Why Community’s Pilot Was Streets Ahead
Ойын-сауық
In light of the recent movie news, I thought it high time to return to Greendale. Today, we're talking about Community's pilot - why it's streets ahead, why I disagree with some common perceptions around it, how it responds to John Hughes' classic film The Breakfast Club, and how it displays some essential qualities of Dan Harmon's which we'd go on to see throughout the rest of the show's run. If you want to see more videos like this, on the rest of the show, make sure to like the video and share it round in any social / online spaces you might be in which contain other Community lovers!

In season one, episode one - Community - a lawyer, whose law degree has been revoked, is compelled to join the Greendale Community College. Students of diverse temperaments - Britta, Abed, Troy, Shirley, Pierce, and Annie - join his study group which leads to quirky and memorable encounters. Community is an American television sitcom created by Dan Harmon. The series ran for 110 episodes over six seasons, with its first five seasons airing on NBC from September 17, 2009, to April 17, 2014, and its final season airing on Yahoo! Screen from March 17 to June 2, 2015. Set at a community college in the fictional Colorado town of Greendale, the series stars an ensemble cast including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, Chevy Chase, and Jim Rash. It makes use of meta-humor and pop culture references, paying homage to film and television clichés and tropes.

My favourite thing about the Community pilot: These two lines, from the beginning of the episode and the end. "I see your value now." "That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me." Jeff and Abed, Abed and Jeff. From a bald statement of opportunism and a missed meaning, to a bold declaration of truth and a realized one.
It always saddens me when people say the pilot is one of the least interesting episodes. The greatest thing about Community isn't the high concept stuff, season 4 is a testament to that. It's the sharp dialog, the witty jokes, the writing is so clever that even bottle episodes and clip shows are still incredibly entertaining. The pilot has all the things that makes Community great without the high concept stories and meta humor.

I love the non high stakes or high energy episodes but pilots are just always awkward and feel like the first day where everyone is just introducing themselves.

100% agree Postmodernism isn't the point of the show. It's the unavoidable lens of the show.

@@granttar1981 But are pilots ALWAYS awkward? If you were to jump in at a random point in any show, the confusion would be tenfold. Sure, part of it is the writers figuring stuff out. But part of it is also the viewers needing to take time to understand these characters and this world. I mean, how many pilots hold up after rewatches? More often than not, having seen the rest of the show will give you appreciation for the pilot.

I remember that I was already hooked from the 1st episode… and I don’t know how often I rewatched the episode with the chicken wing mafia. Years later when I watched the first episode of Rick and Morty I wondered if the producers made anything else before the show… and it made total sense that Dan Harmon also created community. The absurdity of Rick and Morty reminded me a lot of Community.

I am literally the absolute perfect person to watch this video because the pilot of Community is the one and only epsiode of the show I've seen so far just 2 weeks ago.
The Community pilot was love at first sight, both with the show and its characters. This rarely happens for me. (One other example being Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.)
Name Idea: Pillars of Community. Simple and to the point.
Ok HOW are you doing this? First an Archer video IMMEDIATELY after I finished catching up on the latest season! Now a Community video as soon as I start the show?!

See I would agree but omg the Brooklyn 99 pilot just takes it for me- although the community pilot I would say is one I have watched a lot and is one of my favourite episodes in the entire show (with Remedial chaos theory and conspiracy 101 being the other 2)
This show reminds me so much how how much more I would enjoy it if I had seen most 80s movies

Therin lies the problem with reference humor.
The Pilot of Community was from what i recall when I viewed it at the time, a solid though modest presentation. What I think worked about Commmunity in terms of its Pilot was it took a gimmick plot point character motivation ( Jeff going to Community College to try to get a degree because he faked having a law degree as a lawyer) and just using it a minor trampoline to propel the character and the rest of the story forward.
I actually saw Community as influenced by My Dinner With Andre ( which is featured in a memorable episode of the show) though I agree with you on The Breakfast Club serving as a model for the show primarily the structure of the characters within a study group in a library.
"Pillar of Garbage's Full-Abed Unnecessarily-Meta Community Retrospective Part 1: Kick-Puncher's Revenge"
I almost mistook this for the experience of drinking a lemon Shandy in July upon my initial viewing on account of both of them being brilliant in their fundamental concept, were expertly realised by a skilled crafter, and whose crisp contents left me feeling thoroughly refreshed. Streets ahead, indeed, Ser. World premiere. 10 out of 10. Needless to say, subbed.
just discovered your channel by searching for the song, didn't expect to find such carefully constructed deep-dives into this show and others (additionally to the few social commentaries you made) guess I'm gonna be excited for the rest of the video series before the movie arrives
i love the community videos. such a good and interesting show with so much to see and pick up on. i’d love to see one on remedial chaos theory, as it’s my personal favorite and such and interesting one
Please keep these coming! Absolutely loved the first two videos you've done on S1 and S2 of Community!
I would love to see this video series. Some of your best videos are about community, and i would love this
Look, it's not the wittiest title, but the first thing that sprang to mind for a name for the series of retrospectives was "Community 101" since it gives an introduction to each season. I can't say what it was like to watch the pilot because the first episode I saw was the original paintball episode, and I was immediately hooked. There's also a special place in my heart for Abed/troy's secret Christmas song and the entirety of Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas, my absolute favorite episode of the series
All 6 Dances!!! (Series title suggestions). Great video. Love this show!!!!
I knew I knew the phrase Pilar of Garbage! Natalie is Freezing 🥶
The way everyone was so aware of pop culture made me think. This took place in California till Jeff said he had never left Colorado. In like season 5
I found it amusing how they turned a relatively straightforward premise about a lawyer into a surrealist masterpiece over the course of about a season.
Great video humanbeing ❤
man you're good at making videos!
underrated channel this content is gorgeous
I’m assuming you’re going to make a video on the movie once it comes out, so why not call this series “Six Pilots and a Movie”
Pillar AND midnight? Now that a collab that would blow my mind
I remember seeing a few clips of the show, but I never really knew what it was about. I didn't even know Jeff was the "main" friend until I saw the pilot. I remember thinking he was just an older member of the group, and that it was more of an ensemble. So I was a little surprised to learn what the actual plot was at long last, when I first took the plunge. No regrets.
Can't wait for the next community video.... But I will
I really enjoyed watching this in High School
Marked out for “this is the first in a series” 🎉🎉
Yeah I gotta say after hearing a lot of commentary I was surprised how good the first episode was last time I re-watched.
Great video, little correction: It was a biology-class where Harmon had the Community-inspiring experience.

its very clear why u dont know why breakfast club hits home with a huge generation of people in america, because that kind of thing actually happened. your school system must have handled things much differently in middle and highschool levels. we had friday night school, and saturday morning detention. and it was a group of kids very similar.
Community is just brilliant.
In the context of the group being breakfast club, wouldn't Jeff also be John or whatever his name is for pushing the dynamic, being the asshole and messing with everyone while appealing to their deeper persons?
How can you defend this episode when Jeff wears *those* trousers...

@@PillarofGarbage My normal brain tells me that these Community related videos aren't really pushed because they are relatively short compared to the average video essay these days. My sneaky evil brain watch your numbers and isn't satisfied with such a simple idea. With the random treatment Community received over a blackface joke, I wouldn't put it past YT to have some kind of system in place to control how much certain IPs get pushed lol
I'm having trouble introducing the show to people because they seem to be turned off from the first episode. I'm not sure if it's the underdeveloped characters, the focus on Jeff, or the more laid-back humor that it has compared to the rest of the show. It just seems to be a hard sell for some reason with the people I know.
Honestly the first, say, ten, fifteen minutes put me off, because I thought the show would be one of those where the lead was a terrible person and you were supposed to laugh at the consequences of their arrogance.
Everyone is lacking eyebrows
Good old times when John Oliver was still funny.
The movie will never live up to the original series
Jeff is a great character... before you realize it's just Dan Harmon's false and egotistical self-image. Yeah, sure, you're good looking and a natural leader and charismatic and capable of sweet talking anyone or anything. Zero self-reflection on himself and his prejudices that can be confirmed at the later sexual harrassment allegation or the writing in season 2 and beyond.
