When I was young, I preferred to drink Pepsi but as I aged, I ended up preferring Coke. Once I hit 205 lbs, I started to prefer water over both Pepsi & Coke.

There's a further level than that though, they choose Pepsi because it's typically sweeter and therefore the majority prefer it in a blind taste test. In cases where people were given these drinks over a longer term or in larger amounts, they preferred Coke.

He's got it wrong. The Pepsi paradox is all about the phenomenon where consumers prefer the initial taste of Pepsi but over longer periods of time, they prefer the original taste of coke. Coke found this out when they did thousands of blind taste tests and found people preferred the taste of Pepsi. So they changed their recipe to a new coke which tasted much more like Pepsi. In blind taste tests people preferred this new drink the most. But over time, Coke had less returning customers buying the new coke because it was too sweet- it didn't have the same staying power, it was good for a sip but not for the whole bottle/can. So they went back to their original flavour, and called in Coke Classic. The same flavour people didn't like as much as Pepsi, but would keep coming back to buy.

There's another example that highlighted the endowment effect when random individuals were chosen to pick between an organic apple and an artifical appel. The two apples were then labeled in similar fashion with the organic slightly higher in price. People choose the organic notably more than the artifical, even when told that the two apples were identical in looks, nutrition and processing; people still favored the one that had the label of "organic"

The study didn’t take into account that people like trying new flavors. So when they tasted something they don’t usually drink, there was more neural activity in the brain do the “write that down, WRITE THAT DOWN” thing from spongebob. So it was more of an experience. A better study would involve having the participants trying this experiment many times and taking an average.

Fun fact: My dad once participated in a school survey involving hundreds of students(nearly the entire school). The proctors gave 7 different samples of soda and gave each student a blind taste test. They were to identify what the drink was and whether it was diet or regular. Out of the entire school, my dad was the only one to guess every one correctly. He did this based on taste alone. Needless to say, they were pissed. Edit: They were pissed because, at the time, they were trying to convince everyone that diet and regular sodas tasted the same. When even one person can tell, it messes with their whole plan. Imagine you devise this whole schem and a high school kid easily tells you the difference.

I picked Coke correctly (and won a six pack of Coke) and did again a couple of years ago when my neighbor and I were talking about it. I don't like Pepsi, it tastes very different to me.

In economics this is called product differentiation. As a company, you never want your product to be a perfect substitute of your competitors' products, cause that forces you to constantly push your prices below theirs otherwise they get all the market share. If, however, your products are non-perfect substitutes, you may be able to get away with slightly higher prices than your opponents' due to consumers having some sort of preference for your product. Commodities are perfect substitutes, sodas and colas are not.

(Both Diet Coke and Coke Zero taste flatter and have way too much carbonation compared to pepsi which has a rich taste and it tastes far less carbonated than Coke and especially Diet and Zero.)

Another thing about this study, they were given a very small amount of the drink. Pepsi is sweeter than Coke, and when consumed in tiny amounts, the sweeter drink is usually preferred. However, when you have to drink an entire can? It’s usually going to lose.

The only time I prefer coke over pepsi is when the coke is in a glass bottle

Also, there is a lot more other factors, like for example, if you come to a person that just had something salty, or is thirsty and you give him the pepsi first and cola second, they will say that the pepsi tasted better. This is for two main reasons, first, is that the pepsi will feel better, because the person gets more dopamine pumped into his brain, cause he got what he wanted and needed, after a salty meal, in the case of cola, as the second given drink, this effect won't apply anymore. Another factor could be something, we all know, and that's the fact that sweet things taste sweeter after eating something for example bitter, or salty, and that's because our brain senses a bigger contrast between those two meals. This also applies for the drink given first, and not for the one given as second. And so, people's decision may rely even on the order you give them the drinks. Hopefully you'll know what I mean.

this is a given in any social study, which is why these studies "control" for these factors by giving 50% of the participants Pepsi first and 50% Coke first, and they choose who gets what first randomly so there's no chance for bias.

I don't like either of them. Doesn't matter what label you put on it I can always taste the difffearence between those two and if I have to choose i like coca cola more but in general neither are preferenced

The difference between coke and Pepsi is like day and night to me Pepsi has a bit of a chemically flavour to it and it immediately makes my stomach upset when I drink it and coke tastes like coke it's the drink I always go back to even if its not the absolute best drink in the world I don't get sick of it easily or at all actually

Did this at school in grade 8. 19/23 people chose Pepsi. 3 people chose Coca Cola and 1 person chose Presidents choice as their prefered taste. Needless to say, I was chocked.

The more I see things like this the more I'm convinced I'm one of the only ones who can actually taste the difference. Never have I ever gotten a blind taste test wrong because they're simply different sodas. This is like asking me to taste the difference between sprite and seltzer water

When the Pepsi challenge was going on everywhere I made it a point to do it as many times as I could and would just say which one was which until they asked me over and over what I liked better I said coke. And I learned that they wouldn't let you keep doing it when you coke but if you said pepsi and acted surprised and said your a coke person you would be allowed to try it a few times. I figured it was because they wanted to get high numbers of people who said they like coke but when tested they would choose Pepsi. The same way ALL KINDS of "studys" are done they are basically told they would get paid to prove right whatever the company paying wanted to be proven as correct. Its in all companies. Pharmaceutical companies in one example for valium in the USA placebo did as well or better for anxiety so they went to France and then found the results they were looking for to get the drug approved. Its why whenever someone says a study proves them right I call BS. just like how vaccines that are less then a year old are proven "safe" in the long term. BS Long term is a study at 5 years and 10 years.

Everyone talking about Pepsi and coke favouritism and the company’s ad marketing skills. But this is a psychology observation. We tend to pick things that might not be good for us as individuals because it’s the most “popular” thing to choose, yet if we dismiss the favouritism factor of liking what everyone else likes because it’s a brand/visual thing we’re taught to enjoy more, then we just pick what is better for us with no social expectations of choosing the “favourite”. This stands for a lot of things in life, job choice, partner choice, food choice, vacation choice.

The thing is in the uk there is much more people who drink Pepsi because of the many fried chicken restaurants. All though many people prefer Pepsi max - the english version of Pepsi no sugar or zero or something like that. Many shops don’t even sell Pepsi instead they sell Pepsi max and Pepsi max is my favourite fizzy drink

My food science teacher did a blind taste test and coke overwhelmingly was the most like with Pepsi being second. Everyone said that the first one(Pepsi) tasted flat when the bottles were purchased that morning and were opened just before class started.

My dad said he was in one of those "do you prefer Pepsi or Coke" types of studies where they'll pour Pepsi and Coke into paper cups and put it on the table for the taste test. My dad said they cheated and had one of the colas served cold and the other served at room temperature. Of course the cold one would taste better so naturally most of the participants would choose it, rather than based on taste alone

They were probably testing for variables in the group your dad was one. In a study they test for several things not just one. They might want to know If Coke would win out if Pepsi was warmer. If the shape of the glass mattered. If you would choose theirs depending on how attractive the person serving it was etc. They test for numerous stupid things.

How do people not recognize the two by taste they're both drastically different products.

I personally prefer coke and always have. To me there’s a big difference in taste between Pepsi and Coke. I like Pepsi too but for different reasons. I tend to find that Pepsi is a lighter soda and less syrupy than Coke and sometimes I want something lighter but Pepsi is distinctly sweeter as well. I’m personally a person who doesn’t care about the label at all and pick Coke over Pepsi when given the option about 95% of the time.

They had one of these blind Pepsi vs Coke challenges at my local carnival when I was younger. I knew exactly which one was which and chose coke, because I simply like the taste way more. I asked the person who was running it (it wasn’t a Pepsi rep or anything, I think they were just doing it for fun) and he said most people did choose Coke that day lol

Coca-Cola has a much stronger kick to it than Pepsi. Pepsi has a more smooth, sugary taste and it’s much easier to drink. I love that strong kick that Coke has, so Coke wins for me.

I prefer Pepsi but Rc is actually the best even though it's less well know it depends on the person coke is in my opinion only more popular due to there being many versions of it that are cheaper then most other sodas.

During the blind taste test people don't "overwhelmingly" choose Pepsi. It was only around 62%. Also consumers generally choose the sweeter product on a single sip tasting. But when drinking an entire serving choose less sweet variety.

The results of this experiment had a lot to do with initial sweetness. Pepsi was a lot sweeter on the first sip so people preferred it. But when given a full cup they preferred the flavor of coke more

This is what i try to explain to people when i tell them they dont really prefer coke they just prefer the label

I always drink pepsi if I can, because it actually tastes better than coke

Its also because the blind experiment was skewed since it was only based on a sip. Pepsi is sweeter than coke which means it will perform better in sip tests. Im curious if they redid this study with an entire can/bottle consumed if the results would be the same. I believe one of cokes drinks that was removed from market actually performed better in blind tests, this was replaced when they brought back classic coke.

It’s really easy: I drink Pepsi when I need something cold to drink during a hot, sunny day and I drink Coca Cola when I’m having lunch or dinner. Pepsi is like water, or juice, or even energy drink (you can drink it without eating something) while Coke is more like milk, tea or even coffee. (Always better with food, cookie, cakes etc)

I actually prefer Pepsi, even though it taste almost the same, the Pepsi logo looks much clean and fresher

There are two other factors that might screw it up, and that’s memories and rarity. For example (and I’m using energy drinks because close enough): when I was a kid and I first got into drinking energy drinks I didn’t know which ones tasted good. One of the first ones I came across was an energy drink called full throttle but I grabbed an orange flavor without paying attention and I HATE the flavor of oranges. This was not the energy drink or it’s Brands fault but mine, yet because my first memory was of such an awful flavor I subconsciously avoid that Brand because of the bad memory. On the other hand Venom energy drink was one Brand that is quite difficult to find in stores in the region I live in. It is considered rarer to me since you have to actually go looking for it so when I see it I am more tempted to purchase that drink. It also has the fun little side note of because I get excited when I see this energy drink my partner was then effected by it as well, since seeing that Brand triggers a memory of my being excited to see the drink and now THEY will buy the drink when they see it. This also effected my Mother who remembered my love of the drink and now thinks of me when she sees that Brand and always buys a few in case I happen to come by, even though we live a full days travel away and I’d obviously have to plan out a visit and can’t just randomly drop in. She’d know I was coming, but gets them anyway to make it feel like I’m just down the road and not so far away. Not trying to disprove or undermine the study which I totally believe since I see it everyday, but I thought these variables would be an interesting thing to consider if you happen to like the concept of this study

Tldr Some other factors affecting it are memory and rarity of the product Also if you realte the product to something nice [ex- there is a drink your SO likes, and so you'll start buying it when you see it cause you see them happy]

I choose product every time. "Name Brand" or the Highest price doesn't mean nothing to me if the off brand is better. And in my opinion, off brands normally do end up tasting or performing better in my experience.

Pepsi got a whole ass paradox going on

You can't take pepsi and coke as an example. The reason why people would choose pepsi it's because of its sweeter flavor, but it is too sweet so you don't drink it all. That's why people prefer coke, you can drink it all without any problem. The pepsi paradox was a test realized to proof that pepsi was better than coke, and many people believed it was indeed just because they got little sips to try it, and of course they chose sweeter over coke.

Only reason I drink coke is because when I'm high I like the way it tastes and I like the way it feels when drinking it.

Pepsi is better for the first sip but if Im drinking the whole thing then Coke is way better. It just has a better overall after taste. Definitely a difference in product

I have always been one of those outliers who can tell in blind tests. I always preferred coke over pepsi because pepsi is too sweet for me. And dr. pepper over coke, because again, it’s less sweet. I also wound up getting those blind taste test survey’s that came to schools back when I was a kid due to the setup being that if you get everything correct, you get paid, and I always got everything correct and it became an issue because I even got water taste tests correct and I was the only one consistently getting things right and I never considered the option of lying to keep the peace because of my ASD so that went over like a ton of bricks. Anyways, I left that school a year or so later due to further hijinks and graduated at the school I went to after that.

Then again I’ve developed a hyper sensetivity to taste and can’t drink either anymore without vomiting. Could as a child and teen, though.

Ngl, I think I prefer Pepsi. Growing up, I'd visit my grandparents in a different state every other summer, they drank Pepsi, so I associate it with a nostalgia thing. I still prefer Pepsi over coke, especially when it comes to non diet. Coke legitimately leaves what I can only describe as a "coke coating" and it makes my teeth feel sticky or something

I mean it is flawed becuz these two brands are so popular that the blindfolded camdidate would also have known what drinks they are.Even if that was true there is no reason for someone to choose a more popular drink out of the other despite the other tasting good.

I’ve always liked Pepsi more than coke, probably because I didn’t care about brand at all when I first had them

As a kid, I used to think if they're the same color, they taste the same. But when I went to a party, I got bored and tried coke and pepsi side by side and realized a slight difference in taste. Pepsi is owned by Pepsico which also owns Lays and Tostitos and Tropicana and Quaker and Gatorade and Ruffles and many many more companies. Like 90% of the snack isle at any grocery store is owned by PepsiCo. So, from an “anti-monopoly” perspective, I support Coke more. I’m also biased because I like the taste of Coke more. If a restaurant has Pepsi products though, I’ll enjoy a Mountain Dew lol

Product. Brand definitely helps to sell, but if the brand doesn't live up to the product, well then chances are that you won't be interested in buying it again. I love Pepsi both because of the taste, but also because of the blue brand. Blue being one of if not my favourite colour, it automatically makes me think that the product is going to be worthwhile using. But it isn't always the brand that comes to play as I mentioned before. If a certain product happens to take you back to your childhood days, then that too can have quite the (hopefully positive) effect on one.

Like 5 years ago when my mother moved into a new home we had a welcome party. We bought plenty of different sodas (coca, pepsi, lidl coca colas, and others) and my cousins who have always only drank coca cola tasted all of them and unanimously agreed that lidl had the better cola. Since then one of my cousins admitted that he did like lidl best but still drinks coca cola and the other cousin still says we lied and she really said coca cola( no she didn't)

What i find really weird about Coca Cola is that of all soft drinks it seems to be the only one that really makes me want to buy a 2nd bottle. It's like they add something extra to it that makes it more addictive

I can’t believe that. Pepsi tastes flat and has no kick to it. Coke tastes so much better, it has better flavor and has more kick to it. You know when you are drinking a Coke. Pepsi tastes like all the other average sodas on the market.

Honestly I'd notice the difference between the both. I don't ever drink any other coke over the classic coca cola. Anything else is vile.

I always thought it was just because in a blind tasting, Pepsi stands out because it is sweeter and you only take one sip in those tests. But most people drink a glass or a bottle and coke is better when you are drinking more than one sip.

I like Pepsi more cause it has a nostalgic taste that I can’t get over, even with the labels I prefer Pepsi.
