Why Clip Studio Paint is great for making comics

Ойын-сауық

I've been an artist and illustrator for now distressingly close to two decades and I've tried every single art application out there. None of them have ever scratched my itches quite as nicely as Clip Studio Paint (formerly Manga Studio).
This video is neither sponsored nor an ad (though I'd be happy to take that payday!) but I'm honestly very happy with how this program works and what it can do and I want more people to know about it.
Any questions, remarks or things you wanna know about making comics with this program? Leave them in the comments! :)

Nice, love the video clipstudio deserves more love, been using it for a while now, and love it, one point you did not touch but may be very important for many, is the price of the program, is quite afordable, and the more expensive version can handle a comic multiple pages in a single project file.

Got this program a few years ago and I have to say, that money was well spent. It's so useful! I love the 3d models, yes they seem a bit stiff most of the time, but for getting a better idea for a specific pose, i think they're awesome. I agree a bit on the "cheating" part, but then again I think of the original concept of this for drawing manga and I remember how mangaka often use screen tones for background stuff, too, so...i guess it's okay.

Maybe someday, I'll go back to using Clip Studio Paint to do manga. But for now, I'll just stick to Medibang Paint. And yes. CSP has really hood tools. And also... Did you know that Manga Studio is called Comic Studio in Japan? I guess it'll make it sound boring to the Japanese if they just call it Manga Studio. So they use the word "Comic" instead. But outside Japan, of course, it's called Manga Studio. Maybe cos the word "Manga" is associated with "Comics from Japan" outside Japan.

That's an over simplification. Comic Studio was the name in Japan originally. When e frontier brought it stateside, e frontier called it Manga Studio because it thought it'd sell better here with that name. They eventually learned that calling it that also came with a stigma we didn't want. Then Smith Micro bought e frontier america and Cel*sys wanted to drop Manga Studio/Comic Studio entirely during that time and create a new program called Clip Studio. We pushed back against the idea and asked that they include some of illustudio's features in Manga Studio for Manga Studio 4. Then Clip Studio released in Japan and the only way to maintain our publishing deal with them was to carry that product as they pulled an end of life on the Illustudio/Comic Studio line - which meant no more Manga Studio. So we brought over Clip Studio as Manga Studio 5. The interface being completely different and features in Comic Studio not appearing in Clip Studio threw a lot of people for a loop. To make things worse, we then agreed to adopt the name Clip Studio to maintain parity with the Japanese release (and not piss off Cel*sys but that happened anyway). So there you have it. The reason behind the name change. I'm glad I'm not involved with all that anymore honestly.

Great vid! I love this program but I hadn't dived into a lot of the features you mentioned in here. I had no idea about the rulers and I had barely played around with the panels. I really love the 3D models for getting angles and poses right. I definitely agree that sometimes the features get to the point where it feels a bit like "cheating" though. Like there are some really nice lace patterns, flowers, other stuff like that...maybe if I needed to bang out a background or a background character you could use them sparingly but definitely not something I'd want to be the main focus of the picture. I think Clip Studio also had pretty good picture to screentone tools; definitely something you could use with either your own or free for commercial use photos if you just really didn't want to draw a particular background!

Yeah, it's a thing of... I've seen some artists who just basically grab a bunch of brushes and assets and clipart and copy paste things into their work and it looks a bit of an incoherent mess. And that sucks. But I see a lot MORE artists who use brushes and stock assets as bases to do interesting work on top of, which I think is the correct way to do it. Also yes the rulers are freaking awesome.

You can change the number of points on the mesh to a higher number, but the default 4x4 works well. Use the points to move the text how you want it (wave shape, blown out, etc... What I initially liked in CSP is that the drawing tools are quite intuitive and they work very well out-of-the-box. With Photoshop, I had to keep tweaking the tools to get a natural feeling to them, and I still wasn't quite happy with many of them. Also, the reference layer is a great feature that avoid color bleeding and make coloring a picture much more easy. As far as I know, Photoshop doesn't have that.

Is there a "fish eye" perspective feature? I saw you added several vanishing points in the "perspective ruler" section, but it seemed to me like "two (or three) point perspective with multiple vanishing points" Fish eye perspective is more of a 5 or 6 point perspective, which causes that curve. I'm curious if it has one. That would be cool!

Aren't you getting all the facts switched the other way around? In Japan, it's already called Clip Studio Paint (CSP) from its creation. In the west, there are already software called Manga Studios and they are completely different softwares (and they are baaaaad). But starting from Manga Studio 5, they are using CSP. So in short, Manga Studio 5 is the western localization of CSP... And to add more confusion, there are also English versions of CSP, which you can buy directly from CSP website. Microsmith is the company that released Manga Studio... So they are the one who brought CSP to US (and renamed it to Manga Studio, making unnecessary confusion). The one who create Clip Studio Paint is Celsys.

How is the animation software? I’ve heard it’s gotten better. I’m thinking about going with Exe for anime style animation. I get the idea that opentoonz, toonboom, and others like it aren’t really suited to an eastern style of animation.

With curvilinear perspective, you need curved rulers. It looks like you'd have to custom build them in this program. but it looks doable.
