Why Destiny 2 is Genuinely a Bad Game

Ойындар

Destiny 2 is a bad game? Well... Destiny 2 is actually a good game but has such bad monetization that it overshadows and corrupts all potential positives Destiny 2 might have. In this video, I wanted to take a look at exactly why this monetization model has killed any and all love I had for this franchise, and Bungie Studios. Eververse Cash Shop is a large factor...

Bungie is also the reason why Naughty Dog hasn't released their Last Or Us: Faction multiplayer because Sony took Bungie's opinion as gospel when they had them consult on it. Likely, they didn't see a massive way to rip off the fan base and that can't stand in the world of Bungie multiplayer. I stopped playing D2 when Bungie announced that they were removing paid content for "the good of the game" get F'd Bungie.

I’m terrified for that they’re going to do to Sonys 1st party multiplayer. I’m sure factions was ready to show but bungie saw that there wasn’t enough monetization/live service gimmicks. I’m sick of them and just want a traditional PS2/PS3 era multiplayer game again.

I blame the community almost as much as Bungie. When people tried to protest all the monetization changes, there were just as many if not more people calling them haters and defending Bungie's inexcusable actions, so those players left. Now this is the state the game is in, and you can bet it will only get worse.

This happens to every game where the developer tries to implement more and more predatory monetisation. For example, guild wars 2. There will always be a group of brain dead consumers who will applaud as they're being robbed. They are just that stupid and if they weren't playing video games they'd get scammed of their own volition somewhere else.

The saddest part is, no matter how many of us raise our voices with concern and tell Bungie to stop their schemes, they will fall on deaf ears. I have lost faith in the company that made my childhood and teenage years special and got me hooked up on gaming and FPS shooters. This company is not the same Bungie who made Halo 1-reach. This is not the same Bungie who made Destiny 1. These are not the same brilliant minds who were behind Forsaken, the last great era of D2. At this point, even a D3 wouldn’t save our playerbase because we keep on giving in to the soullessness of corporate greed. It is over guys, we will never get those good old days of 2015-18 back. And my heart is utterly shattered because of it.

Shit like no hard mode armour in raids and even not being arsed to port d1 raids fully with all of their guns and cosmetics is taking the piss, especially given back in vog rerelease they locked some shaders or some shit behind silver saying it was an unlockable reward that you had to pay for. Also they seem to not be able to be consistent to any any degree with the quality of expansions, they have proven that they are capable of making good expansions but it seems most of them especially lightfall end up being horrible.

  • @bottom523

Absolutely this. I couldn't continue playing after they removed so much paid content, and what sucked the most is that there was barely any backlash to it. Most of the playerbase just rolled over while at the same time defending Bungie. If the game was so bloated that you had to remove content to continue, maybe it's, ya know, time to make a new game. But no, they didn't want to give up the current playerbase and subsequent cash flow, so the consumers paid the cost.

I've been through its ups and downs, but when Bungie sold the anniversary event and the new expansion separately, I just stopped because it started to get too expensive. I also couldn't play the next expansion due to having to serve in my countrys military. After missing out on two major expansions I decided it was too costly to get back in to the game. It was pretty unfortunate for me since I really liked playing alongside the main story, I can't justify spending so much money and time to keep playing at the same pace I used to just to be able to complete most of the things in the game. Now I just follow the main story through gameplay videos and other things.

You mentioned the story and for me, that is what has kept me around and not in the way you'd think. The old lore and story is what kept me invested throughout the years, especially within the drought, and now I am losing that love I had for it as its progressively gotten worse. The stories are shallow, the mystery is gone and reveals feel empty. I feel the sunk cost fallacy has truly set in with me and I realized this with Plunder, I should leave the game, but I have been committing myself until the end of Final Shape. It would be better to just leave now, but with only 9ish months left of the saga, it feels like I am obligated to see it through since I have been here since the beta. I feel like a lot of players feel that way too sadly.

Per the game's story and it feeling a bit lost from time to time, Jason Jones and a few other key people basically have pushed the concept of overarching heavy handed metaphors tied into philosophical and mythological concepts and references with basically every game's story he worked on, Destiny is no exception and pretty much an embodiment when it comes to a ton of nods to duality and no shortage of various morality parables. This far along I'm not super surprised we've gotten moments of complete junkfood saturday morning cartoon level writing and story pacing because Bungie how much more could you really write about such vague simple complex, especially when there has been total retcons of tons of important stuff. It seems that they've basically been running the clock with Lightfall. The contents of this year were virtually never in the initial plans and Final Shape essentially got what was meant to be the real last year of D2's Light/Dark saga. We basically got confirmation of this when Bungie put out a ton of articles before LF's release that alludes way more to a polished product by the time Final Shape launches and just how much is being put off for later despite an earlier promise(see nature of LFG further on backburner, among other things). That all being said you aren't alone, a lot of people are playing Destiny due to that sunk cost investiture and it has just been a game people tolerate.

It's been genuinely depressing to watch BUNGiE transform a game I went 'Wow!' over back in 2015 into a new form of substance abuse. All for a buck. And the industry is largely mimicking this agenda. You knew this was coming when they promoted a social network marketing and targeted advertising hack to CEO, but who knew it would ever get THIS bad? My sense is that they're overestimating the appeal of the "extraction shooter" genre, and that the game they've been pouring all their money into won't be the monumental ca$h cow they obviously think it will. That was the final straw for me. The amount of overmonatization of the game just started to piss me off as I simply watched Destiny progress into a shittier state only to cost more and more money. So I went back to playing single player games like you lol. I started playing No Man's Sky again, and was amazed just how much content they added to the game, completely free of charge. They realize Destiny is a cash cow and want to keep milking it. Bungie realizes they have their diehard fans that are just hooked on the game and will keep paying. Destiny doesn't run on quality content, it runs on sunk-cost, FOMO and habit-forming mechanics. It shares more in common now with the design of mobile games than it does with standard console/PC games. At this point it's less a game and more a psychological experiment to see how little content they can offer and still get people paying.

That's not how buyouts work. The studio's owners and shareholders were given that money not Bungie as a whole. The company might have gotten some additional funding from their new owners, but nowhere near the purchase price of 3.6 Billion USD. The reason for increased season prices? The same reason that milk and eggs cost more. The value of the dollar is down because of inflation, so prices for everything go up to compensate.

  • @taragnor

    @taragnor

    Жыл бұрын

@@zanzion3873 Yeah, I know Bungie didn't get the money. My point was that to be even valued in the billions, it means they've got a good amount of resources (otherwise they wouldn't be worth a $3.6 billion purchase). And really if they were taxing themselves to the max to produce the low quality content they release for D2, then why would anyone want to drop billions to buy them? As far as the inflation argument, then why didn't it apply to anything else? Capcom was still able to produce a ton of content for Monster Hunter Rise's expansion Sunbreak. We had Elden Ring which was extremely content rich, and basically anything produced by Rockstar has a crap ton of value in their games. People bashed Cyberpunk, but the game still had a decent amount of content. Other companies are capable of delivering on content-rich experiences, where as Bungie's devs bitch and moan about something as trivial as making new Strikes. No other major game company relies on low effort content as much as Bungie, except perhaps Blizzard with Overwatch 2. The reason they don't is psychological. Destiny 2 is built using mobile game design philosophy. The entire goal is to make playing it a habit. Giving people massive content dumps might burn them out.

So true! And TBH, 3 years ago, I would have paid 20€ instead of 10€ for each and every Season in D2, if it had meant that I get double the content. But now, having to pay more for getting less? Just No!

The thing that really turned me off to Destiny was really how Bungie changed as a company. You can see it in everything they make now. They’re more interested in pushing monetization and Identity Politics than they are about making a good game that people want to play. The way they treated Marty, the obvious way that they pushed out descenting voices. Then familiar faces began to leave more and more. It’s all this giant cocktail of gross. I have a hard time playing a game that, in 2014 through to vanilla D2 my friends and I played dozens of not hundreds of hours of. Now I can’t get them to even consider it. I wouldn’t want them to anyways now.

The worst part about this is, that devs release half of a game, charge 70+€ for it and then shove the overpriced ingame shop in your face "because we need to keep the servers running". No. Not during the first year. The first year should be 100% free. THEN. and only THEN you may think about how to finance the following years

this is a great video im glad it came to my feed. i wholeheartedly agree with just about every word that was said in this video. i was a hardcore destiny player before destiny 2. i d1 i went flawless every week on multiple characters and even back then i loved destiny.. flaws and all.... and then bungie ended up putting in eververse.. and back then i knew this was going to spiral... but the first original sign as to the direction they would take the ip.. was when they sold multiple season passes in the original destiny turning the experience from a 60 dollar game into a 100$ experience.. not including the eververse ''cosmetics'' they felt like throwing at us... i dont know if its because they are partnered with activision... but i remember back then thinking.. ''yeah bungie and activion.. maybe theres hope'' nope not a fkn one ray of sunshine for us... the consumers... but these greedy cucks are swimming in an ocean of money thanks to the idiot whales and also the people who arent like myself... and continued playing and feeding the machine... i proudly can say i quit d2 in curse of osirus after i heard about the xp throttle tactic.. .... and let me tell you guys.. i know some of you need to hear this.. THEY DONT GIVE HALF A SHIT ABOUT YOU.... OR WHAT YOU WANT. especially as long as you still play their game... if you still play d2 youre just as bad as a whale imo...

My main annoyance is when Bungie says they do not wanna over deliver an expansion cause we do not want the fan base to expect the following to be better or more. They had the Taken King and Forsaken as both their best expansions to date. So when they say we do not wanna over deliver.. I say why not? do it once in a while or all the time cause it is pretty sad that out of all the expansions only 2 always tends to be the largest and most content they can dish out we keep mentioning or comparing.

  • @frogman7345

Taken King and Forsaken also needed to hit or there wouldn't be any destiny. I think what they saying with the "over deliver" line is reasonable because the pressure from potentially losing your job will lead to way to much crunch. But i also think that's not all bungie is a lot bigger now with more resources then they ever had. They should be aiming higher with final shape.

Its honestly baffling to me that so many players will support Bungie's greedy monetisation practices despite the fact that Bungie doesn't even care about those who deffend them. Only their wallets. The only way Bungie will ever change is if push comes to shove, and their bottom line is in jeopardy, like after the launch of Curse of Osiris.

Done plenty of day one raids, loved alot of the game but its never been anything like d1, I've completely been addicted to d2 I haven't enjoyed it since forsaken. I quit a few days ago deleted all my characters, even that you can't just delete all 3 you have to delete 2 and then make a new one🤣 honestly the second bungie started "vaulting" content that I've paid for and the fan boys defended it I knew that bungie would take that and just keep pumping the scummy practices. What a fall from grace this game and its community have took. Pvp is honestly disgusting 1 new map in 4 years. 1 strike in the new expansion its honestly laughable. I always enjoy your takes man and will still support. But I am finally free of the destiny digital crack🤣🤪

Destiny 2 is really hard for new players to join, because of the complicated story that just gets thrown straight at your face and the slow paced beginning, but after passing through that (leaving the Cosmodrome) the game was really fun and the mechanics were amazing, but I uninstalled the game after facing the surrounding paywalls that greet you after reaching rank 6 and the 1750 "power cap". I gave up on the ranks and tried doing some missions such as nightfall, but I couldn't get to play it because much of it was behind another paywall (forsaken pack). The last straw was when I thought "fine let's check how much it would cost me to enjoy the full game", 300€ (many of the items were in discount) not even the new call of duty was so expensive on launch day, triple A games were 60€ tops, and Bungie is asking for 300€?

Destiny is one of those games I can play a few hours a week and feel like i barely missed anything. The game became more fun for me per session once I stopped caring about grinding god rolls, but to log on once ot twice a week, play the dungeon a raid and some story content and im good. Maybe some trials over the weekend between my work shifts. The only thing i dislike currently really is the seasonal content, its really shit and its unrewarding as hell

I relate to this video a lot. I've also switched to single player games because all the PvP games that come out are all terrible these days. When I was growing up, I had Halo, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Gears of War, Call of Duty 4/MW2/MW3. It was so good. It's crazy what has happened to multiplayer games these days. They are objectively worse.
