    I feel like when Vader says "I am not your failure obi-wan, you didn't kill Anakin Skywalker, I did" Just that... is kind of a big deal. Because this whole time Obi-wan is beating himself up about him failing Anakin... and personally... I think inside of Vader's head, Anakin knew this, that he was blaming himself for what Vader became, and told him it wasn't his fault. like he didn't fail Anakin, his friend. So he can rest easy, and only afterwards, Vader, realizing Anakin said that to make his master feel better, turns it into a threat "the same way I will destroy you" Just my vision on it... and personally it makes sense.

    I think Obi Wan tapped into the Jedi equivalent of a Sith's burning hatred and need for dominance; compassion, love, and protecting others from harm. While he was buried under the ground he thought of Luke and Leia. I remember Anakin once said compassion/unconditional love is essential to a Jedi and Kenobi found it in that moment, becoming more powerful than he was during the Clone Wars. He became what Anakin saw him as; powerful as Windu and wise as Yoda. On the other hand I also believe Vader becomes unbalanced when people tied to his past are involved. Ahsoka, Obi-Wan and Luke. Palpatine sees this flaw as well. Even the Grand Inquisitor looked like he felt something was off about Vader.

    Vader can’t fully let go of Anakin’s attachments. For the Sith, attachments are a weakness. So, a Sith must eliminate their’s. For the Jedi, attachments can conflict with your duty and clarity of mind. So, a Jedi must be willing to let go of their’s. They are two sides of the same coin.

    Obi-Wan's duel with Vader is a prequel to Luke Skywalker's duel against his father and the Emperor. This dynamic duel suggests that giving in to hate will only lead to the path of destruction. Anakin was deeply rooted in hate against the Jedi and his master Obi-Wan he was misled to believe that turning to the dark side was his only way to avenge himself. Luke, unlike his father, took the heed from Obi-Wan and master Yoda, and was able to overcome the emperor in the Return Of The Jedi and saving his father as well. The stark comparison is that while one uses the force for personal gain, the other uses it to save others. The wise Yoda's words came true, Anakin was deeply rooted in pain and suffering. He cannot be help.

    When Vader says “I am not your failure obiwan”…that was definitely anakin. Deep down, there is still love with these characters and that’s why they can’t finish each other off. People got so mad when Vader let Kenobi go in episode 3 of the show, but to me, it made perfect sense. Vader can’t stand what Kenobi did to him, but he will always be his master and he will always have respect for him. And when Kenobi is around, that light side comes out so much that even Vader can’t resist.

    'I'm not your failure' was 100% Anakin brief resurface. It was him trying to take Obi Wan's guilt, it was like 'it's okay master, I forgive you, it's not your fault'. But, obviously, his Vader persona was too strong to let go of hate and rage, but I'm convinced it was Anakin, not Vader saying that. Plus I think it pretty much confirms Anakin and Vader are like two people, split personality. Plus, I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I had a feeling, like with this teasing at the end 'I will destroy you', Vader was basically begging Obi Wan to kill him. He must've known he's lost already, he was barely standing and when Obi Wan turned his back and walked away, he didn't do anything. If he was so sure he'll destroy Obi Wan, why not attack then? I have a feeling like death would've been soothing for him, in that moment.

    That was really like a moment of forgiveness. It looks to me like Anakjn/Vader serves Sidious out of fear now rather than loyalty or any other mutual feeling. His whole transformation was because he wanted to save Padme. He failed, he made he choice and he follows up. I think a lot of his anger is really just that he is angry at his own decisions because he knows he was wrong and stupid and he takes it out on everyone else.

    This is even further proven as a point when Vader when talking to palpetine renounces his old master and the Vader revenge he had. Palps knew obi wan brought the light out in Anakin, and would rather have obi wan alive then let Vader get sucked into his internal conflict. Just let the hate of Vader grow and pain of Vader grow not based on revenge.

    I like how this fight scene and the flashbacks to the training room give a canonical reason why their rematch in A New Hope is so much slower than all the other lightsaber duels. Anakin/Vader underestimated Obi Wan twice and was absolutely wrecked each time. Rather than his usual aggressive fighting style and going straight for for the kill he is much more calm and reserved during their fight on the Death Star, choosing to deliver a number of soft strikes to test Obi Wan and see what he’s up against. It gives more meaning to the line “I was but the learner, now I am the master” an it seems he finally learned the lesson Obi Wan tried to give him as a Padawan about not letting his need for victory blind him.

    Also if Vader tried to make sink holes on the Death Star, he'd kill basically everyone around him and potentially even destroy the station. He may see the Death Star as nothing more than a useful tool, yet still inferior to what can be done with The Force, but he still has to do the bidding of papa Palps and Palps wants a Death Star.

    That was actually fixed, in exactly the same way, in a novel. It's from Obi's point of view, and he quickly realizes that Vader is simply matching his power. Like you said, Obi Wan quickly realizes his arms are burning, he can't breathe, and Vader's strikes require copious draws on the force just to parry. When Vader refuses to press the advantage, and simply continues to batter and beat him, he knows he can't defeat him which leads to his sacrifice

    Funny you say that because I was just thinking yesterday about how Anakin/Vader is kind of a victim if you think about it. Manipulated by Palpatine from a young age into becoming his apprentice and as a result he makes a bunch of bad decisions out of anger, fear and hate which lead to him losing everything, including body parts. Now he lives every day in pain and agony and he's so consumed by the dark side that he knows he can't come back. So he embraces the anger and hate and the newfound darkness within him. Yes Anakin is still responsible himself for his own decisions, he could have tried to save Padme in a different way or not cut off Mace Windu's hand. But if he had never been manipulated in the first place, would he still have gone down that path? If the answer is no, then he is, "From a certain point of view" a victim.

    During this fight, I really think that Vader was in an emotional turmoil with his old self when it came to Obi-Wan, the Inquisitor told him on the battleship what was the practical thing to do but Vader shoved him aside and decided to use his emotions, especially when he buried his former master under the rubble but underestimated him once again (or overestimaed himself). And later, you can see that Obi-Wan got his "power up" as soon as he remembered Luke and Leia and his oath to protect them which means that deep down it's his attachement and care for them that made him so powerful and his return as the powerful Jedi master he's known for. This also reminded me of Luke when he defeated Vader and brought back Anakin into the light, through his attachement to his dad and sister.

But he ultimately lost because he was conflicted I think underneath that mask during the entire fight even though we couldn't see it until he got the ahsoka treatment that the inner turmoil and the inner battle between Anakin and Vader was really evident I mean because you don't see Vader's eyes first thing you see anakins and then slowly vader starts taking over. He wasn't fully enveloped in the dark side during this fight or in his entire run as Darth Vader the rest of his days he was always conflicted. The Marvel comic books he's a true powerhouse as he should be, I mean some of the stuff that he does in the Marvel comics are insane and I'm not complaining because it's awesome to Vader really powerful like that, but here in the live action even sidious realized Anakin was peeking through more so than Vader that's why he was sensing the power difference just as wave stated. Now if Obi-Wan would have mentioned Padme I truly believe Vader would have went ballistic and comic book style on Obi-Wan

    I think that Obi Wan needs to believe that but in actuality doesn't. Vader saying those words: I killed Anakin not you, says to me that he was almost trying to give Obi Wan a little comfort which is all Anakin and Obi Wan would know that. As I said, just like Luke when he says it about his father, they both need to believe that's the truth to give them strength to go forward and fight Vader. In all honesty I think that Obi Wan still believes in Anakin just as Luke did but is letting him go in order to protect the children and himself.

    It's interesting that the Jedi failed to realize that LOVE - true, self-sacrificial LOVE - is what saved the galaxy and brought Vader back to the light side to bring balance to the force. The Jedi tried to stifle the love that Anakin had for his mother, wife, and unborn children. Instead of teaching him that love was about self-sacrifice, letting go, and being of service to others, their negligence let Palpatine influence Anakin, turning his love into a deeply self-centered, twisted possession and fear. Luke was willing to sacrifice himself to save his father, and in the end his father sacrificed himself to save his son. "The circle is now complete." God, I love the OT and the prequels. Note: if you want to understand *deeply* what I mean by "love," then look to the Christian definition of love. George Lucas was heavily influenced by Judeo-Christian mythology when writing the OT & Prequels.

    I honestly think obi wan isn’t given his stripes. He’s always portrayed by SW fans as the weakling of the major jedi/sith, and inferior to the others, winning only though opponents weakness in the moment. Obi wan is not only powerful in the force, but able to properly tune into it. He’s also referred to as THE master of soresu, on top of being highly skilled in form 4, his lightsaber skills are elite. However the thing that people fail to realise about kenobi is his ingenuity. He’s extremely fast thinking and quick witted. His ability to improvise and adapt to situations is second to none. We see it constantly in how he capitalises on situations and works so efficiently in the moment. A quality that can trump incredible power or lightsaber skill. He knows how to read a room and find cards that he can use to his advantage. Having this ability and being able to enhance his movement/decisions with the force shows how powerful he truly is. He bested vader fair and square, by being the smarter man. That vader was by no means weaker, obi was just fully in tune with the force and became more powerful than ever before. Almost as if the force realised who he was and allowed him to unlock his latent power.

    I couldn't agree more. Skill and power is one thing, awareness and cunning is a whole different story… Darth Vader seems more like a super athlete but Obi-wan Kenobi seems more like a real warrior. As the true story of Miyamoto Musashi (the greatest duellist in history who defeated his first opponent at the age of 13 and went on to defeat 61 opponents and never lost a duel) suggests, having skill is good but having strategy, tactics and guile is even better. That is Obi-wan I think, the center forward who seems to have average dribbling, shooting and heading skills, but keeps scoring and winning matches.

    That is exactly what I took from the fight that unlike most dark side users while Vader is getting angry, he doesn't feed off it, he's just becomes more & more frustrated. You can even see how anxious he is when he first double hands his lightsaber he regrips it with his bottom hand like three times. I also really like that he takes responsibility for his own actions by telling Obi-Wan that he is not his mistake, signifying that he understands it was his decision that led down this path not Obi-Wan's failure as a teacher. It's almost a final bit of respect for the man who he once considered family.

That selflessness and total commitment and certainty in their path is perhaps the purest embodiment of the Light Side. I'm reminded of Kanan's last stand in Star Wars: Rebels when he held back a massive explosion, willingly and knowingly giving up his own life to save his friends. In long sword fencing one of the comon techniques employed when your fighting a superior opponent is to tier them out. It sounds strange but sometimes you aren't going to be faster or stronger no mater how long you train. So you play defense. You take gaurds and positions that threaten your opponent but also defend you. You block pary and counter cut where you can never over exerting yourself, only enough to threaten your opponent. At some point they will mess up. At some point they will hit cocky, or they will tier and that's when you go for the kill. You will only have one chance at best. But I will never forget the moment I took down an aponent 5 years my senior when he got cocky.... an I though my blade point first into his chest. (It was a training sword don't wory) oficaly I had won. The strik hit hard enough to count as a legal hit, and he didn't have enough time to counter attack so It was a clean hit. I was tierd and sweaty. But had the biggest grin on my face. I think he was actually impressed, ended up helping me up and gave me the point that round. However afterwords he beat my ass. But I've always seen that dual as a prime example of playing the long game.

You are right who knows what would of happened next if Kenobi would have attempted to finish Vader off but I think he would of rose to the occasion growing stronger with the dark side of the force. Generally if you feel that way about someone and they don't reciprocate it leads to all sorts of issues. You take any action or statement by that person way more seriously, they can hurt you or excite you at the drop of a hat, and you are always the weaker more forgiving or hateful person around them depending on their actions. Best just to cut that person out of your life and move on. Vader has put Ben on this pedestal, or at least Annikan has, and he won't consider himself all powerful until he defeats him.

    Man this broke it for me. Under no circumstances can this work. If Vader knew Obi-Wan was alive he would stop at nothing to kill him. He wouldn’t stop hunting him ever. If Obi-Wan actually managed to defeat Vader (which he wouldn’t be able to do at that point) then he would have killed him. So all this did was look awful and break the lore of Star Wars all to come off as some bad fan fiction.

    Anyone notice the Mirroring between obi won vs Vader and Ashoka vs Vader. They both accept that they must fight vader. They both get overpowered halfway through the fight by Vader’s force. But at the end they both overpower vader and slice the same part of his mask and he calls out to them both. Also the cut on his mask is on different sides which I think symbolises that Ashoka and obi wan are both parts of anakin as in they’re teaching are what made anakin

    He did OUTSMART him. Vader buried Obi-Wan (alive) to humiliate him. Vader wanted Obi-Wan to know Vader defeated him, to feel that as he died. This was what Obi-Wan was telling Anakin at the end of the flashback duel in epi 5. Anakin loses because of his need to prove himself better than Obi-Wan, to make Obi-Wan feel the sting of defeat. When Obi-Wan emerged from being buried alive, Vader was caught off guard. They dueled and it was evenly matched. Obi-Wan ONLY got the upper hand when he began attacking the machinery that sustained Vader. THIS weakened Vader enough for Obi-Wan to get the tactical advantage. They were match blow for blow and Vader defeated Obi-Wan by overwhelming him with dark side powers. Obi-Wan wasn't prepared to fight this way. When he emerge from the pit, he knew he had to let go of any sentimental connection to Anakin and fight full-fledged.

    Darth Vader wasn't just fighting Obi Wan, he was fighting Obi Wan and Anakin Skywalker. The latter's love for his former Master probably made Vader pull his punches (I mean he buried the guy he was hunting for so long probably because he could not actually kill him?) until Vader permanently neutralized the Anakin that was still deep within him, pushing him to a distant dormant place in his mind that only his son could reach decades later.

    While there may be some issues in this show I absolutely love just how much emotion it gave to Vader and Kenobi. It highlighted a cunning yet broken Obi-Wan willing to do whatever he could to survive. It highlighted a cold and ruthless Vader, the same man who raided the jedi temple and slaughtered countless jedi masters. One thing that kept coming to my mind seeing the final episode was the exchange between kenobi and Vader in a new hope where Vader says when he last left him he was but the learner and now he is the master, I think this videos does a great job of highlighting why that is so. The growth in obi wan and the emotional turmoil of Vader really made me feel like we finally received the missing character link between the prequels and the original trilogy. Vader tried desperately to destroy every vestige of Anakin, yet despite all this if he had truely succeeded, seeing Luke suffering at the hands of the emperor would have had no effect on the cold and ruthless Vader.

    @@youmadvids there's a difference between thinking you're over something or past it when it's not around, and then being confronted with it in person. In the comics he overcomes his connections to Anakin, at least, that's what we are led to believe. The "spirit domination"scene ends with a glimpse of Luke, and a blinding blue light. Essentially showing Vader his future, but he doesn't know what it means. He didn't dominate anything in that moment, he just believes he did and Anakin is gone. We see, throughout all of canon, Padme was right. There is good in Vader and it never leaves however feint. In this scene he is confronted face to face with Obi-Wan. He hears an apology. He feels the remorse. He wants it to mean nothing to him, but he is obviously conflicted. Calling Obi-Wan master, telling him he killed Anakin. This is all brought to a head with Luke. Luke was the spark that ignited the fire of light in Vader, but there had to be something there to catch. "tell your sister, you were right", Anakin never left Vader, no matter how many times Vader tried to deny that, tried to say he killed Anakin. He had the same ties to the past, the same connections and love in Padme and Obi-Wan.

    @@higglybiggly1174 I have to disagree with this. That entire comic was him going through the motion of him giving into the Darkside. He literally killed all the masters with no remorse AT ALL. He literally feels himself getting stronger as time went on. He dominates not only his past in spirit realm ( which is literally the one place you need to go to overcome and surpass yourself as a Jedi or sith ) but also his current self. Yes like showed up at the end but like you meant he didn't know what that meant. At that moment in time the only thing that mattered to him was over coming his past self and he was shown doing so. For him to make a full 180 and go back on that even though he has had multiple trials before this makes no since. This even contradicts new hope. I mean Anakin is down over and over again even when he rages out of control he grows stronger by the second and obi wan hasn't fought a serious or any fight since he arrived on tattoine. So him being Anakin makes no since. No matter how great the force is he shouldn't be a match for Vader. Who hunted and killed Jedi.

    Obi-wan is not a murderer. He is not there to defeat Vader, and in some senses he has zero reasons to do it. At best he is only there to save the refuges and buy them time, and possible try to turn Anakin back, but instead he is blinded by how inhuman Anakin now is and cant see the opening thread (thanks Demon Slayer for that term) that Luke will later be able to use for redemption. Vader did put up a great fight, but he is fighting his old master, who knows all the BS tactics Anakin will use, he can try to be all big and bad in his silly suit, but there is still a kernel of Anakin's arrogance that constantly got him defeated by Obi-wan in their mocks duels (see previous episode duel)

    It was so weird and even frustrating to see Obi-Wan defeating Vader so straightforwardly and aggressively. He's supposed to be an underdog who compensates with his skill and wit, fighting defensively and being smart. He's supposed to be all about defense. Especially after a 10-year gap of no training. I was really hoping to see Kenobi outsmart Vader, rather than defeating him head-on. The show itself implied it a couple of times, particularly in the flashback scene.

  • @WKidd1776

    @WKidd1776

    I've got to disagree respectfully- I think Kenobi knew full well that this was not the fight to be playing the underdog in. I think when he took up his famous stance and faced Vader forthrightly, he acknowledged that there was a time to run and a time to fight- and hearing his dialogue in the ship, he knew it was his day to fight. This also, I think, represented his acceptance of the last lesson Anakin would teach Kenobi- they both feared each other for ten years, and he finally let it go and looked his problems in the eye. Vader was too powerful for Kenobi to play his normal underdog game- there's too much at stake and he cannot lose or Luke and Leia are exposed. When he charged into that fight, he no longer feared Vader- he was obviously torn up about Anakin, but Vader held no more power over him than he could take with a lightsaber at that point. I think Kenobi's aggression in this case is righteous anger and resolve to finish this thing between them- he's fighting for Luke and Leia, sure, but he's also fighting to avenge everything Anakin stole from him by slaughtering the Jedi. Once he discovers that Anakin is indeed dead, he leaves. There's nothing else to accomplish, at least nothing that can be done practically. In doing this, he figuratively gets the high ground yet again and also demonstrates to Vader that despite his great and terrible power, he is still at the mercy of his past.

  • @WKidd1776

    @WKidd1776

    Also- I do think apologizing/forgiving Anakin is a way of Kenobi outwitting Vader- it was this forgiveness that allowed him to see Qui-Gon in the end and ultimately learn how to become a force ghost. It was forgiveness that allowed him to become more powerful than Vader could imagine, I think. Pretty smart, if you ask me.
