Why Clint Eastwood Didn’t Want to Do the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Ойын-сауық
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is considered by many as the greatest western movie of all time, even though Once Upon a Time in the West also has a claim to that title, particularly amongst critics. Both movies were directed by legendary filmmaker Sergio Leone who no doubt must have enjoyed seeing critics argue over which of his two films are the best western of all time.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly starred Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, and Elli Wallach as three men in the American Civil War era who compete to locate Confederate gold that has been buried at a secret grave in a cemetery. But what many people may not be aware of, is how close the film came to not even starring Clint Eastwood. By the mid-1960s, Clint Eastwood’s career was already packed with westerns. Understandably, the Hollywood star was looking to do something new and refreshing. This is likely one of the reasons that when asked to appear in The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, he originally declined. But his issues with the project didn’t stop there.
When Eastwood initially agreed to star in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, the third film in what is now known as The Dollars Trilogy, he was disappointed after reading the script and discovering that he’d be sharing the screen with two other major players. The issue was a big deal for Eastwood, big enough in fact, that negotiations for the third film fell apart, and Eastwood’s agents and publicists had to work incredibly hard to bring him back to the production. Join us as we take a deeper look at why Clint Eastwood didn’t want to be a part of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and other interesting behind-the-scenes facts about the classic western.

I can't imagine The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly without the three lead actors, Eastwood, Wallach, and Van Cleef. The casting choices were perfect for this movie.

Eli Wallach played the same type of role in The Magnificent Seven , another western classic.
I visited Sad Hill on a camper tour of Northern Spain last week. What an atmospheric place, and good work by the fans for restoring the area. To stand in the exact spot these three great actors once stood 56 years ago is an awesome experience.
It's not the greatest western of all time, it's the greatest film of all time.

I think those big name actors enhanced the movie instead of diminishing Eastwood. Eastwood is Eastwood no matter the movie. When Angel Eyes tossed the shovel (at the grave) I thought it went dangerously close to Tuco. Once Upon a Time with Bronson was a well made decision. Nice for Leone that both movies are both rated as the best ever made in the same genre. That's a difficult accomplishment. Has anyone else ever done that?

Charles Bronson turned down Eastwood’s part in A Fist Full Of Dollars, so as it turns out Bronson could have starred in all 4 films as well. Reportedly Bronson also turned down the role of Angel Eyes for this film. Lee Van Cleef played the role far better than Bronson could have.

Near the end, the shovel tossed by Blondie misses Tuco's hands by an inch, and then the bigger shovel tossed by Angel Eyes misses Tuco's forehead by an inch.

He's almost in every scene. in rifle store.. cave where his friends hiding.. torture by angel eyes... meeting his brother and bill clason. Maybe this got Clint Eastwood disappointed. The safety protocol on these films was indeed horrendous. In The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, when the bridge was blown the second time, id you look, you'll see a car battery sized chunk of rock narrowly miss Eastwood by about a foot. The lack of any real safety measures was part of why Eastwood refused to work with Leone after this film. I'm sure he would have been great in Once Upon, but I think Bronson was perfect and, in my opinion, his finest role. Those four films are absolutely my all-time favorite Westerns. Nothing else compares.

Tuco absolutely fabulous
Good stuff. but unless he was cut out of the movie, Eli Wallach wasn't in For a few Dollars More.
This is typical of a major star on the ascent . Eastwood should have shown better appreciation for what the first two "dollars" westerns did for his Rowdy Yates career on "Rawhide". Not only that, without that character, Eastwood might not have survived. Fortunately, he injected the bounty Hunter's persona in all his subsequent films. Be it Coigan, Dirty Harry or Josey Wales. What I am saying is that even though I consider "The Good. Bad and Ugly" the best western in the world, Eastwood should have shown more class and appreciation to Leone . Okay, so he got an automobile thrown into the kitty. At the same time Leone had to scimp and re-use a prop wanted poster from "Dollars More". Nah, Eastwood let me down . As much as I admire his directorial skills, he let me down. So he felt threatened with Walkach and Van Cleef on board. Those are insecurities in the highest order.
Obviously safety was a after thought in the 60s! 😬🤭😂

To understand Sergio Leone's trilogy is to go a bit deeper than a good shoot 'em up western. I like those as well but Sergio Leone uses his camera as a painter uses his canvas. If you choose, you have the ability to turn the sound off and watch the trilogy as silent films! The story is all there without dialogue! When this trilogy was first seen by millions of Americans it was shown on television sets that cut both sides of the film off and it never had it's full cinematic glory shown. I would advise everyone that sees these films on their full widescreen versions to approach them with an artistic sense. As an artist they had profound meaning to me!

I saw these movies in the theater, in my small town, when they first came out. Westerns are an American genre of movies that can be more than just, shoot 'em up cowboy. Unforgiven is certainly as artistically deep as Leone's spaghetti westerns. These movies came off as a spoof on westerns, much like the comedy westerns made here in the States. I never really cared for any of these including Leone's, How the West was Won. Terrence Hill made a couple of interesting ones in the 70's and I liked Mel Brook's, Blazing Saddles. Art, as you know, is subjective and it's great that you found inspiration in Leone's work as did others.
Truly great actors will act that way, it's what makes them what and who they are. Pride comes before the fall so anyone who is prideful has nothing more than this to look forward to. That is to say that they should expect nothing less than eternity in hell to look forward to for their arrogance. I feel like Clint had truly felt that it was time to stretch his acting legs so to speak as he started out on Television as a character in a western T.V series and had done multiple Western movies by the time he was offered the role of, "Blondie", in The Good The Bad and The Ugly. Good actors want to perform but the truly great want to explore different genres and acting opportunities and they do not get type casted by one character creations. Clint proved that he was multi talented in the different roles which he performed throughout his career.
If Eastwoof got $250,000 plus %10 of theater revenue and a brand new Ferrari, whatdid lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach get?
whats funny is, he hated the multi take style of sergio that he ended up doing the exact opposite when he became a director. apparently he tries to do as few takes as possible to not waste peoples time.
The way your sentence is worded, it sounds like you're saying that both Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef were in "For a Few Dollars More." Eli Wallach was NOT in "For a Few Dollars More."
@hohinpong2691

Yes! in FAFDM Indio is played by Gian Maria Volonte', By that time it's not surprise that Leone want all his three major cast in GBU are all more well known international star especially Eli Wallach had his role in The Magnificent Seven. Besides, from this consideration, Leone & the production companies wanted to secure the international box office for this huge production. It just matched with what Clint Eastwood said in an interview that Leone wanted to be another David Lean.
In the gun shop, Tuco disassembles 3 different brands of revolvers, then creates a hybrid revolver of the ensemble parts. One, that is not possible. Two, Eli Wallach didn't know anything about guns and his expert gun inspection manipulations were entirely ad libbed.
I believe the "remark" about sharing screen time with two other major players was really a joke remark, a snide remark. ALL established film stars share time with other actors of note, and always will, and Clint Eastwood was smart enough to know that. You didn't see John Wayne or Tom Hanks in films with everyone else being an unknown....
CLINT EASTWOOD was not a part of but MADE the CLASSIC WESTERN WHAT IT IS TODAY

Eli Wallach was not in a Few Dollars more
Without "TUCO" this film would not have been half as great, I can't imagine anyone other than Eli Wallach in his role playing it. Eastwood was very good, but not outstanding, just as nobody could have been Dirty Harry other than Clint Eastwood.
He should have been more grateful,250 grand 10 % of gross and a Ferrari are pretty good for 1965.

Clint did several westerns after the trilogy including Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter and Hang em High. And Josey Wales. And he even brought the man with no name back in his directorial and starring role in The Unforgiven. This little post here is kind of misleading. While Clint might have bargained for more pay, he was a well known star since the Dollar films were already popular in theaters . And Lee Can Cleef was looked upon as a character actor until A Few Dollars More. He probably received less than Clint or Eli if the truth was known. And Clint used the cigars in the Dollar films. It's hard to believe that he would throw a tantrum in this movie.
I agree with clint , it was to long script could if been better , for a few dollars more was ten times better
Well now he's all three
Even though Wallach and Van Cleef especially Wallach as Tuco had a huge role and was arguably the main focus of the film Eastwood was still the star and lead actor of the movie and his character was the one who showed real humanity during the course of the story. Not Tuco even though you like and empathize somewhat with him and definitely not Angel Eyes who was pure evil. Each character's role was equally important to the progression of the movie.
Clint defiantly does not want to do a remake of "Rawhide," so don't ask!!! His bio claimed he did not care for the show!!!

There is no way on earth that once upon a time in the west even comes close to the good the bad and the ugly. No way. A fist full of dollars and for a few dollars more are way better than once a time. Even Josey wales and two mules for sister Sarah are a far better watch.
Eastwood is a little unthankful diva. Without Sergio Leone he wouldn't have made it past television series. Much less would this Mayflower descendant be seen as cool or tough. Leone created the myth and Eastwood just kept on milking it.
Eastwood 👎🏽 Wallach 👍🏽 Bronson 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 Fonda 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 LEONE 👑👑👑📣 MORRICONE 👑👑👑🎵
Eastwood became what he became precisely because he was the star of the trilogy, which brought him success and money. So it seems to me unlikely what you say about Clint's skepticism about accepting the starring role in what will later be the best film in the trilogy. I don't think he would have allowed himself to do that. His are just fabrications, pure American chauvinism. The reality is that Clint owes everything to Leone, without whom he would have remained the mediocre actor he was before he met the Italian director.
He should have been greatful instead of bargaining for more money
