Why Dentistry?

Why Dentistry?
It’s the dreaded question that puts us on the spot when we’re writing our personal statements, giving an interview or even having a casual conversation.
Many people are curious as to how someone can be passionate about a profession like dentistry. I get it, for other careers it’s a bit more obvious. So I decided to ask a few people (and myself) why!?
Hopefully it can help those of you considering dentistry, or those of you that just cant put into words why you want to do dentistry.
I know Dentistry vs. Medicine is mentioned a lot, not to say that dentistry is better than medicine (that’s not possible) but to show the thought process of choosing dentistry, a branch of medicine, over other healthcare professions.
Also, I know I said stimulated instead of simulated (we all make mistakes)...
Thank you to everyone who took part in the video, it showed how similar but unique our reasons for choosing dentistry are!

Thanks for your video! It popped up after I watched a video promoting my alma mater Dental School. I am a dentist in the USA, but had to stop practicing, due to a disability affecting my hands. I have shared your video with my husband and children because it so perfectly illustrates all of the reasons I went into dentistry. I feel that it will help them know me better, especially since my children never knew me as a practicing dentist. Still, they experienced the fact that you can take a dentist out of dentistry, but you can't take the dentistry out of the (non-practicing) dentist. I greatly miss it, although I apply the skills I learned in it, in myriad ways, to my life outside of dentistry.

Hey, if I'm honest that's where I struggled to be different/unique. I've always loved art I did that and graphics at GCSEs and it's a hobby of mine now, I'm good at henna, knitting (learnt it for my skill section in dofe) and drawing etc but I didn't have anything amazing to show how I demonstrate manual dexterity. You just have to be honest or try and take up something that will demonstrate it!

Hey, my name Mahnoor. I'm an aspiring dentist and will apply the coming year. One of the most daunting tasks are the interview. Could you please make an video on the day of your interview. How did you feel? How early did you get there? What type of interview what it? MMI? How long was it ? Did they confirm you a place right there/then or a few days later? How long did you prep for the interview? What were the questions asked? How did you reply? How many people were interviewing you? Were all asking questions? How much in dept knowledge should we have about dentistry on the day? How were you scored if you were told? Was there many dental questions such as what is decay or fillings or...? Anything else that pops up in your mind please also include. Me and many more people would love if you could make a video on that, Your videos are great to watch!! :) Thank you so much.

So my parents keep getting mad at me when I say I wanna be a dentist when I get older. They keep wanting me to become a doctor because they think I'm gonna be poor if I'm a dentist and not a doctor because I won't make much money. I keep telling them I'm mot interested in being a doctor anymore. they also say that in order to be a dentist, u have to open your own department which I know isn't true.

Denistry is creative? Gee, I thought it was more scientific? I hear tell there are various thoughts about aggressive and conservative treatment. Very little oversight over the career field in the US. More probably, dentists in other countries may be more trustworthy, because the US offers a much more lucrative career. According to some in this video, those who could not make it as a doctor became dentists. Interesting. Those most convincing about their motivations are those who spoke about working with their hands and like the manual dexterity. Alternatively, if one is looking at more opportunities for operative work scare me, and I am not afraid of dentists, I am afraid of unnecessary work because the dentists want some operative time.

so a dentist does not help you? They want money for the work they do....do you work for free? As mentioned the reasons are: manual labor, working in the medical field, working with patients, using science, making a living, not working in office enviroment, better life/work balance.
