Why Daniel Craig's Bond Style?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

What is it about Daniel Craig's Bond that lends itself to so many people adopting his Bond's style? Is it because he is the current Bond? Is it because of his portrayal of the character? Is it because this Bond's style is more relatable? We explore these and MANY more questions with my guests, Kyle Barbeau, Bobby Morelli, and John Williams!

Alright, as someone who has been following this sartorial stuff for less than a year I gotta say this. Before I was just a t-shirt and jeans guy with essentially a buzz cut (which looking back was pretty ugly lol). Now everything I wear is DC inspired somehow, mostly from his Bond portrayal. Even the daily military uniforms that I wear are more fitted, being that I wear a size down and work out more. I also grew my hair out and style it now, though it's side parted more like Connery just with a fade. It has been a real culture shock for me because now I get complimented nearly everyday for how good I look or what I'm wearing. Even more so cause I'm a low-key guy who prefers to avoid extra attention. Someone literally yelled from across a parking lot the other day "dude, I love your jacket!" And I don't think I need the share the reactions when I wear my Billy Reid peacoat (yes I splurged a lot this past year). I can't deny that I have a lot more confidence now. I wish I had picked up a lot sooner the importance of how one presents themselves to the world and trying to be the best version of yourself.

Good for you! No questioned about it. A well groomed person = self -respect, confidence and dignity. You don't even have to wear expensive clothes. You just have to make sure that they are pressed, tailored so that they fit (most dry cleaners offer this service) and are clean.

I really like Daniel Craig's interpretation of James Bond, like the literary character. But I think some of Craig's suits look like a tight fit to my eyes. Connery's dress sense was usually great.

I remember an article sometime that argued that Craigs Bond suits were deliberately ill-fitting as a statement/strike by Bond against conformism, a surly statement against the upper echalon whilst trying to find solace in fine brands. Perhaps being a person who dresses as a civilised canine, whilst is infact a wolf hiding within civilised society.

Also Craig's version of James Bond is meant to reflect the sense that he's a superhero, and a skin-tight suit enhancing the V shape of Craig's body surely gives-off that vibe. His appearance is meant to highlight him as a sharp, agile, dangerous killing machine instead of a fit guy in a suit. Craig's Bond rather looks like a jacked-up but lean bodyguard who does cage-fighting in his spare time, rather than a corporate spy. Personally I prefer Brosnan' s style, as his Brioni suits fit much better, while looking comfortable enough to be in, but he fits in a crowd much better than Craig.

Im sure that I'm not the only person who feels this way but I really think that when a panelist references a garment, David or his "editor" should flash an image on screen for the audience. Im sure this will take a little more time in the "editing room" but I know that it will result in a more enjoyable watching experience for the audience.

As someone whose life experiences tends to lean more to the tactical mindset and lifestyle then the fashion aspect (Military and Law Enforcement), being a Bond fan has helped me learn to appreciate taking pride in your personal appearance. The biggest appeal for me, always, has been the fact that at the end of the day Bond is a guy that carries a gun for a living but doesn't scream tactical in his personal appearance. I like to dress around the gun I carry and put on the appearance of someone who probably doesn't. There are a multitude of advantages to this way of thinking as well.

What a great discussion. I agree 100%. We all need clothes that vary at different stages of our lives. Why not take inspiration from the films and that work for us regardless of the label. It’s those invisible moments that speak to us fans.

I think it was a very good comment about how Daniel Craig has set new standards with his look, more casual. I think he sets a standard that you can use for your own, without going cosplay. We all need a style icon to emulate. If left to our own creativity I believe some of us might end up wearing robin egg blue tutus and would not set a new trend, just bad choices. I have kept Cary Grant, Sean Connery, Steve McQueen...even James Coburn as my lense for my look. Daniel, however, has made our choices more real. We can't sashay through every day in our dinner jackets and suits. Great interaction today.

On my Bond Journey I find that I started with Moore as "My" Bond in the Movie theatres...but through VHS Connery/Lazenby really got me hooked because of the cold war 60's coolness...however Casino Royale was a game changer. My Bond obsession began with Daniel Craig...I always owned the various VHS and DVD and Bluray and iTunes collections...but my desire to buy the clothes and watches were because of Craig...also Craig sort of nicks Steve McQueens style so I wear those sweaters and shirts and casual wear.

Great discussion guys. For me, DC's influence comes from 2 things - 1 he instantly modernised Bond by avoiding the well trodden path of a classic, suave, urbane all knowing figure and amping up emotions combined with steely coolness. His natural edgy and intense style fit so well into this that Bond became instantly real again, right for the times, sexy and cool again. That may have alienated some who like a smoother Bond but it made him very relatable or interesting to others. 2 His vintage cool sensibilities coupled with a love of clothes. Unlike TD who asserted that Bond would have little interest in being a clothes horse, DC is keenly aware of the importance of Bond as a stylish hero who takes pleasure in well made and fine clothes.

A good costume designer always services the story first, the character second. The costume designer is a storyteller as much as the director, the scene writer and the actor. The clothing has to tell the story as well.

For me Craig's style is accessible. I do not look like Daniel Craig in the least bit. You are a lot closer than I am David. If I had to say who's physical type I fall into t would be Pierce Brosnan (not that I look like him either, I wish) but I am genetically closer to Pierce than Daniel. Even at my best I can't see myself in a Brioni suit, nor will I find myself anytime soon in Anthony Sinclair or Douglas Hayward, I just don't have that kind of life. Craig's clothes are accessible for someone with my lifestyle. I don't have to change the way I live to wear Craig's style but I would for Brosnan. And make a lot more money!
