounts, etc). They have other benefits, but not necessarily toxin removal.

I so glad people are finally exposing old market scams. Just don't throw out the real reason people go on cleanses, to try and stop consuming alcohol, tobacco and sweets. When you're a college student (or working any hard job) there is rarely a good excuse not to go binge drinking or step outside and smoke (despite severe health risks in either case) because the person asking you is often even more addicted than you. This allows a socially acceptable way to turn down and actually allow people to go the two weeks required to drop most habits, though addictions can often be a lifelong struggle.

NyteMunkey: I don't read "lame internet sites" about those topics if I can't read the source studies. And I've read a bunch. Adam has a video about fat. But a much better one (with more sources) is "What I've learned - Story of fat" and other videos of that channel about sugar, ketones and fasting. All of them very well sourced. Watch any of them and tell me what part is "spreading nonsense".

Adam, you said “Anything can be toxic if you ingest too much of it.” Then you gave water as an example. The condition caused by excessive ingested water is commonly called water toxicity. However, that is a misnomer. The actual effect of excess water is that it causes dilution of the body’s electrolytes - especially sodium. The result of this dilution is disrupted cell function.

My mom doesn't walk anymore after the stroke and she had problem to poop last year, so the doctor came to our house and said the only way to take the feces out was through that procedure. And it looks really uncomfortable, so I can only imagine how my mom was feeling. Fortunately she poops normally now.

Your ex argues that detox is good, but provides no evidence for that. Instead your ex simply dispels evidence from the other side. But it's the debater's job to defend, not attack! 2) Genetic fallacy. Your ex dismisses evidence purely because of its source (doctors). 3) Hasty generalization fallacy / tu quoque/ black and white: assuming ALL doctors are greedy and would break the Hippocratic Oath for money.

1:39 cupping is good but mainly for nerve pain and inflammation. It has nothing to do with getting rid of toxins from your body. Similar to acupuncture, cupping a good compliment to modern medicine & good for people who have really tight nerves, body pains, or are recovering from an injury. But its not an end all be all cure. An example: Im a migraine sufferer. Stuff like Excedrin can douse a migraine but migraines are tricky and some days nothing works. In that emergency if Im not having drastic ET symptoms & am just experiencing the splitting pain, I go to an accuouncturist. The needles relieve the pain pressure on the nerves & redirect the pain signals elsewhere. This knocks out a migraine completely. But notice its not a be all cure either. I’m not cured completely as my body will and does continue to experience migraines. Acupuncture just helps when they come on.
